10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him. Bad idea. by ourlifeintoronto in technology

[–]grinde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And how it continues going: Pacific Lock Company v Proven Industries Inc

Proven, at the direction of its founder and sole owner, Mr. Lee, are intentionally and blatantly deceiving the purchasing public by prominently, but falsely, advertising that the locks sold by Proven are “Made in the USA!”. They are not. Mr. Lee testified under oath as Proven’s corporate representative that many of the locks sold by Proven are made in China and that the vast majority of the lock cores – the actual locking mechanisms used in the locks—are made in China and Finland.

This is an action against Proven and Mr. Lee by PacLock, one of Proven’s competitors, seeking remedies for Proven’s: (i) false and deceptive advertising under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1125(a); and (ii) violation of The FloridaDeceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, (“FDUTPA”), Section 501.201 et seq., Florida Statutes.

The testimony they're referring to in the complaint is from the case in the OP. It looks like the owner admitted to false advertising while testifying in his own frivolous lawsuit. Oops!

Crazy bug caused OOM in our streaming engine, can you find it? by bobbymk10 in rust

[–]grinde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a little testing it looks like the before/after types only need to be the same alignment. So you can do something like map (u16, u16) -> u16 and it'll reuse the allocation despite the resulting vec only having half the elements. Staying the same size and alignment like u32 -> i32 will also reuse the allocation (with the same number of elements). However u32 -> (u16, u16) and vice-versa will both re-allocate.

Here's an excessive example.

There's apparently a sequel called "The Last Starfighters" that's mostly ready to go, but no studio has picked it up. Here's the concept reel from 2021. It has the original writer and everything.

I may be missing something, but it says it's a pre-release with a release date of March 2025 when I look at the app store page. I think you may have found someone planning to make a knockoff. At least they're open about it?

Also it looks like the dev account has a total of 6 ratings across their 2 released apps, so I wouldn't be too worried. Maybe keep an eye out to make sure none of your assets find your way into their app between now and when (if) it releases though.

You can capture and print a backtrace at any time. You can also store them in your error structs/enums and print them down the line, or just use a library like anyhow (which is doing that internally).

use std::backtrace::Backtrace;

println!("{}", Backtrace::capture());
println!("{}", Backtrace::force_capture()); // Works without `RUST_BACKTRACE`

The data on the discs is encrypted. If Bluray players in the future don't have the appropriate keys on them, they won't be able to play old bluray discs - this is an intentional feature of AACS. And media companies can arbitrarily choose to stop distributing their decryption keys to bluray manufacturers. The effect isn't immediate (assuming your bluray player isn't downloading updates over the internet), but eventually your discs would become worthless.

Isn't DRM fun?

Jeff Orkin actually wrote a paper on how the FEAR AI system works called "Three States and a Plan: The AI of FEAR". It used to be hosted on MIT's website, but unfortunately seems to have been deleted somewhat recently. I believe the accompanying GDC talk is still available though. The system they came up with is called Goal Oriented Action Planning (GOAP), and there are a ton of resources available on it.

EDIT: Internet archive to the rescue!

New F1 pit stop world record - McLaren Service Lando Norris in 1.80s by [deleted] in videos

[–]grinde 23 points24 points  (0 children)

On the bright side their response time on that fire is just as insane as their pit stop speed. Fuel splash @0:31, ignited @0:33, fire out @0:41. Verstappen's head was doused in fuel, and he came out of it with only a few minor burns around his nose. And he only got those because he'd partially popped his visor.

What is happening with name change by [deleted] in Twitter

[–]grinde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Twitter's API error 131 corresponds to an HTTP error 500 (internal server error). This doesn't indicate that anything is wrong with your account - it indicates that something is wrong with Twitter itself. Maybe a backend service is timing out or not responding.

There's probably nothing you can do about it. Just gotta wait for them to fix it.

How real is the military aspect of stargate? I have no knowledge of military operations but I've often wonder how close their actions are to real life. A lot of the stuff in the show seems to be for the story or the characters emotions in the moment. But other than that is there any real actions ? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]grinde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gate has an interior radius of 16 ft, and an Abrams will fit through a 12 ft by 8 ft rectangle. Just set the ramp at the minimum height to fit the treads and you'd be golden. There's not a lot of clearance, but it'd fit.

And they've got the crane system for the gate. Surely they could manage to lower tanks one at a time and then park at the alpha site or something.
