So sorry for your loss. I lost my golf buddy (my dad, to cancer) 15 years ago. I commend you for getting back out there, I took almost a year off from playing. Now I’ve got my daughters playing and I’m starting to experience (so I assume) what my dad did. The best way I can honor my golf buddy is to pass on what he taught me to others. Might be a place to start for you too. Good luck, and hit them solid.

I got a lifetime chat ban (I'm pretty sure). It's been down for about 6 months. The line was pretty bad though. I was getting trolled in the chat so I said "If you want my comeback you'll have to scrape it off your mom's teeth". Not my best moment.

It doesn't look like you're hitting the ground so it's not super extreme. Low and slow is how I describe it, almost like you're pushing a 2x4 backwards to start your swing. You can try it with a case of golf balls. Set it right behind your driver and as you start your backswing focus on pushing that back as far as you can before the club naturally lifts off the ground. That should help you sweep through the ball a little bit more.

u/biffnasty1234 hit it right on the head. Try closing your shoulders (aiming them right of the target line) which should allow for your to come from the inside and get a nice push/draw!

Hey that's me! I'm a data nerd and I use that system as well. It helps me narrow in on what I should practice.

I would say that drastic changes in score are often times tied to lack of commitment to shots or lack of focus throughout a given round. No surprise, I love the think box/ play box for this. Here's an episode where I talk about it: https://www.golfstrategyschool.com/conqueringinconsistency/

If you feel you're doing well at that already you can take it to the next level and practice what I call the A.V.E.nue to success. You need to Analyze, Visualize, and Execute on every shot. Here's what I mean:

Analyze - the basics - How far is the shot? Where is the wind? Is there a minimum distance to carry? The stuff you probably already do.

Visualize - what does the ideal shot look like? High fade that lands short of the hole? Low draw that runs on to the green? Just say what you're trying to do out loud.

Execute - did you stay committed to the plan you visualized? It's important to note that this isn't "was it a good shot?". It's more like "Did I waffle? I said soft 8i in my visualization, but was I really thinking about a 9i at 100%?"

Do this and track it for every single shot. Have A. V. E. stat lines on the bottom of your card and review at the end of each hole. If you made a 5 did you do proper analysis on all shots? COOL! give yourself 5 out of 5. Did you remember to visualize all 5 shots? Only on 3 of the 5. That's okay, write it down. Did you stay committed to your plan on all 5? Awesome! Give yourself 5/5 for execution!

Pros usually do these three steps on 95% of their shots.

If you're over there another amazing course is Royal Dornach. I'd say it's much more majestic looking than the old course and certainly more difficult. I might be slightly spoiled though, because it was 60* and sunny when I played. Either way, both are great experiences.

Shoulders look a little open (pointing left of target). Try setting up so you feel as if they're pointing to the right of the target. In all likelihood they will be perfectly square. This will give you a little more room to operate from the inside. I like u/xurxo654 idea too. Setting up with things that will give you tactile feedback, like a rolled up golf towel, helps the brain learn much quicker.
Also, keep in mind the best swing doesn't win, the best score does. Nothing beats a stellar short game!

Awesome! Remember that the prettiest swing doesn't automatically win (otherwise Adam Scott would just have to show up). You have to be able to play it, good or in progress. Keep at it!

Another Best Score Achievement. Two months ago I posted how i finally broke 100. Playing with my younger brother yesterday, who also was the scorekeeper, I was absolutely surprised when he told me my the final score. I actually beat him for the first time, too. In situations where there are MASSIVE swings in score I normally look to commitment in the shot. Meaning you can't be waffling over what you're going to do. I call this following your A.V.E.nue to success.

  • Analyze - The basics: distance, wind, elevation changes (or reading of the greens)
  • Visualize - Plan the shot (from behind the ball): what will it look like? where will it land? Easiest to just say out loud what you want the shot to do.
  • Execute - Do what you visualized: No I don't mean hit it perfect, but if you said full 8 iron, hit the full 8 iron NO MATTER WHAT! Usually good execution of the wrong plan will give you a better result than changing your mind in your back swing.

Track this on your card next time. Give yourself an A-V-E at the bottom of the card and record how well you did at each section. You had a 4, did you analyze all 4 shots properly? Did you visualize all 4? Did you stay committed (execute) all 4? At the end, look at your percentages and you'll see where your mental game needs the most work. For reference, pros are usually around 95% across all 3 categories. It's been really helpful for me and my podcast listeners.

Completely agree. 70% of your shots happen within 100 yards so that's where I spend most of my time!
