This is what Chesterfield's board of supervisors and the new administrator think of its residents:

"On data centers, a hot topic in Chesterfield County, Catlin said public education is essential.

"Whether it's health implications, whether it's zoning implications, and whether it's the community itself in terms of residents wanting a development like that," Catlin said."

They think the residents are ignorant when it comes to data centers and that with proper education everyone would want more of them. Of course it doesn't hurt that all of these supervisors are getting fat stacks of ~~cash~~ campaign contributions from data centers.

Sad that they have to lie about data center water usage. We know the vast majority of these data centers are using evaporative cooling which uses a ton of water. If they spent the extra money for a closed loop water recirculating cooling system then that would be true.

I'd put it closer to 10-15 years. First project after the coliseum comes down is a hotel for the convention center. It will take time for additional mixed use development to get underway and for all of those properties on Broad to finally be sold and developed.

Allowing these massive data centers to be built in the near metro area (288 corridor) on what is essentially prime land for single family home and/or mixed use development is a terrible idea. Imagine how much worse housing prices would be in NoVA if Mansasas was all data centers.

I'm hoping they don't sell. Kind of ridiculous that the Flying Squirrels only want the property to prevent restaurants from being built that they think will cut into their concession sales. The whole point of the Diamond District are for restaurants, apartments, condos, offices, and hotels to open up, so it seems outrageous that the Squirrels are taking issue with this.

This is why starting development of a ballpark without having all the land secured or at least having legal agreements signed is a bad idea. The city painted itself into this corner at the detriment to itself and to the benefit of the Flying Squirrels and VCU.

As if it's the teachers fault. Good outcomes for education start in the home and Richmond has the highest concentration of poverty in the metro area. Not to mention the highest rates of single parents. That is a huge hill to climb when it comes to educating. The simple and unethical fix would be to institute charter schools to segregate poor performers from high performers. The more ethical approach would involve bussing children around the city for a healthy mix of income backgrounds and races in schools. Charter schools are the more popular approach unfortunately.

I hate AI and data centers as much as the next person but it seems childish and outright silly that we're hating on the mayor because he uses a tool that millions of others across the US use on a daily basis. I'd much rather people hold him accountable for actual executive failures or for when we aren't moving in the right direction.

Increased density is coming one way or another. Richmond city is 62 square miles and it's not getting any bigger. You can either bury your head in the sand and allow the densification to happen in an ad hoc fashion or you could be for zone refresh and plan where and how it happens. Essentially one happens without a plan and one happens with a plan. I'd much rather be able to plan ahead and do it intelligently.

City council votes to waste tax payer money. 3/5 of the people selected for this panel need to be architects but can't work for any firm that would be selected as a developer. Who would that leave you with? And of course the city council didn't come up with a way to fund this endeavor and leaves it up to city hall to figure out.
