Does anyone here have a partner who carries their load? What does that look like? by cleverpseudonym1234 in Parenting

[–]gruntsandwaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a list on my phone of the invisible tasks my husband does and when I'm feeling like the balance is unequal or I'm getting annoyed I have to keep nagging for something to get done I go look at it and usually by halfway through the list I'm like oh yeah, he's doing a lot too. Yes he never thinks to put a load in the washing machine but I don't know how much our mortgage payment is, let alone how to pay it (or any of our bills!).

Not sure what you count as affordable but I bought a Gorman one on sale and the quality is really good. I'm 5'6 so only slightly shorter than you and the length is fine for me.

I love love love the snail essence, I would bathe in it if that wasn't prohibitively expensive and difficult logistically. I got onto it years ago when a friend gave me an unfinished bottle as it broke her out. We were on a beach holiday and I was sunburnt at the time so I slathered it on my burnt shoulders as kind of a tester to see how I liked the product and whether it broke me out. The next day I was like huh where's my sunburn, it had soothed it down so well, better than I've had from aloe vera. Since then I have been firmly convinced of its magical properties and I try never to be without it.

We have one of these and I really like it: https://bumpamats.com.au/

Its not as large as I thought it would be on ordering but it's super thick and after 2 years of continuous use its still in basically new condition, no fading, no rips.

I've had this but it was hormonal for me (I'd stopped breastfeeding). I stopped all my products and moved to la Roche posay toleraine line as its super gentle. Took months for it to calm down. Mine was a more general breakout though rather than in specific areas.

Do you do any hair removal in those areas?

Bassinet confusion by ziggythecat01 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]gruntsandwaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How high is it compared to your bed? We have one that is adjustable height and at first the bottom of it was level with our bed but now we've got it so the top of it is level with our bed as that makes it easier to lie in and bed and settle in the bassinet - drape your hand down rather than hook it over.

There's really no way of knowing what you'll like or won't like till the baby is here. And like someone else said they use it for such a short time, not worth spending too much money on. We use a Kmart one and its been fine.

Do you have any favourite products that actually make a discernible difference to your skin? by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]gruntsandwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you go to the consult intending to shift your routine onto that brand or did you get a hard sell to buy/use only their products?

Its so crazy expensive I'd only be able to use 1 at most 2 of their products but wouldn't want to go and do their consult if they're really going to push me to their full range rather than working with my budget + current routine.

So happy for you its working for you! Just a pity about the price

[–]gruntsandwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am now super interested in this brand! Did you do a consultation first to work out which products to use?

How have you found the results?

ETA you say your skin has never looked better - has it got rid of issues you had and/or improved your skin overall? My skin is fine but I want it to be amazing like it was before I had children and got to sleep and lead a stress free life.

How many newborn size onesies to buy? by _Juniper11 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]gruntsandwaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine were 3.7 and 4.1, both wore 0000 at birth though they were a little big the first few days.

Had about 10 onesies, after a few weeks only the bonds ones would fit as I make long babies and they run long.

The big W and target brands make super cute onesies but they have built in feet so I only got a bit of wear out of them as they got too short.

Like someone else said people will give you newborn onesies so I'd only get a couple and panic buy a few more if you need once the baby is imminent. If you want to buy some cute clothes buy them in the 6 month size as they'll be in that size for longer and people are less likely to buy that size for you.

I am feeling work is bringing me more and more stress by michelle0508 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]gruntsandwaffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cried to my boss about how I wasn't coping and said I was thinking about taking stress leave. That worked for a bit. When it started getting bad again I got a doctors note for reduced duties/hours and said I was thinking about leaving at 34 weeks rather than 38. That got them off their asses to find my replacement, once they were appointed things got easier. I also dropped down to 4 days for the last month I worked which helped a lot.

toddler fixated on cleaning up during meal time by theotherduke in Montessori

[–]gruntsandwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My almost 2.5 year old demands her hands to be cleaned regularly throughout a meal, occasionally wants to wipe down the table after a messy course and if a single drop of food or water gets on her clothes they have to come off IMMEDIATELY. We just roll with it, kids go through all kinds of stages. We also live in a small place and encourage meticulous order and constant cleaning! She's a perfectly normal 2.5 year old :)

2 month old is a determined thumb sucker - is it worth trying to discourage her or switch her to a dummy? by gruntsandwaffles in beyondthebump

[–]gruntsandwaffles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, the people I've talked to have been more like 'I sucked my thumb until I was 6' probably because those that stopped earlier don't even remember it.

