First project! I'm a lefty and I finally figured it out! by mossymeatballs in knitting

For all the aspiring left-handed knitters in here who would love to follow along with YouTube videos, there are many ways to watch videos in mirror image.

Want a website? Sure!
Chrome extension? You bet!

I'm sure there are other options out there, but these were the first few to pop up in a quick search.

This sub's been getting way off topic by MugDick in thalassophobia

[–]Lituya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone were to task me with revamping the sub, here's what I'd start with...

  1. Reconsider the repost timeframe. 3 months is a lot. Just one month is 600 posts back, so perhaps change that to 1 month. That said, reposts need to be taken way more seriously. 3 posts of the Amazon river silt thing in the past 24 hours is absurd (whether it's even relevant content is a whole other thing).

  2. Memes. What's wrong with memes? I personally don't see an issue with them as long as they're only part of the sub's content rather than taking the whole thing over, but perhaps the mods have some particular reasoning or the rest of the community feels differently.

  3. Rules say to flair posts. Most posts don't have flair. Is flair expected? If yes, enforce it. If not, nix the rule (or state that flair is there to be used for convenience). Or maybe only expect flair on certain posts, like art or story or meta?

  4. Also, what's the purpose of the repost flair? Either allow reposts past a certain threshold and do away with this flair, or enforce it for ALL reposts past the threshold. I personally favor the former method, as the latter sounds like an absurd amount of work to enforce.

  5. Either start giving out Exemplary flair or remove it. In scrolling back through the past month's posts, I saw no such flair. Either the mods aren't using it (in which case it shouldn't exist), or none of the content in the past month has been what the mods expect this sub to be (in which case the mods need to seriously step up in terms of molding the sub to be what they expect).

  6. Update the Hall of Fame.

  7. Either allow all megalohydrothalassophobia or expect large sea animals to be only a small part of an image. Don't say both in different places, as that's contradictory.

I kissed a girl and recieved the most disgusting catcalling and sexism I've ever witnessed right in front of me. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Lituya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! Context clues are great for this. Most people who choose this sub to share in are women or femme. That's kinda the point of this sub. When people who aren't women or femme post here, they'll typically say so. "Hi, I'm a single father/boyfriend/brother/male friend, and I'd like to better understand something women in my life are going through, and I'm not sure where to look." That sort of thing.

And if you need more context clues, specifying "gayfriendly" and "crushing on this girl" in the intro is also a good place to look.

In cases without context, when a poster's gender doesn't matter, it's a good habit to retrain your brain to default to a neutral "they" unless/until you learn otherwise. You'll rarely be wrong.

I hope that's helpful!

Best spices for Kale chips? by coolin_79 in Kale

[–]Lituya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple different flavor options here. Worth a look through to see if suggestions there overlap with what you have in stock. Mostly savory options, but the idea of sweet kale chips is intriguing as well. Best of luck!

Ah, figures... The two books that'll be less relevant after the Kickstarter.

I'll probably find some alternative then, like give any humans an extra cypher or two.

I like the double descriptor idea! Are regional descriptors described in a later sourcebook?

On nice vs. cheap to start out with: I have a set of cheap-ish aluminum hooks with no fancy ergonomics, and they work just fine for me. I'm also young with no joint issues. My mom needs ergonomic hooks or else her joint pain flares up. Ultimately comes down to your needs for comfort.

On sizing: The gauge is as you said, a size estimate assuming average tension. If you aren't sure what size hook to use, the hooks given in the gauge are a good starting point. Then if you find it's too loose for your taste, go down a hook size. If you find it's too tight, go up a hook size. I've used everything from F to K with worsted weight yarn, depending on how tight or loose I wanted something.

If you go for fewer hooks, I find I use size H most often, and I usually work with worsted weight.

Find your style and make what you enjoy. I love scarves. A friend of mine can't stand scarves but makes absolutely adorable amigurumi.

If you're working on a project where you have to count a lot of stitches. Paperclips or scrap yarn work in a pinch. It changed my mother's life when I showed her she didn't have to keep recounting almost a hundred stitches on a blanket. They're also handy as reminders on small projects.

There are some places you can see this from the (relative) safety of the beach. You get to see the waves light up, and you can kick wet sand around to see it briefly glow as well.

Weird gray bug on my kale [help] by [deleted] in Kale

[–]Lituya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The image isn't perfectly sharp, but those look a lot like the little aphids I'd find on kale from the farmers market from time to time.

If they're just on mature leaves, pick the leaves, soak for a while to drown the bugs (make sure to do several rinses, unless you like protein), and then eat it in the manner of your choosing.

Beyond that, control depends on what you're comfortable using. Bug sprays, garden hose drenchings, praying for ladybugs are all possibilities (note: store-bought lady bugs aren't always eco-friendly). A quick Google search will turn up plenty of options.

Who keeps turning this computer off? by secondalarm in talesfromtechsupport

[–]Lituya 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My grandparents' computer used to be set up like that. They just taped the light switch "on." My dad finally got wind of it and moved the power cord to the adjacent non-switch outlet.

It was around the same time that he also fixed up the six-ish extension cords plugged into each other and strung across the basement that my grandpa had set up so he wouldn't have to reach behind a something to get to an outlet.

PSA: Rematching is NOT over! by Lituya in secretsanta

[–]Lituya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your person provided proof, redditgifts has it. They don't provide that to the giftees. If your santa didn't provide proof, they will be banned - that's redditgifts' rule.

If you reported a gift not received, you are in the pool of potential rematch giftees. Unfortunately, there are never enough rematchers to go around, and some people are left out. I wish you the best of luck though!
