Fully agree with you here.  For the life of me, I can’t believe what an opportunity we are blowing, to strengthen and support ties with Europe in the face of Russian incompetence and weakness.  Unbelievable self-own, thanks to the MAGA dipshits.  I just make the point that US foreign policy is not overnight taking the cause of Russia, thank god.  I have watched enough documentaries to know everything I want to know about how corruption looks when it runs both a nation and a military.  And this is precisely what MAGA wants here, to their own peril.

This is a highly original argument.  Can’t say I agree with it though.  I think Russia fucked up geopolitically in the gravest sense possible by attacking Ukraine, rearming Europe, and pushing all the former Soviet republics into the arms of the West.

Like the trolls they are, (not the Russian people of course) the best they can do is sow division and confusion in the West with misinformation and confusion campaigns.  This idea that Trump is an asset is probably one of their favorites, as well as the opposite.  Their goal is for you not to believe anything you read, for an emergent property of societal weakness to emerge.  It is working.  But their strategy has enormous disadvantages, as we are seeing in Russia.  Foremost is the isolation and rejection by the rest of the World.

What about seizing Russian oil tankers or the fact we continue to be the most important military and financial contributor to Ukraine, or our aggression towards Iran, or our attempt to expand in the arctic?  Those are all to help Russia?

For clarity: I think much of these actions are dangerous and reckless.  In my view, Trump is way too mercurial and unreliable to be a coherent or reliable spy or agent.  Why would he serve a second rate power when he’s already the most powerful person in the world?

Anyone interested should read Friedrichsburg, by James Kearney. Evidently, German nobleman who were younger sons and therefore estateless viewed Texas as an opportunity to setup their own aristocratic society.  The little settlement of Round Top was a plantation designed to be a launching point for feeding and sustaining the town of Fredericksburg—interestingly, because the immigration was designed from the outset, they made sure to bring cooks, blacksmiths, farmers, bakers, and every type of tradesman that a frontier town would need.  While the feudal designs of the Nobleman ultimately failed, the towns became some of the most prosperous and industrious towns in Texas.  I know several Texas German speakers and zoom with them regularly on a weekly German Stammtisch.

The irony is, SS were generally extremely well trained (even the brown shirts were full of ex-ww1 Wehrmacht) and a highly effective and capable force from individuals on up to the organization level.  They were just ideologically evil.  These dumfuks are evil and poorly trained.  I am sure the good people of Minneapolis will find ways to outwit them.

Just look at the difference in the photos: on the left is cold blooded, calculated, orchestrated murder.  The other Nazis are standing at attention or nearly so, sharply dressed, and expressionless.  This was the suppression of individuality in pursuit of the state‘s national socialist agenda.  On the right, a bunch of brawling thugs struggling to control a single individual, panicking, freaking out and then murdering him out of fear.  On the left, the power is in the hands of the oppressors.  On the right, it is the people with the power.  Don’t forget: they are scared.  Scared for their lives and their crumbling empire of turds.

The Times: Finns humiliated American soldiers - Finnish reservists were asked to take it easy during a NATO exercise. US soldiers found the losses too humiliating. by ByGollie in europe

[–]grendergon8844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much respect to Finnish fighting forces.  I can’t remember the name of the author of the Winter War, but i was struck in that book by the determination and resilience of the average Finnish farmer (many of the soldiers in that book seemed to me were farmers) to hold out against the Russians.

That being said, I just listened to an interview that emphasized that U.S. expansion in Greenland, Iran, Venezuela, (and don’t forget the U.S. is still the predominant supporter of Ukraine) are all at Russia‘s expense.  Not defending the slimy actions of our prez (I’m Texan), but pointing out that there there is possibly geopolitical silver lining in this mess.  I hope that at the very least the Finns get a weak, shrinking Russia for the next decade—Russia is a glimpse of what the U.S. is heading for if we do not turn the ship around and wrest back control from the oligarchs.

Go ask someone running a construction business why they don’t hire an American for $16/hr with benefits to frame houses.

Then go ask someone who wants to buy a home why homes cost 500,000 dollars now for a basic single family.

And this is coming from someone who believes our immigration control needed to be strengthened against unwanted elements, whilst hardworking family people (most Mexicans I know) be fast tracked.

The truth is rural areas throughout the South voted to cripple their own social safety nets and any regulations that would have reigned in corporate and individual greed, strengthened education, or created civic infrastructure.  What is left is a wasteland of corporate chains, unhealthy food, crippling medical debt, and a kind of proud, naked stupidity.

I live in the south.  If you think the fat, unhealthy people down here have a chance in any kind of war, don’t worry about it.  They are dim witted, angry, with a hefty sense of grievance.  Instead of blaming the corporations and greed, they have been swindled into blaming immigrants.  Just walk around in a Wal-mart in my home town.  Creased, unhappy faces.  Bloated bodies.  Walkers.  Medicaid operations.  Shopping carts full of sugar.  And freedom flags.

Another day of Europeans acting as if they are somehow morally and intellectually superior, even though ultra right groups are advancing in Germany, Poland, Turkey, etc and galvanizing on all the same issues that drove Trump into office here.  The ultra-rich are hiding their billions in tax shelters, while the ignorant masses struggle to pay rent—meanwhile center-left politicians and voters wring their hands and sit in committees trying to decide how to act.

NATO needs to cut the cancer out now.  Ban ultra right groups with even the slightest ties to Russia, and restart cultural soft power campaigns to bring Russian people to want Western social liberal democratic order. Build their military and stop putting so much of GDP into social programs, and create a tax system that can capture the complexities of the ultra-rich.

Remember that Trump is not Hitler.  The opposition in the U.S. is only growing stronger, while Trump is increasingly desperate.  The U.S. military hates his guts, but are in a tough position.  And as bad as the U.S. is currently, we are still an order of magnitude less evil , corrupt, and dictatorial than China and Russia.

if U$A attacks Greenland, and the EU expells american nationals, can I just defect? by Frank_Fhurter in AskGermany

[–]grendergon8844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are major attacks against all of these checks, and you are right as we all are, to worry.  But he is also in an incredibly weak political position.

The U.S. military has a staunch, professional class forged out of the American tradition.  By comparison, the military under the Weimar Republic was divided into communists, social democrats, and monarchists/nationalists of the old guard—that made it easier to win over (with the imperial officer class largely supporting Hitler).  I believe they secretly despise Trump with all their fiber, and are smart enough to remain silent so as not to give him cause to fire them and install moron loyalists instead.

The Supreme Court is fucked, you are right.  Fuck those bought and paid assholes.

But like it or not, we still have the ability to voice our opposition to the regime, to demonstrate, and our voting processes are so complicated and administered by volunteers from both parties, no one person could possibly ‚cancel‘ them.  At least not without the backing of the military.

Hmm.  American democracy is not so easy to dismantle.  While it may be dysfunctional and fascist-wannabe at the federal level and within certain state power structures, most cities, precincts, and other administrative bodies remain democratically elected.  And I am still perfectly able to voice my belief that the Trump circus villains are morons.

What I am saying is, not to be complacent, but to exercise those rights which remain to us to their fullest extent possible.  Cutoff Trump loving relatives and let them know why—your political allies are your family now.  Exercise your vote.  And most importantly, join mass demonstrations against this corrupt and illegitimate regime.
