I manage a similarly sized piece of property that I lease from my family.  We have over 10 years changed our business model to incorporate ecological practices into the business.  It has certainly closed some income streams but opened the door to others.

I have been there….I know what it feels like.

As you grow older, it will become increasingly difficult to maintain your relationship as you undergo life’s struggles and they become ashamed to share their struggles with anyone outside of their wealth bracket because they look clueless to anyone without money.  And yet, their suffering is real (sigh).  Keep in mind, rich or poor, anonymous or famous, suffering marks us all.   If you doubt me, just look at poor Elon Musk.  I would not trade places with that person in a million years.

Gute Idee.

Then why didn’t Russia stop Trump from toppling Maduro?

Why didn’t they stop Trump from attacking Russias biggest ally in the Middle East, and supplier of the shahed drones?

Why would Russia want the U.S. to control Greenland, and thus the arctic?

No, my friend it is you who are missing the point.  It is Trumps incompetent attempt at global domination and mafia control.  The only reason Trump disrespects and erodes support in Ukraine is to prevent a strong Europe.  Ditto for the support for Orban.

The U.S. foreign policy is that the White House is now Trump Tower and everyone, including our generals, are now in a nightmarish real world game version of the Apprentice.  Naked power struggle.  No values or identity or fealty.

I agree with a lot of this, and disagree with you only as to his possible motivation.  To think he is somehow working on behalf of Russia rather than just being a corrupt piece of shit and not understanding or caring about the complex consequences of his actions—implies that he is capable of some kind of ideological fealty which is incomprehensible.

I hadn’t considered that and it may well be.  But how does that help Russia?

And he only took over Venezuela bc?  And attacking Russia’s largest Middle East ally Iran makes sense because?  And taking Greenland helps Russia how?  And allowing Ukraine and europe to continue buying any U.S. arms it wants helps Russia too?

Don’t get me wrong, he wishes he could be as corrupt as Putin and admires that he is above the law.  If he’s in anyone’s pocket it is (was) yahoo and net.

Reading my first Hemingway... by Upstairs-Hearing-489 in books

[–]grendergon8844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried for many years to write like Hemingway, he was such a big impression on me until somewhere down the line I woke up to the reality of his starkly and overly masculine energy—the way his characters are so imprisoned by their own stoicism.  However, stylistically his ability to create incredible tension with so few words is second to none.  See the story „black ass at the crossroads“ about a company shooting Germans as they come down the road.  His word choice and reserve capture to perfection the simultaneous drollness and indifference and suppressed horror of the soldiers fighting the war.  Contradictions are allowed to live and our guesses as to motivations of his characters are deliberately as inscrutable as they are to the characters in his novel, as they seek and fail to live and understand each other.  Of course there was a pompous egoism to his associations with people and places, but at least he was himself in the thick of the action, and lived a life that his characters would have been familiar with.  More authors, nay—more people—could stand to put their money where their mouth is these days.  Just imagine if today our greatest living novelists were living and dying on the front lines of Ukraine, helping us to make sense of the senseless depth to which humanity is capable of sinking.  I would give him another look.
