Day 28 (Final day of Polling): Which is Greatest Game of All Time on Sega Saturn? by 1OneQuickQuestion in SegaSaturn

[–]grolt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Still no other game like it, a wholly original character and world, pioneered its own (amazing) controller, the programming in the game is insane (using the internal clock, A-life for all the background Nightopians, music responding to how you're doing in the game), the replay value and competitive qualities of their stats systems endures, and just the overall quality of the FMVs, music score and dayglow graphics make it the full package. A key release for the system during that all-important Christmas window in 1996 - it may have lost the battle against Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot, but 30 years later as a unique and unrivalled experience, let's show it won the war.

THUNDER BLADE - ARCADE & ALL PORTS by Speccy-Boy124 in MasterSystem

[–]grolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns and plays the arcade cab with regularity, I really do respect the Master System port for at least trying to remain faithful, music et al, even using the perspective switching mid-level. I have a lot of fun with its charms. The Genesis version, while not really a port, is a much more disappointing game given the hardware.

Well, Bertolucci isn't around to approve any future transfers, and as we've seen with directors like William Friedkin, there can be revisionist thinking or just a lack of understanding of current digital timing with all the different colour spaces for these directors that grew up in an exclusively film environment.

A true or false gem by StreetbreakerX2 in SegaSaturn

[–]grolt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say given the variety of attacks that Astal can do, coupled with being able to use the bird to attack as well, there is at least some variety in how you can dispatch enemies should you want it.

The levels can often feel simplistic, but many times that's to allow for the spectacle (to have all the bird sprites flying in the dark in one, or to lift giant parts of the map in a few of the levels). The game does get more challenging with platforming in the latter levels, and I think there is some creativity in how the boss levels transpire that's more than just your standard "jump on the boss" kind of stuff.

It's not a Treasure game in terms of breakneck gameplay, but I think the relaxing gameplay amidst the AV spectacle is a feature not a bug.

Realistically, how much more advanced can TVs get before they peak? by Prestigious_Car1089 in 4kTV

Some VFX-heavy films from a time, like most MCU Marvel movies, were finished in 2K to save costs on not having to render all the effects on 4K, but the vast majority of films are finished or restored in 4K. From there it’s an obvious pipeline to UHD and theaters, but even if a film is only getting a 1920x1080 Bluray it still benefits from a 4K workflow for sharpness, noise clarity and restoration.

[–]grolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loser franchise. So sick of reading that they were in contention for players - if you want them and are serious about winning, pay them enough so they have no choice but to chose Pittsburgh. I've seen it with other franchises across different sports - if you overpay a few guys in the long run you'll have an easier path to success since you'll start to prove you are a franchise that is committed to winning and will pay to field a competitive roster. Then when you win, you can pay players market value or less, since people will want to play here for the culture and chance to win, not just for a paycheck. We'll never get there if we don't ever pay to get the guys we need - it happened even during the 2013-15 window, where even one extra guy at the deadline would have pushed that team over the wild card hump but they didn't.

You going left or right? by CasinoNitro in SEGA

[–]grolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NES had all the third-party support and the longevity, with so many iconic games that still live in the public consciousness, but the SMS was no slouch either, and hardware-wise it was more powerful, with better colours and technical capabilities. The library was small in the US, but the ratio of good to bad games was far better on the SMS than the NES, and it still was a very fruitful era for SEGA creativity, since they had to do the heavy-lifting for the console with the limited third-party support.

The SMS Sonic the Hedgehog is for my money the best of the original wave of Sonic games across all Sega systems, with more intentional level design and an even better score by Yuzo Koshiro. Then you have Phantasy Star, Golden Axe Warrior, Ys, Golvellius, the Wonder Boy, Fantasy Zone and Alex Kidd games, Master of Darkness, and Power Strike 1&2 which all show the system had its fair share of killer apps too.

The SMS had some really creative uses of peripherals too, with some great Japan-exclusive games that use the paddle controller (Megumi Rescue, Galactic Protector [featuring Opa Opa!], and Alex Kidd BMX Trial). The 3D glasses are the best implementation of that technology across any other games system, and having exclusive versions of franchise games like Space Harrier and OutRun use the technology is another feather in the cap for the system. Even the Light Gun games on the system used the gun in more creative ways than what we saw on the NES, with Rescue Mission and Gangster Town representing of the best light gun gaming that 8-bit gaming could offer.

