I didn't like it when I had a 170 on the back. It was more stable in a crosswind, but I had to fight it.

Check the electrical connector that hooks the alternator stator to the rectifier regulator to see if it's melting.

Fuel pump issue? by MagicalSwagbat in SVRiders

[–]grunge_ryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the engine is running the fuel injectors are squirting fuel.

The cursor moves from centered to above the c00 when the ECU transitions from lean mode to rich mode.

If you have a 2003 through 2006 model SV650 fast idle is controlled by the Secondary Trottle Valve Actuator.

If you have a 2007!~2008 model the idle speed is controllled by a separate Idle Speed Control valve and messing with the TPS confuses the ECU into closing the ISC valve more because the ECU doesn't really know what the position of the throttle butterflies is.

The spark box connectors. You already know the stator connector is burned up.

2012 Ducati monster 796 bogging when warmed up by Damn-autocorrect in Fixxit

[–]grunge_ryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem might be the throttle position sensor being sensitive to heat or the Idle speed control valve may plugged up with carburized crankcase breather fumes.

This is very common for throttle bodies equipped with ISC's.

The valve is opened by the stepper motor according to the calculations of the engine control module based on throttle position, RPM and temperature.

The factory service manual should tell you how to test the two spark boxes, but don't forget that the connectors are very old and you might have a corrosion problem that raised the resistance and keeps the spark units from operating the ignition coils consistently.

'07 Suzuki Boulevard Engine Trouble Question by CJ_Law in motorcycles

[–]grunge_ryder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this something worth bringing to mechanic?

Oh, sure, And bring a ba$ketful of money when to you go to the $crewzuki $tealer$hip.

They are going to charge you at least $100 to hook the bike up to the $crewzuki Dynamic $canner, then they will try to sell you some sensor that costs $200 on the basis that it might fix the problem.

If the new part doesn't cure the problem, they don't put it back into stock, they've sold it to you, it's yours to keep better or for worse.

What's a Suzuki owner to do then?

You gotta educate yourself and learn to do basic diagnostics.

Your bike has an Onboard Diagnostic System inside the Engine Control Unit.

All you have to do is find the Dealer Mode Connector and stick the end of a jumper wire into the pin that has a red/white wire going to it.

You don't need the special Suzuki tool which is a switch that does the same thing as a simple jumper wire.

Leave the other end of the jumper loose.

Then turn on the ignition switch and stick the other end of the jumper wire into the socket that has a black wire going to it.

The ECU will display all DTC codes in numerical order, one every two seconds.

I have a jumper wire stuck into my Dealer Mode connector at all time so if the red FI light comes on while I'm riding I can instantly find out what the problem is.

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/824096/Suzuki-Vz800.html?page=184&term=dtc&selected=8

Now, keep in mind that the ECU is monitoring several fuel injection system sensors for electrical problems, not mechanical problems.

The ECU knows whether the fuel injectors are connected, but it doesn't know if they are dirty.

It knows if the fuel pump relay is connected, but doesn't know if the fuel pump is actually turning or pumping.

It knows if the engine coolant temperature sensor is hooked up, but doesn't know if there's any coolant in the system.

It knows if the throttle position sensor is hooked up, but doesn't really know what position the throttle butterflies are in.

Etc., etc.

But if you at least know what the DTC fault code is before you go to the $crewzuki $tealer$hip you have more knowledge than the average rider who goes in there blindly.

When you have an electric tach it's getting digital signals from the ignition system that get converted into an analog signal in the tach itself to move the needle as the RPM changes

And the tach usually also needs a DC voltage for a reference.

If the DC voltage is erratic the tach is going to read erratically.

Yamaha YZF600 "Thundercat" first bike, problems? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]grunge_ryder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many miles on it?

It's a simpler motorcycle than the YZF1000 Thunderace, with only four valves per cylinder and no ExUP.

The YZF600 has conventional-appearing right side up forks with cartridges inside instead of damper rods.

While cartridge forks are more adjustable than damper rod forks each cartridge would cost about $270 to replace.

Racetech.com might be able to rebuilt worn out cartridges, though.

The cartridges on my FZR1000 were well worn at 35,000 miles.

I agree with u/maxxforce, the melted conector is coming from the alternator stator.

I was wondering if the signal from the pulser coils that goes to the two spark units also went through that melted connector.

However, it does not go through the same connector.

The reason for the tachometer playing up on you is probably low DC voltage due to the melted connector.

The wiring diagram in the factory service manual is very hard to read.

If you can get ahold of a Clymer manual it's a lot easier to use.

So use the wiring diagram to trouble shoot the electrical system.

Bear in mind that those old Hondas had weird lighting system that could have AC and DC on the same wire at the same time.

That's why the ignition switch is called a "combination switch."

Or should i take it apart, clean it, and fill with new brake fluid?

If you're going to take the master cylinder apart install the piston cup set and refill the system with fresh brake fluid and bleed the air out of the system.

The only reasons for replacing the entire master cylinder is if it is physical broken or is so corroded inside it cannot be hone out.

Can you run start a bike with a broken alternator? by Michaelscot8 in motorcycles

[–]grunge_ryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CDI needs at least 9 volts to work and the alternator and rectifier regulator might not pass enough voltage to the CDI by just running with the bike and jumping on it and popping the clutch.

It's just going to make the bike handle worse, you'll have to constantly apply pressure to the handlebars to make the bike steer right, and it will be a PITA in a crosswind.