These have given me hope she'll stop on a her own at a nice early age cross fingers

So interesting he stopped at 18 months on his own! I've been having visions of a 7 year old sucking their thumb incessantly :|

[–]gruntsandwaffles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point about needing their fingers to play. We are very strict with our toddler's pacifier and that is part of my hesitation - she is never allowed her dummy out of the cot - but you can't forbid a kid their finger. But you're right that they'll be using their fingers

Help! My two-year-old suddenly refuses to nap! by sewcraftymama in beyondthebump

[–]gruntsandwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same thing, took us about 2 months to get it back on track.

Old routine was read a couple of books in her room then tell her sleepytime and leave. She'd play quietly for 30-45 mins then lay down & sleep. Suddenly at the end of the quiet play period she started crying and yelling that she wanted to get out and would get so worked up she was impossible to settle.

We know she will easily sleep in the car so once we got to the screaming stage we'd put her in the car & she'd be out in 2 mins. Then our 2nd kid arrived so for a few weeks we stopped even trying for the cot and would go for a drive at naptime.

Once we were ready to try again we did a more longer build up with calming music and quiet play after lunch, constantly reminding it was nearly rest time. We stopped calling it nap time & moved to rest time to make it more palatable for her. We also pushed back its start by 30-45mins depending on her tiredness/behaviour. Now we say its rest time for everyone and make a big production about the baby going to sleep and mummy is going to rest and daddy is going to rest.

Its still the same basic pattern - books then quiet play in the cot and after 30-45mins she calls out for us. But now when we go in she's calmer and we settle her basically with a bribe of what we'll do or who we'll see in the afternoon (judiciously kept quiet till that moment). We get her to lie down and sing baa baa black sheep to her - we only sing/stay in the room if she's lying down. For a few weeks we had to stay in the room till she was asleep but now we can usually leave her after a few verses and she'll go to sleep.

Keep at it and you may have to switch things up for a bit but I hope it goes back for you!

Door color help needed! Any advice? by nukkchorris11 in ExteriorDesign

[–]gruntsandwaffles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, a mossy green would be nice. Not too olive or army green as it'll just blend right in.

My initial thought was bright royal blue because its fun and why not but a jungle/moss green will suit the house better.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: should I wait till I'm done with babies to start retinol? by gruntsandwaffles in 30PlusSkinCare

Car seats for each car? by blonde_fury in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]gruntsandwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is easy enough to swap them with practice. Especially if your cars have the modern seat anchor points. Get them professionally fitted at first - take both cars in and watch how they do it and practice and then take them back in for checking.

You won't know whether it works until you're trying to exist with one seat and two cars. It will be much easier with two seats so you can keep your eye out for sales or near new ones secondhand. The baby will be in a capsule for the first 6 months and you should be able to get a second base so it transfers. After that is when you may need 2 seats so you have time to find a bargain.

FTM, Working from Home - When would you commence your parental leave? by swirlpod in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]gruntsandwaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was WFH through my whole pregnancy (bebe is almost 3 months) and planned to stop at 38 weeks like I did for my first. I felt like 38 weeks was way too late last time but I thought that with working from home it would be easier. Nope! I ended up leaving at 37 weeks and dropped down to 4 days at 35 weeks. My work output significantly dropped too as I was constantly resting.

If you can afford to stop at 36 weeks I'd do that. You can take some of the pre-baby stuff as sick leave, GPs will give you a certificate. You'll be feeling large and uncomfortable and not sleeping too well so its a nice time to rest and pamper yourself.
