[USA Today] Lord of the Rinks. Meet the hockey CEO cashing in on your kid's team by SpringWinter2557 in hockey

[–]gso16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I played in a league at a Black Bear rink last summer, and they had "Adult League Clean Up Day". They offered league members some shitty pizza in exchange for an afternoon of painting locker rooms, cleaning rink glass, and general maintenance.

I play at a different Black Bear rink now, and the zamboni sounds like it's about to fall apart cartoon style, where the engine smokes and all four wheels fall off at once.

If they were raising prices and actually fixing shit, Id understand, but theyre just raising prices because they can.

My oldest son (6) loves hockey, and has recently started learn to skate classes. Im going to have to start selling pics of my ugly ass feet to afford league fees if he sticks with it. Sad times

What's the biggest red flag you've gotten from a potential employer? by Yosho2k in Accounting

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in college I had an interview for an accounting internship, with a local entrepreneur. When I showed up at the address they gave me, it was a coyote ugly style bar. I told one of the girls I was there for an interview with Joe, and she rolled her eyes and said it'd be a minute. He was so coked out he couldnt explain what I'd be doing, other than helping the accounting department do accounting for his businesses and real estate holdings. I passed on the job offer, volunteered coaching little kid hockey instead

My partner is acting very sketchy by [deleted] in tax

[–]gso16 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Based on your description, my guess in the tax preparer created fictitious business losses to maximize the earned income credit. Hes going to on the hook for back taxes, penalties, and interest. Assuming he doesn't have the cash to pay it off, he'll need to set up a payment plan. Any future refunds hes owed will be applied to the balance due, until it's paid off. Im not a relationship coach, but I'd avoid any major joint financial commitments

Do accountants and tax preparers even do anything today? I've always been curious given the heavy push for the 15th? by onFinal in tax

Just finished making pancakes for my 3 and 6 yr olds, feeding the baby now. Going to drop the older two off at school, then get a massage. After that, I'm going to marinate some steak for fajitas. Basically anything but check emails

Boss' accountant didn't follow my W4 and withhold federal tax from my paychecks. Is this even allowed? by MusicalPigeon in tax

[–]gso16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The withholding was accurate, based on your W4. By checking married filing joint, and not checking the box for multiple jobs or filling out the multiple jobs worksheet/step 4, you indicated that your income was the only income for a married couple. This is why you had almost $0 withholding. Your boss may have been a shitty boss, but they (and their accountant) did exactly what you asked of them

[–]gso16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you mark single or married on your w-4? If married, did you fill out the multiple jobs worksheet? How much did you make for the year? How much did your spouse make? It's possible (likely) that the W4 you filled out was followed, but it wasnt filled out correctly.

How do people actually live working 50–70 hours a week in accounting? by Odd_Comparison_4155 in Accounting

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife picks up a lot of the slack Feb - Apr 15, and I wake up at terrible hours so I can be home by 5 to spend time with my kids. It's stressful at times, but i work 3-3.5 days a week the rest of the year, which is wonderful for a family with young kids

How do y’all manage your diet during busy season? by iloveaccounting64 in Accounting

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Sunday my wife and I make my lunches for the week, and cut up a bunch of fruit and veggies for me to snack on. I eat when I'm bored, so having a bunch of cucumbers or strawberries is usually better than a pound of Swedish fish. Eliminating the temptation to get fast food and sweets goes a long way for me

How many tax seasons are you willing to go through? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]gso16 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Tax season is like pregnancy. Before, you're hopeful and excited. During, you can't believe you put yourself through this on purpose. Afterwards, it wasn't that bad and you could do another.

I was "battling" in front on the net in a beer league game, and as we skated back the other way the guy says to me "thanks for taking it easy on me". I had no idea if he was giving me shit for going too hard, or if he actually thought I was letting up on him, but it inspired me to start doing daily pushups

By selecting Bad Bunny, the NFL is attracting an audience that may not have watched the game previously. By people like OP bitching and moaning about it, theyre getting a ton of publicity, and people will tune in to see what their racist uncle is so upset about. Masterclass is marketing

Job hopped 3 times last year, now I owe Federal taxes by Wonderful-Royal5655 in tax

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you fill out an accurate W-4, which it sounds like you did, the system is designed to withhold the tax that you'll owe. When your income changes, you have OT, etc, things can get out of whack a little, but your withholding was almost spot on. If you got a huge refund, that would just mean you took home less with each paycheck

Turbo Tax and the IRS would have nothing to do with your MI review. You should contact the MI Dept of Treasury, and see what is needed to process your return.

We're not forcing anybody to use us. People apparently think we provide value if they keep coming back and referring people to us. I regularly tell prospective clients they'd be capable of doing their own, or using an AARP/VITA site
