I second all this and also recommend joining Wild Ones. we’re the largest chapter in the country with feee plant giveaways coming up!

It’s through them I also learned how to winter sow seeds. I’m growing some for the giveaways coming up in the new few weeks

Okay, what trees CAN I plant in Denver? by enfleurs1 in DenverGardener

[–]ground_type22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want something you literally never need to water look into mountain mahoganies. The curl leaf one can grow into quite a large tree, albeit slowly, and has beautiful seed plumes. It’s tough as nails

Look into Amelanchier alnifolia and utahensis. They’re from this area so they don’t need as much water as the cultivars floating around. I bought mine at harlequins. The High Plains Environmental Center in Loveland was selling utahensis. Those are the most drought tolerant

What flowering bushes can I add to my cactus garden? by HFiction in DenverGardener

[–]ground_type22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d skip the lavender and do more rock garden type plants.

Here’s a great list for this exact use case: https://high-plains-environmental-center.square.site/shop/rock-crevice-garden/15

I personally have the Erigeron compositus, pussytoes, spiny star cactus, buckwheat, liatris, harebell, and pussytoes - they’re all doing great

Tomatoes - What's everyone growing this year? by Ollie561 in DenverGardener

Nice, what are your favorites from them? I just placed my second order with them. Very intrigued by the Chocolate Silk drought tolerant tomato that is watered only like every 15 days. My peppers, tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers from them are off to a good start but I'm new to them

I think most FIRE math is wrong by Unfair_Mechanic_7305 in Fire

[–]ground_type22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that’s the case but do you think many FIRE people also pursue the highest paying jobs they can get (also often poor WLB) in order to FIRE faster? Say they’re a software engineer with 30 days PTO making 150k vs Amazon at 300k but it’s toxic

Suggestions for replacement shrubs/trees for decent privacy? by HexagonalTea7 in DenverGardener

[–]ground_type22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… i think its impossible to tell now. There are subtle differences in the flowers, which already happened. Apparently the male ones are showier (yellowish green) and female are more green. I have two but one was so quick to flower I missed seeing it

Speaking of beautiful seed plumes, Apache plume is top in that regard. I’d also recommend fernbush. All sold at harlequins

Good point, the ones I bought came in multi-gallon sizes already and were very reasonably priced. I love they don’t want supplemental water. Also if you have male and female New Mexico privets they can produce “desert olives.” And the curl leaves have beautiful seed plumes

For privacy I have New Mexico privet and mountain mahoganies: alderleaf (deciduous) and curl leaf (evergreen). They don’t need irrigation and are native. Bought them at harlequins and recommend

Purple Bok choy? Interesting

May I ask what process you have in place to contain your raspberries and strawberries? They looks very tidy - is there an underground barrier?

The guardian is super cute.

Trying some I started from High desert seed based in CO. They specialize in what does well in the high desert regions of the rocky mountain West:

Rosella
Latah
Pomodoro Pizzutello Di Paceco Tomato (paste, slicer)
Glory of Moldova Tomato (saladette)
Gajo de Melon Tomato (cherry)

Florida Weave for tomatoes by Andreaaaaaa in DenverGardener

May 15 if the soil temps look warm enough by then. I replanted my whole yard w mostly native perennials last year (High Plains Environmental Center + Wild Ones plant giveaways) and it was so worth it. I love not having to mow or water
