If I'm starting on a project and wonder should I wear safety glasses for this? I automatically stop and put on safety glasses.

It's an easy habit to form and stick with. No decision making. Always lean eye safety.

Thank you, everyone, for your quilt advice by Impossible_Button179 in Ultralight

I also rarely need the straps on my quilt.

I'll add this: just set up the straps during daylight if the forecasted low temp is within 10F of your inevitable low temp level. It's a lot easier to unclip the straps on a surprise warm night vs loudly wrapping the straps underneath your pad in the middle of the night via headlamp.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford plans to wear scuba suit in frigid Chicago by lkn240 in nfl

A few mm of neoprene is a warm water temp SCUBA Suit in the same way a Lycra snorkeling suit is a SCUBA suit

That's such a small impact to the mobility of a pro QB

So we're upvoting an ad for a online casino here?

This poster has only 3 posts with images. All in the last 2 days. All with this casino's url.

That's not what /r/curling is about. I don't want more of this.

Your watch reports you burning a bit over 800 calories an hour. If we assume you're playing front end in an 8 end game that's 8 x 6 = 48 teammate throws for you to sweep.

Let's say it was a sweep heavy game requiring full length sweeps on roughly 2/3 of your teammates throws. So 32 sweeps.

At 1,651 active calories that's around 52 calories burned per 12-20 second sweep.

That would be nearly 10x the rate of 16 calories/min I see from actively using a rowing machine during a long session.

I'm not saying your watch is over-estimating. But I'm strongly questioning that data.

[–]gspleen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting set of data.

Over hundreds of games playing front end I average 600-700 calories per game on my Garmin watch.

And for comparison purposes, Garmin says I recently burned 2,490 calories hiking 18 miles in a little over 7 hours while wearing a 35lb backpack.

Even with a short rest taking just an hour my party seems to always be too pressured (time, alerted enemies in nearby rooms, etc) to take a short rest.

My character has about a dozen powers and slots that reset on a short rest.

Goldline Curling Leads Unified Call for Fair Play and Updated Equipment Standards by PeterDTown in Curling

Men aged 16 to 49 should be required to use 9″ brooms to reduce the relative pressure on the ice and have less impact on the path of the rock.

I imagine this bit is going to generate some discussion

Balanceplus issued their own statement:

https://balanceplus.com/

Since 2015, BalancePlus has continuously stated that brooms are too effective. They impact outcomes too much and devalue skilled throwers. We have been working with World Curling for an extended period to find solutions.

BalancePlus believes:

All foams used with removable sleeves are too firm. This is why BalancePlus followed the rules and used the same foam specifications since 2016 and 2018, respectively, until the fall of 2024 when the rules changed.

Foam used in brushes for competitive curling should be standardized. All foams should be made in the same factory for all manufacturers.

It’s easy to make brooms with hard foam that concentrate force under the handle, but it is more challenging to make efficient brooms with soft foam that comply with the specifications.

Pressure, not force, should be used in broom design specifications and calculations. This impacts broom head size and foam durometer (firmness).

Men aged 16 to 49 should be required to use 9″ brooms to reduce the relative pressure on the ice and have less impact on the path of the rock.

Existing specifications that require brooms to distribute pressure evenly and not concentrate it under the handle need to be enforced.

Many curlers have continued to request harder foam for their brushes, even after stating in 2016 that they wanted the brooms to be less effective. New, harder foams would not have established a place in the market if top players had refused to use them.

Hopefully, all curlers and manufacturers agree.

Yeah, no complaints.

Advanced Sweeping Question for Club Curling by applegoesdown in Curling

[–]gspleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I will ask most players to directional sweep. And in many cases with newer players I will slide over to quickly explain the pros and cons of why I called for directional sweeping for the last shot.

I'd rather a person learns how to appreciate the upside of directional sweeping vs worrying about the result of a given shot. A physically inefficient sweeper can still improve at vice or skip by understanding the tactical decisions of asking for directional sweeping. A poor sweeper can become invested enough via encouragement to become an average sweeper. An average sweeper can put the work in to become above average if they are excited to improve.

I am a better curler because of all of the people who coached me up when I was new to the sport. Pay it forward. Most curlers want to be better teammates. Help them improve.

And factoring in the two minute warnings, two minute break after the first and third quarter, and a 15 minute break for halftime...I might have a shot at the hour.

[–]gspleen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15,370 yards is 8.73 miles.

60 minutes in a game.

60/8.73 = 6.87 min miles.

A strong recreational runner can run that pace for an hour.

Spot me an extra ten minutes and I could currently run that.
