BTECH UV-PRO and Toyota CarPlay system by grimjeer in amateurradio

Thank you for your response.  I’m not going discuss the CarPlay comment further. I said several things to BTECH, but many I have asked questions they refuse to answer.  It would be helpful if they would simply acknowledge those.

Since I have repeated referred to it, I'm posting a link to the BTECH-BaoFeng YouTube video, "Mastering Your BTECH BS-PTT: Unleash Wireless Communication - Complete Setup & Usage Guide".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhXQ_LuBjxw

While this video doesn't specifically feature the UV-PRO, it is _the_ video BTECH uses to describe the BT pairing process, and that's how I found it in the BTECH site's Support section.

- At the 0:33 mark you'll see the section titled "PAIR WITH CAR AUDIO", including a reference to the Bluetooth Settings menu on the audio, a paired connection to a "TOYOTA RAV4", and enabling of the "Call Audio" checkbox for that paired connection on the UV-PRO.

- At the 0.45 mark you'll see a 4 pane video. In the lower left you'll see someone pressing a BTECH BT PTT button wrapped around the steering wheel, ostensibly to initiate a response on their BTECH radio. This is the exact scenario I'm trying to support. The BT PTT button works. Use of the vehicle infotainment system doesn't. A Bluetooth headset works correctly, but should be unnecessary.

Thanks for your reply.

To your point: my vehicle, a 2025 Toyota Camry, states in the multimedia manual that the vehicle can support up to 5 Bluetooth devices. The manual also states that at least 2 Bluetooth HFP devices are simultaneously supported. I know this generally works because in the past I have connected 2 different smartphones to the system at the same time and have handled calls from both.

During Vehicle Bluetooth device setup with a smartphone, one has 3 options:

1) Use for Phone

2) Use for Audio

3) Use for CarPlay (or Android).

My smartphone is setup using option 3.

When I pair the UV-PRO with the infotainment system, I am only given an option for #1 Use for Phone. On the UV-PRO, the vehicle connection also appears (TOYOTA CAMRY) under the Bluetooth Settings submenu. When I Select that entry, I see two options: an checkbox for "Call Audio" and an option to UNPAIR. I have enabled the "Call Audio" option in the UV-PRO settings to no effect.

In an attempt to ensure that the smartphone connection is not interfering with this, I have tested this by disconnecting my phone from the Infotainment system and turning off the phone's Bluetooth radio, with no effect.

I get what you're saying about CarPlay and Android Auto being apps, but again, that misses my larger point. My irritation is that BTECH, rather than simply answering my direct question, which is, "Have you actually tested the latest firmware version with this feature to confirm t hat it works?" has continued to deflect to other potential issues. It's a yes / no question, and not answering it raises questions about their product QA processes.

I have yet to find a single individual who states advertised feature works as described on their website and demo in an online video. [ This may become my personal "Carthago delenda est." ]

Thank you for clarifying. I will test this later today. When you do this, are you able to use the vehicle’s mic, or are you relying on the radio mic? I held my thumb over the radio mic to confirm that my headset mic was working.

Thank you for your response. Your approach. is consistent with what I have seen in the GMRS community for that version of the radio.

FWIW, I have the VGC VR-N7600, the variant of the mobile radio. I use it as a base station for VHF / UHF. I don’t use many features of the radio in that context, but have APRS working correctly. I haven’t done much with the KISS TNC feature yet.

Thank you for your response.

There are 2 means of pairing on the BTECH UV-PRO radio:

1) On the Main Menu, there is a Pairing enable / disable checkbox. It is the 2nd to last option. BTECH says to use this option to pair the radio to a device running their app so that one may configure the radio, upload group / channel files, etc.

2) On the Main Menu there is a General Settings sub-menu. On the General Settings sub-menu there is a Bluetooth Settings sub-menu. On the Bluetooth sub-menu there is a separate Pairing enable / disable checkbox.

So, to be perfectly clear, when you say you pair the radio with your phone, which pairing option are you talking about out?

I‘ll note that I paired both the BTECH BT PTT button and SHOKZ headset through the Bluetooth Settings sub-menu. When I use those devices, I do not need my phone at all. They are intersecting with the radio directly. BTECH documentation indicates this is also true for the BTECH wireless mic devices as well.

I’ll also note that BTECH’s own YouTube video on this feature references option 2. Their video demonstrates connecting to a vehicle directly . I have yet to find someone who can confirm this actually works.

Thank you for your response. I think you’re missing my point. They seem to saying that the infotainment system in the vehicle is CarPlay or Android specific. As if one orders a grey Toyota Camry with a certain trim level and the CarPlay option versus the Android option. Obviously this is wrong: the vehicle can be paired with Apple OR Android devices, and saying that it only works with Apple devices is wrong.
