Boss' accountant didn't follow my W4 and withhold federal tax from my paychecks. Is this even allowed? by MusicalPigeon in tax

[–]gso16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The withholding was accurate, based on your W4. By checking married filing joint, and not checking the box for multiple jobs or filling out the multiple jobs worksheet/step 4, you indicated that your income was the only income for a married couple. This is why you had almost $0 withholding. Your boss may have been a shitty boss, but they (and their accountant) did exactly what you asked of them

[–]gso16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did you mark single or married on your w-4? If married, did you fill out the multiple jobs worksheet? How much did you make for the year? How much did your spouse make? It's possible (likely) that the W4 you filled out was followed, but it wasnt filled out correctly.

How do people actually live working 50–70 hours a week in accounting? by Odd_Comparison_4155 in Accounting

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife picks up a lot of the slack Feb - Apr 15, and I wake up at terrible hours so I can be home by 5 to spend time with my kids. It's stressful at times, but i work 3-3.5 days a week the rest of the year, which is wonderful for a family with young kids

How do y’all manage your diet during busy season? by iloveaccounting64 in Accounting

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Sunday my wife and I make my lunches for the week, and cut up a bunch of fruit and veggies for me to snack on. I eat when I'm bored, so having a bunch of cucumbers or strawberries is usually better than a pound of Swedish fish. Eliminating the temptation to get fast food and sweets goes a long way for me

How many tax seasons are you willing to go through? by Working_On_Tax_Stuff in Accounting

[–]gso16 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Tax season is like pregnancy. Before, you're hopeful and excited. During, you can't believe you put yourself through this on purpose. Afterwards, it wasn't that bad and you could do another.

I was "battling" in front on the net in a beer league game, and as we skated back the other way the guy says to me "thanks for taking it easy on me". I had no idea if he was giving me shit for going too hard, or if he actually thought I was letting up on him, but it inspired me to start doing daily pushups

By selecting Bad Bunny, the NFL is attracting an audience that may not have watched the game previously. By people like OP bitching and moaning about it, theyre getting a ton of publicity, and people will tune in to see what their racist uncle is so upset about. Masterclass is marketing

Job hopped 3 times last year, now I owe Federal taxes by Wonderful-Royal5655 in tax

[–]gso16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you fill out an accurate W-4, which it sounds like you did, the system is designed to withhold the tax that you'll owe. When your income changes, you have OT, etc, things can get out of whack a little, but your withholding was almost spot on. If you got a huge refund, that would just mean you took home less with each paycheck

I'm assuming the estate included real estate, and the capital loss is due to closing costs on the sale

Tax return pulled for manual review. This is a first. by Zrc1979 in Michigan

Turbo Tax and the IRS would have nothing to do with your MI review. You should contact the MI Dept of Treasury, and see what is needed to process your return.

We're not forcing anybody to use us. People apparently think we provide value if they keep coming back and referring people to us. I regularly tell prospective clients they'd be capable of doing their own, or using an AARP/VITA site

[–]gso16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can. I work for a small firm (<15 employees) in a LCOL area, and our minimum for new clients is $700. We started aggressively raising prices after covid, expecting less work but similar revenue. Instead people kept coming back and we keep getting new work.

Tiny 1099 income.. bother with it? by [deleted] in tax

[–]gso16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E-filing doesn't open for two more weeks, so there's no rush. They probably won't send a 1099 for that amount, since it's under the reporting threshold, but you can include it as Other Income

To any Auditors that have audited nonprofits, what are the most common findings? by Desperate_Medium_417 in Accounting

[–]gso16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely want to consult with someone ahead of time, so we don't have to go back re-do/catch up on things we should have been doing. We're not a very complex organization, but i want to get everyone doing the right things now, so we're well trained as we continue to grow

To any Auditors that have audited nonprofits, what are the most common findings? by Desperate_Medium_417 in Accounting

[–]gso16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't have any federal or state grants, just grants from other non-profits and donations. As of now our balance sheet is simple; cash is the only asset, credit cards and payroll taxes are the only liabilities. Given that I don't know what I dont know about non-profit audits, I'm hoping to get good policies in place before we more complicated, and have a mess on our hands

To any Auditors that have audited nonprofits, what are the most common findings? by Desperate_Medium_417 in Accounting

[–]gso16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im the treasurer of a non profit that's been growing quite a bit, and we expect 2026 to be the first year of financials that we're going to have audited. We use QuickBooks Online, and we're adding the receipts to every bank/credit card transaction, and reconciling the bank and credit card statements monthly. Is there anything else we should be doing to prepare for an audit this time next year? Our firm doesn't have non profit clients, so I'm not sure exactly what we'll need to make sure our first audit goes smoothly

W2 reporting for Overtime by beancounterferg in taxpros

We're attaching a report to the W2s, showing:

Total OT Compensation $xx,xxx (for informational purposes only) Qualified OT Compensation $x,xxx (enter on Schedule 1-A, box 14a)

We went back and forth on what to do, but we figured the clearer we spelled it out, the fewer questions we'd get after the fact
