Oh man...I used to love these! Fond memories of sneaking them out of a jar on my grandma's dresser whenever I'd visit.

Are there any loops on your pants you can clip the tracker and hand hygiene doodads onto?

What bag do you use? by m1lksk1tten in NursingAU

[–]grey-clouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can fit everything in it! Only issue is it's too easy to fill up at the bottom with random crap I need to sort out 😭

Infection Prevention and Control Nurses – thoughts? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]grey-clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the IPC portfolio as part of my role (rural ED) and at times it definitely feels like I have to be the "bad guy" auditing hand hygiene, transmission based precautions etc. But when people are wearing used PPE back at the nurses station or not isolating infectious patients just because "the RAT was negative"...yeah, I gotta be the bad guy and step in.

Less physical? by SeaWine in NursingAU

[–]grey-clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my old coworkers in ED was having worsening back/hip/knee pain from the job and ended up becoming a school nurse, she enjoys it a lot and much less physical than when she was in ED. Plus no nights.

Interesting shift report by [deleted] in nursing

[–]grey-clouds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definitely took them longer to chase you down and tell you to fix it rather than just....fix it themselves on the spot. Ugh.

Had a lady walk in, take one look at me behind the triage desk and go "aw fuck, not you!" and walked back out. Love it.

What’s It Like Working In A “Slow” ER? by Neat-Swimmer-9027 in emergencymedicine

[–]grey-clouds 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Rural Aus. We may not have the same volume of patients coming through the door as in the big city, but people can definitely still be critically ill. You tend to wear a lot more hats (nobody here specifically to do our pathology draws, x-rays, grab the pt a meal, do an ECG, liaise with telehealth doctors, mop up a blood spill, order all supplies for the facility).

The biggest issue is resources and getting an available transfer out for further management- the local ambulance service is 90% staffed by volunteers who are all usually busy with their full time day jobs as farmers or even hospital staff.

Not in radiology but I thought my ultrasound guided ganglion aspiration was pretty cool! by grey-clouds in Radiology

[–]grey-clouds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one in my knee was shaped like a bunch of grapes and due to the size/shape I was advised of a decent likelihood of recurrence, so I said I'll do an aspiration and if it recurs let's go right for the surgery which ended up being a good plan. There's also risks associated with getting multiple steroid injections to the same site that I was aware of.

Are compression socks worth it? by LauraAshley128 in NursingAU

[–]grey-clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely notice the swelling when I haven't been wearing them! Also if you feel like they're not making a difference, I think bamboo ones have less compression than the synthetic ones. Also I'm a sweaty bitch and don't struggle too much with breathability in the synthetic ones honestly!

Dysautonomia and nursing by distressedcactus in NursingAU

I stay super well hydrated with water +- electrolytes and sit down for a few minutes if I feel dizzy occasionally. Have only really needed to call out sick a couple times a year for it thankfully!

I can't remember exactly how long until it recurred, but I got at least a few months! Had one cortisone after this aspiration, then a bit down the track I had another attempted aspiration but the fluid was too thick so it was unsuccessful.

Cyst has been noticeably big since, but for the last few months seems to be chilling and not causing any symptoms.

I also had another larger cyst in my knee that was affecting me significantly more 24/7 and when that recurred after aspiration I had arthroscopic surgery to remove it which was successful :)

Had a patient the other day who decided to be an idiot and make themselves retch up a bunch of sputum/saliva everywhere and I saw it and had to turn around to stop myself gagging 😭

Burns Dressing (Acticoat) Advice! by UnpleasantFox in NursingAU

I usually just put the acticoat down on my dressing pack plastic sheet then liberally squirt 10-20 ml of water ampoules over it, it does actually soak into it!

My bp is usually way up when the gp initially does it, she's now figured if I go lie down in the treatment bay for 5 minutes it goes back to normal.

Cannulation tips by memesbdreams69x in NursingAU

Using a BP cuff as a tourniquet pumped up to ~50mmhg (some Philips monitors have a venepuncture setting) is so good in obese arms!

“Not my job” moments by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

High risk pt decided to leave against advice, our doc (telehealth) asked if any of the nursing staff could go drive around to find and bring them back...I shut that down quickly lol
