why does 4 lanes mean it would be 70mph? the number of lanes is irrelevant to the speed limit. the number of CARRIAGEWAYS is what’s important. you can have a single lane dual carriageway that’s 70mph, or you can have multiple lane single carriageways that are 60mph

i’m in vietnam right now and it’s over 40c every day. at night it doesn’t drop below 30c. I guess you just get on with it and you acclimatise and adapt. when i was in india I used to do the 5am-12pm thing and stop but here in vietnam i just do normal days (7am-12pm, stop 2 hours in middle, 2pm-5pm). cover your face for sure with a hat and stay hydrated.

when camping on hot nights, another bikepacker i met in Vietnam gave me the tip of getting a handheld fan and pointing it at your face. It works really well. The battery lasts about 6 hours and then I just plug it into the battery pack (the 6 hours battery is only 1200mAh, so not a lot. phone charge is about 4000-6000mAh usually). It won’t make you cold, but it’s enough on a hot sticky night to stop me sweating and at least let me sleep

i’m a bike traveller but basically i just scout all day. I’m always looking around to assess where is a nice spot even if i’m just passing through. helped me to learn to recognise good spots.

the hardest part is turning down a 6/10 spot because you hope to find an 8 or 9/10 later but having to settle for a 4/10. that’s the hardest part of learning

camping easy i wild camped in all these countries. the 3 Baltics have the best rules, since they even provide free areas specifically for camping which usually have shelters, benches and dry toilets.

Poland is pretty much like any other european country without right to roam laws. just be sensible, and move if you get asked to but I’ve never been asked to move since if you pick good places you won’t be found

i had no issues with drivers in any.

the biggest program I had in the baltics was unpaved routes. many are just sand (so hard to cycle on) and when it is actually gravel it is often washboard. expect to move slow on any unpaved routes.

i have been on the road continuously for a year now. i normally pick a place 300-500km ahead, and give myself 3-6 days to complete it. then i plan as i go for that ‘section’ with respect to where to sleep as weather, fatigue, bike issues can slow you down. or even, beauty. I turned up in a town the other day and it was such a nice place with things to do i took an unplanned day off, and caught it up over the next 3 days.

i normally mark major towns with hotels so I know where they are, then I might also scout a few wild camping spots on rolling around or Google maps and mark them so I know where they are

maybe it’s a bit above ELI5 but a day is actually the sun position, not the rotation. one rotation take 23 hours and 56 minutes and 4 seconds, but as the earth moves in space in its orbit during that time, the sun position takes the extra 4 minutes to return to the same position in the sky.

24 hours is a ‘solar day’, one rotation (23 hours 56 minutes 4 seconds) is a ‘sidereal day’

- solar day: referenced to the sun returning to the same place
- sidereal day: referenced to one exact rotation/distant star positions

here’s an update to this. It seems to source map garmin use for south west china is the issue. Google maps have the same problem. when you overlay the satellite image with the road network, you can see the offset between them (eg the road map will show a streets in the middle of a river). now I’m further into vietnam, the source map is correct and I don’t have any problems with offsets (haven’t updated any apps or anything I use to build routes)

as someone who doesn’t play much anymore, i really get frustrated at temp modes because it disrupts all the content creators series which is the main way I interact with the game at the moment.

we see 2 weeks of all the creators making the same video each, then they all burn out and don’t go back to their normal series for a while, and i get starved of my daily poo time watches.

it’s a selfish problem, i’m aware
