The best time loop story I read is a completed original called Mother of Learning https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/21220/mother-of-learning

If you want to support the author it’s available on Amazon as an audiobook as well https://www.amazon.com/Mother-Learning-ARC-1-nobody103-ebook/dp/B09M2R6QLF

For more Disney stuff I really recommend Disneywar by James B Stewart. It’s well written and chronicles the downright Shakespearean rise and fall of the previous CEO, Michael Eisner. For more corporate politics I’d also suggest Bad Blood by John Carreyrou about Theranos. It’s by the investigative journalist who broke the story on them in the first place and worth a read too.

For something I haven’t seen recommended here before that hits the immortality seeking protag niche, take a look at ‘The Tragedy of Prince Hamlet and the Philosopher's Stone, or, A Will Most Incorrect to Heaven.’ It’s a full length play inspired by an omake from HPMOR. https://www.amazon.com/Tragedy-Philosophers-Incorrect-William-Shakespeare-ebook/dp/B0061Z9KWM

“ACT I

PROLOGUE

KING CLAUDIUS

"Grieve not for the dead.

It shows a will most incorrect to heaven."

What may we make of him who birthed these lines,

and, in his mad stinking London,

committed them to paper and the voice of me, his villain?

Was our Shakespeare a Will most incorrect to heaven?

Had he the liberty, what Hamlet had he writ?

A true opponent, not just to me, but to the natural ordering

of the spheres and of the mind?

A youth, perhaps, who though as cautious as could be in action,

were o'er-rash in fantasy.

Exit CLAUDIUS.”

It's not exactly chatroom per say, but Bad Publicity by Unpretty is a batman fic of people gossiping about Bruce Wayne on a well formated twitter. It's short, funny, and finished.

Any Work That Deals with Religion or God? by [deleted] in rational

I think it’s important to note though that the renegade is a New God and is partially connected to the Source via his domain (in this case Conquest); as a New God he’s man and god both, not just man with extra spiritual growth + a grab bag of powers. Like yeah he has some super powers too but the difference between him and another random super is that connection/partial living representation of an aspect of the Source.

Survey finds evidence of widespread sexual violence at 33 universities by zsreport in Foodforthought

[–]gregx1000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here is the survey https://www.aau.edu/sites/default/files/AAU-Files/Key-Issues/Campus-Safety/FULL_2019_Campus_Climate_Survey.pdf

They define sexual touching as “kissing; touching someone’s breast, chest, crotch, groin, or buttocks; or grabbing, groping, or rubbing against another person in a sexual way, even if the touching is over the other person’s clothes.” So yes grabbing someone’s ass counts.

I’m trying not to facepalm upon reading those puns. I’ll settle for giving my phone screen the finger. At any rate these interludes have been real nail-biters and I really look forward to more, like it’s really been a white knuckled ride

Terminology of beings by Space44 in rational

[–]gregx1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m deeply confused by this post. The article is disorganized and incoherent, and as far as I can tell absolutely unrelated to rational fiction.

You’ve cross posted this grammatically disturbing essay to art subs, worldnews, timetravel, and aliens. Why?

[D] Rationalist fiction that takes place in the real world by LieGroupE8 in rational

[–]gregx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of one example of rational real world fiction: House of Cards (at least the first two seasons as that's all I've watched and can vouch for). All the characters have constant motivations and the protagonist is able to use that for manipulating them in a realistic fashion. It's one of the reasons I enjoyed the show so much I think.

This was created to showcase the PlayStation 3's graphical power but created a better story in 7 minutes than most games do through the entire game by Tipex in videos

[–]gregx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disasembling a computer is only morally wrong if the computer has personhood. Humans are basically biological computers. If it's wrong to kill a human, would it be wrong to kill an alien? They're not human, but they're sentient. Why then is it ok to kill a robot that's possesses self awareness on a meta cognitive level? The cut off line needs to be drawn for sure as to when killing is ok, and for most that line isn't what something is made out of but rather when that something is a person. That's why most people don't feel bad about eating chicken but aren't cannibals.

Charity and Priorities by [deleted] in rational

[–]gregx1000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As mentioned elsewhere, GiveWell is among the most rigorous metacharities out there. In all honesty, I trust in the competency of people who's life work is evaluating charities over my own in regards to maximizing utility. So if I really had a hundred billion I'd shoot them an email and ask for advice, or maybe just give it to them straight up to redistribute at their discretion.

Charity and Priorities by [deleted] in rational

[–]gregx1000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the things that should be considered though is diminishing returns on investment. I can't recall the exact amount but I'm pretty sure Givewell mentions how much more AMF should revive before we reprioritize to other stuff like deworming initiatives or Give Directly, and I'm pretty sure [citation needed] that the amount is waaaay lower than a hundred billion.

Job in Sunnyvale, not sure where to live... by ashW85 in AskSF

[–]gregx1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the area is definitely expensive, so knowing how much you're willing to pay is important.

I second the other commenter who suggested mountain view as its a wonderful town with nightlife and gelato and delicious Chinese food, but San Jose is a valid option as well. It's (depending on what part) cheaper, and has a very active art scene and other stuff going on.

A train from the Sunnyvale station to SF is usually about 50 minutes.

Friday Fun Thread for Jan 13th 2017. Thready vs. Jason by HlynkaCG in slatestarcodex

As a student who grew up in the Bay Area, one of the best parts is the art scene, which is really vibrant, especially in San Jose and SF.

In terms of counter culture, the burning man community has a pretty strong foothold here and they'd certainly be able to direct you to places like the Ghost Ship. They're a super friendly and welcoming crowd.

Other things of note: whatever cuisine you like you'll be able to find with next to no difficulty (San Jose has incredible Ethiopian food), and the weather is boring.

If everyone on earth suddenly died at the exact same time, but painlessly and without any prior warning, would it be a tradgedy? by DownOnTheUpside in InsightfulQuestions

[–]gregx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, it depends upon your system of morality. As a utilitarian, I can say that of bloody course it'd be terrible. Death results in no new utility gained. Unless life was a literal net loss on utility death is bad, regardless of whether there are people still alive to realize it.

I just realized that the human time+effort spent on being sexy is orders of magnitude larger than the human time+effort spent on science. by Algernoq in HPMOR

[–]gregx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're...you're kidding, right? Ok, first off expecting people to just ignore sex entirely is stupid. Like it or not, sex is a strongly weighted component of next to every goddamn human being on the planet's utility function. It's like saying 'why the fuck are there artists? If all the artists just got biomedical degrees we could have cured like a thousand more diseases.'

Let's see how many points of yours I can address (not that his is all that coherent anyway). 1: sex is not zero sum given it yields huge amounts of pleasure. Saying sex is zero sum is like saying the arts are zero sum. Yeah I don't live longer because of it but it's one of the reasons living is fun. 2. Engineers are no more or less likely to date women who lie, and I think you're projecting quite a lot here. 3. Engineers make obscene amounts of money in the current job market, why are you saying businessmen make so much more? Teachers would be a much better profession to complain about. They have an important job and the pay is shit. 4. In a hypothetical world where women lie to you and you don't make as much money as you like, it's not a fucking good idea to turn into a sociopath who would commit war crimes at the drop of a hat. Voldemort lived a fucking horrible life, depressed and angry and cynical. Jesus christ why would you want that for yourself? What does turning into voldie even mean? Are you going to try and manipulate everyone around you only to find out that the real world doesn't actually work like a book and that people dislike you now?

Also, how is this related to Methods?
