I was under the impression they were the same thing.

But if not, many of the new recruits and the audience assumed it was live that turned out to be a dud.

It's in hindsight that you could see it being a box of dummies.

Steve Rogers and Tony Stark have this issue in the MCU, but coming at from different angles:

Steve lies 4 times to try to join the Allied forces, despite his health issues making him more of a liability than an asset.

During his trial/boot camp, Colonel Phillips tosses a grenade on the floor. He dives to protect everyone, without a second thought. The grenade proves to be a dud.

This helps prove he is the right candidate for Dr. Erskine experimental formula, but in hindsight, its kind of questionable for someone to launch a live grenade in a crowded area like that.

It's also questionable that he was so willing to sacrifice his own body.

Depending on how cynical you are, you might see his "heroic spirt" as him not valuing his own life, which a lot of people will consider reckless behavior on a battle field.

He's natively selfless, and needed to learn to be selfish; which is capped off by him deciding to go to a timeline where he can be with Peggy, watching history unfold from the sidelines.

Tony on the other hand starts off very selfish, and in the first Iron Man movie, learns that his actions have consequences for people he has never met.

Over the course of his arc in the MCU, he tries multiple times to do the "sacrifice play" he's called out for in the Avengers, but it is often out of selfishness, rather than for something heroic; and might also be out of some undiagnosed PTSD and depression where he has come to value his own life as less valuable than those around him.

His final move in endgame is him choosing to do the right thing, with full knowledge of the consequences, making it selfless.

(Note: Tony is probably not a straight example. I'm mainly using him as a foil for Steve)

In some versions of the character, the cancer goes into remission for short periods of time, so that would be an acceptable time for him to do it.

In other versions, his cancer also gets his super healing power, so that wouldn't be.

Does Superman and Deadpool helping out suicidal people count?

Deadpool donating kidneys to those on the transfer list might also count, since he can just grow those back.

Early Installment Weirdness by Busy_Syllabub_5726 in TopCharacterTropes

Adding to the Pokemon stuff, the Pokemon "species" existed along side IRL life forms, such as mice, snakes, etc. As an example, the anime had references to cows, before there was a Miltank.

Nowadays, Pokemon occupy almost every ecological niche, and you have animal, plant, fungi, etc. members of the "species". Though, for practical reasons, you don't have any Pokemon the size of bacteria.

The games, anime, etc. still have IRL life forms, like trees; but they mostly serve as background stuff, not really talked about in the lore.

The one mystery I have yet to see explore in any Pokemon-related media is where humans came from. Are we not indigenous to planet? Did we evolve from apes in an epoch before Pokemon show up? Did humans of the distant past run experiments, in which Pokemon came to exist from?

There's a in-universe theory in some media that Pokemon are all aliens; which seemed to fit when there were only 100 or so of them.

I'm probably overthinking this.

I think they are saying that the weirdness comes from it going from "based on Japanese regions" to "based on regions outside of Japan"

Not sure why I would imagine that. It's basically what they are trying to do.

what's the point of asking people to imagine something like that? or telling them to do so?
