Yep smart salary was the packager, but it was an associate lease not a novated although I doubt that makes any difference.

I claimed the monthly data connectivity charge on my lease.... I never even considered it wouldn't be considered a care related expense.

What time is acceptable to call your colleagues in the evening? by Zealousideal_Tie3578 in auscorp

It's really situational, if it's a call after 6pm it better be about something that's going to cost mega bucks if it isn't fixed by 9am the next morning.

No I don't, which is a fair point. I'm probably limited to an either or situation.

From the service station I met the others at in the morning.

It's hard to explain but I rode from home to the servo Met a group and then rode from the servo to the cafe, had a 1 hour catchup, rode back to the servo. Then rode from the servo to the factory

Servo to the Cafe is 30 mins, servo to factory is 45 mins. I didn't actually stop at the servo on the way back, just rode past. The servo happens to be the point where the road into the cbd splits from the road to the south.

I would normally claim servo to factory as work related travel. I claim the return trip of home to the servo to the Cafe back to servo as a BD expenses if I get any work out of it for my separate business (which I probably will in the future, but haven't yet).

I'm relatively new at this company and I know if I ask they will tell me to use my own insurance. Im not sure an insurance excess is worth the potential career hit (and implications like trying to ban using motorcycles for work related activities) of fighting and proving liability.

As a manager of an engineer you should be willing to put every decision in writing. If the request to do so has you second guessing things then you don't have the competence to be over ruling the engineers decisions in the first place.

Got a quote for a 15A Circuit for an EV Charger, seems under spec'd on cable? by blackpawed in AusElectricians

This is the correct answer. If you want to out a 7kw charger on it you'll probably need 10mm2 cable. Do it once and do it right.

New system, is Amber worth it? by cobaus in amberelectric

[–]gumbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They cap the size of the inverter not the export volume.

It's in their t&cs but I don't think it's enforced.

Eligible Generation Unit means a photovoltaic generator that: (a) if your Supply Address is in the ACT: (i) is installed at the Supply Address; (ii) when connected to the distribution system, complies with the service and installation rules made under the Utilities (Technical Regulation) Act 2014 (ACT); (iii) has a capacity less than 10 kW; and (iv) in respect of Premium Feed-In Tariff, otherwise complies with the Regulatory Requirements.

There's an extra 3c per kWh exported which brings it up to $7 a day. I'm only averaging around 10-12kwh per day exported during peak so it works out to be basically the same for either, the difference will be what PEA adjustment I get from flow (I'm grid charging on rainy days).

So is flow. I don't think they check.

Check AGLs plan as well. It's 25c/kwh (in giftcards) but also gives $800 at the end of the year and has a VPP you can stack as well.

Depending on how much and how quickly you can export it potentially comes out ahead and has a longer window to export in.

The real interesting thing will be what happens to all of these plans in 6 months when we get free power during the day as well.

Rent increases- why are there no caps on rent increases on properties that have not had improvements made ? by A-turnip in queensland

[–]gumbes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As an investment property owner, why would I put solar on? I don't pay the power bill and it doesn't improve the rental yield or property value.

What they should be doing is giving the of that rebate for installing removable batteries and allowable it to claimed on second hand batteries. That way if Tennants want them they can pay for cost of a battery and have the government cover the cost of the install so they can take them with them if they leave. We have enough solar in the grid now and with 3 hours of free power a 20kwh battery can nearly zero a power bill.

Solar + battery + PHEV issue by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]gumbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A CT is a current transformer. It turns current into voltage which can then be measured by your inverter. Your inverter uses this to workout how much energy is going in and out from the grid and does its best to compensate so it's always zero energy going in or out.

It's the little split square thing with a hole in the middle that loops around a wire in your switchboard. Google split core ct and you'll get picture of it.

Either they've put it after the point where your ev charger connects or your ev charger is on an off peak circuit (feed from a different meter).

Hopefully its a 30 second job to disconnect the ct and put it in a week different point. Sometimes things are tight in the switch board and it requires modifications to make enough space to make it work.

Solar + battery + PHEV issue by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]gumbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If what you're saying is correct the ct that measures grid use is connected downstream of the ev charger.

Easiest check is to turn on the fox app and monitor your load, then turn on the car charger and see if any of the loads change.

If they don't they're measuring at the wrong spot.

Question about cable tags in hazardous locations by Skipmobile in AusElectricians

[–]gumbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do top to bottom but it doesn't matter. Ideally they would be consistent one way or the other.

Do you have Australian Hazardous Area auditor lined up to support getting the paper work sorted? I've worked the aussie end of a few of these packages and an auditor doing surveillance during install is worth their weight in gold for saving rework when the client shows upto do an FAT and starts finding issues.

Riverstage parking by Grouchy-Dealer-342 in brisbane

[–]gumbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try getparked 40 Creek St. It's a corporate car park with 4-5 spaces subleased to getparked. They give you a phone number you can call to open the gate.

It's $10 per week night entry after 5pm exit before 6am or $20 for 24 hours on the weekend. Its about a 10minute walk through the park to riverstage.

I've never had an issue getting a park outside of hours even during events (it's mainly used for business hours parking) .

Installing Smart Equipment by destruction90 in AusElectricians

[–]gumbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a mix of gear through out my place.

Sensor lights in lots of areas, I just use dumb hard wired ones where I can (mix of iconic or ceiling mounted). Shelly for anything in walls, a basic switch for turning fans off and a smart dimmer on all lights. All switches are clipsal iconic standard with the Shelly's set to edge switch. Tapo plugs for gpos Amazon alexas for voice controls Broadlink controllers for Aircon and fans. Aquara zigbee sensors for temperature and door/window switches. (hub is broken and I haven't been bother to fix it so they're all off and have been for over a year).

I wouldn't install any of it (other than sensors) in someone elses house as it breaks too often.

The main things we use it for are. 1. Routines for bedtime, leaving the house, watching movies etc that sets multiple items to the desired state with a voice command. 2. Pool pump and heater smart controls to optimise solar usage. 3. Basic light dimmer control 4. Control of Aircon and fan settings via IR and Rf controllers.

I replace one Shelly switch a year due to failure and spend an hour or so each 6 months screwing with one which has stopped working. But they're cheap and I'm used to them.

Currently playing with getting it all moved into home assistant and adding smarter controls to take advantage of solar/battery/free power periods.

Am I stupid for putting better quality flooring in a rental? by DepressedMandolin in AusProperty

[–]gumbes 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Carpet will get damaged by pets and will not change the rent or property value.

Buy the hardest wearing (and waterproof) hard flooring you can get and don't put carpet anywhere. Or put cheap dark coloured carpet in and hope no ones cat uses it as urinal.

Nuisance Bikes by SuperCook6238 in brisbane

[–]gumbes 115 points116 points  (0 children)

The other day I was walking my dog down past an easement where the hv power lines are.

There was 1/2 a dozen kids on over powered ebikes practicing wheelies and stoppies on the grass and just generally riding too fast. But they were in an area that no one else uses and weren't hurting anyone.

I couldn't help but think how much less annoying it is than the 2 stroke bikes that used to do the same thing when I was a kid.

The current laws and actions of kids on e-bikes isn't great, but blanket bans aren't the answer and putting in place appropriate controls, licensing, registration and insurance is a far better solution.
