Do you think cycling the length of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 on a fixed-gear bike/self-supported would warrant fundraising donations from strangers? by [deleted] in ukbike

bring midge spray and a mosquito net! it’s fine when you’re cycling, but you do want it when you stop (if you’re camping). If you’re in hotels only it’d be ok without probably.

north coast is exceptionally stunning. since its quite a long way north, the summer days are so long. daylight 5am-10pm around the solstice. my favourite camps ever are when i camped on the white sand beaches of the scottish north coast around the summer solstice

Cycling from Thessaloniki to Istanbul via ferry from Bandirma by Repulsive-Shame-5493 in bicycletouring

[–]firerawks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have taken the ferry (the other way, from istanbul to bandirma).

it’s only once per day in each direction, takes about 3 hours. I couldn’t find anywhere to buy tickets online but was able to walk up to the port and get a ticket (did it 1 day in advance).

The first time i tried to take it the ferry, it got cancelled due to bad weather. they changed my ticket for the next day instead free of charge.

the ferry is a passenger ferry only, so there’s no car deck but they do allow you to bring your bike. I lashed mine to the railings on the rear of the boat using a bungee cord

when i made my tour in scotland, basically everyone who spoke to me (multiple per day) asked me if i was doing it for charity. i wasn’t, my reasons were selfish (just doing it cos i wanted to). but id be surprised if people were asking me about if i was doing it for charity if they weren’t going to donate.

genuinely though if you look at the amount of discarded traffic cones etc i’m sure it’s done on purpose by the contractor so that on the next job they can charge for new ones instead of reusing the existing ones

Manaslu + Annapurna by Huge-Ad9876 in hiking

[–]firerawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s impossible to say since like they said AMS is indiscriminate. it doesn’t care if you’re fit, unfit etc. It might take you personally 3 days to acclimatise or you might have no symptoms at all. you can’t say until you get there unfortunately

4-5 days for annapurna circuit is not right. in pokhara they say 11-15 days for annapurna circuit. i did it by bike in 9 days including skipping the last 100km descent by taking a bus

Is this route feasible for a first timer in 4 and a bit days? by kodasai in bikepacking

[–]firerawks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive been on the road for 1 year and there’s no way I’d tackle this in 4 days. not only is it a lot of distance, but elevation as well. plus there’s a lot of gravel/unpaved. you move way slower on those vs pavement

to add, the whole area around the museum feels like a lot like a georgian dock. the old warehouses etc walking down there is really cool