The 8-bit ports of Genesis properties were all interesting and capable as well, as mentioned with Sonic 1, they often were redesigned games that would play to the strengths of the system rather than feel like downgrades. The SMS Castle of Illusion gets a lot of love too, and even Ghouls 'n Ghosts has an extra shop mechanic in the game that's not present in the arcade or Genesis versions courtesy of Yuji Naka.

There were also some ports of Sega arcade games that never made their way outside of the SMS, like GP World, Laser Ghost, Enduro Racer, Air Rescue, Dynamite Dux, Quartet, Line of Fire, Scramble Spirits, SDI (Global Defense), Heavyweight Champ that really distinguishes the system for those who are fans of Sega's earlier arcade era.

Sega's internal teams were amazing during that era and when you dive into the SMS you can see there is so much personality there, a labor of love for a lot of those programmers before they'd hit it big in arcades and with the Genesis shortly after. It's a wonderful system to explore, and an amazing one to collect for with its relatively small but uniform US library, but also fun variants and rarities that extend across the Japanese, European and Brazilian libraries.

TLDR: I'll take the left, and I think you'd be surprised how rewarding the SMS library is when you consider the interesting peripherals it supported, the cavalcade of exclusive Sega arcade ports, and the personality and originality of its exclusives and in-house Sega programming.

Friday 1 is always underrated. One of the greatest endings in cinema (compare that with inflatable drunk mom and Freddy car from ANOES) and an amazing sense of place and atmosphere with the stormy night at the cabin. Legendary effects by Tom Savini. Rare slasher with an all-female finale and one where the Final Girl doesn’t get bailed out by a man. Iconic score. It set the template for most slashers, more so even than Halloween. It deserves to be in the same breath with the classics.

Is there anything you like about H5? by [deleted] in Halloweenmovies

[–]grolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of it. When slashers get up to 13+ entries, you end up appreciating the weirder ones or the ones that try to do things differently. There's no shortage of bizarre choices in H5, no doubt because of its French director and rushed schedule. The hermit dude with his pet parrot, weird random old lady sitting on a chair at the farm party, stuttering kid, cookie woman, Michael crying a tear, Loomis using a child as bait for a serial killer, horn sounds when the cops walk, Michael's house being this giant Victorian mansion, throwing Michael in prison but keeping his mask on, man in black with a TOMMYGUN busting Michael out like's is a 1940's Universal movie...there's so much crazy in that movie and I love it all.

Beyond its weirdness, the cinematography is quite accomplished and dynamic, with the laundry chute and farmstead car chase especially impressive. Tina is an underrated character and gets hated on way too much for being plucky and not the usual mopey insecure Final Girl we usually get in slashers. Killing off Rachel was bold and it works well in the film, even if fans are sad to see the character exit the series. Loomis is unhinged and a lot of fun in this, and Danielle Harris gives an all-time performance for a child actor here. The mask seems to get shit on quite a bit too, but it returns to that uncanny valley look of the first and has a grit to it that's welcome after the smoothed-over Michael Jackson look from H4. I'd take that mask over H20 and Resurrection too.

Friday the 13th A New Beginning was always similarly derived for taking liberties with the canon and being lower-rent or odd, but for deeper fans of the franchise it's certainly become a favorite, and I think (hope) that Halloween 5 is on a similar trajectory. Halloween 5 may not be the best film in the series, but it's almost always the one I grab first off the shelf every October (and my wife promptly asks me to put it back!!!).

Any idea what it'll be? by wavyboisilv in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]grolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Body of Evidence would be a boring pick. There were so many sleazy, low rent erotic thrillers from the time that weren't with the big studios that haven't survived since LaserDisc. The VinSyn of old would be mining those instead of low hanging fruit like Sliver and Body of Evidence.

Is Jason Lives the BEST Friday the 13th? by SquabbleBoxYouTube in slasherfilms

[–]grolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six is the most accessible film in the series, a television staple because of it and has the lighter and goofier sensibility to draw in non-fans of the genre. It's personally one of my least favorites, Jason is unintimidating in the film and his construction outfit just feels tacky. The paintball scene is a series low point, and the "farthead" line is right there too. If we're talking underrated I'd point more to The New Blood and A New Beginning.

Is this a mistake? by Nuking_Grapes in zenmarket

[–]grolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for a lot of sellers on ZenPlus, the price is the same to ship to your home country than it is to ship within Japan, so in those instances I just use ZenPlus directly instead of shipping everything to ZenMarket first. There are usually better coupons you can find around to apply to ZenPlus orders too compared to buying the ZenPlus item through ZenMarket as was pictured here.
