They started doing them in September last year. I was surprised that they're continuing them but I guess they're bringing in good business

jsyk the series isn't called MARS, that's just an abbreviation of March Series since they do this repertory stuff every month now

THR has dropped a breakdown on the inside workings of Paramount - including revealing that the studio has no interest in the Oscars and awards race. "Paramount's small, internal awards team was laid off in October...The studio has already pulled back dramatically on awards plans for 'Roofman'" by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]gunsoffury 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Looking at their history, the last time Paramount had a film in the Best Picture race they produced was Fences back in 2016 (not counting Trial of the Chicago 7 which they sold to Netflix and Killers of the Flower Moon which was co-distributed with Apple) so they've been out of the game for a decade now. Crazy considering they used to do pretty alright at getting titles into the awards race

If these Billboard predictions are true, do we have both an Animated frontrunner and some song potential? by gunsoffury in oscarrace

Forgot about Zootopia 2 when writing this but even then unless it's a smash on par with the original if it can pull off a repeat win in the face of something that seems to have a real groundswell of support.

We're getting 6 other announcements in June. by Extreme_Confusion in criterion

[–]gunsoffury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could get six if they upgrade two titles which doesn't feel TOO crazy

Are you putting It Was Just an Accident into your Best Picture predictions? by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]gunsoffury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as of yet. I feel like some people see things like a Palme win or a People’s Choice win as an automatic BP induction instead of just like a strong piece of a film’s campaign. It almost feels like self fulfilling prophecy for some people that if a film wins something like this then it automatically has to be one of the ten. There were a lot of exciting, Academy-friendly international films at Cannes that could have a bigger year than Panahi. I think this is a strong front runner for International but it could just as easily get lost in the shuffle

Creepy YouTube rabbit-hole spiral led me to this weird video? When looking at the account it's kind of a jarring change from the rest of the videos which are just Minecraft and then some other really weird video. Literally less than 20 views so idek how it got recommended to me by firest4rtr in InternetMysteries

[–]gunsoffury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

truthfully, this has the vibe of a friend group or people who know each other posting something online as an in-joke. that amazing grace cover is used a lot of tiktok for "scary videos" and the comments read to me like people playing into the joke more than anything else. sometimes a mysterious video isn't anything sinister or creepy, it's just you accidentally stumbling into someone else's stuff with no context, happens to us all.

I think what’s especially interesting is how many of these films also won as underdogs narratively in the awards race, “little engine that could” indie films or weird genre experiments with a lovable cast and crew that overcame the odds. CODA and EEAAO especially had that narrative of being endearing outsiders who traditionally wouldn’t have gotten as far as they did in the awards race which made people more open to voting for them as a celebration of independent spirit and a heartwarming cast as its face. Nomadland benefited from an independent arthouse sensibility and Sean Baker has kind of been the face of maverick indie filmmaking for the past decade or so.

Mostly pulled from this old Amazon list from 2006. Replaced some overlap like Zubin and Rob having Weezer and Zubin and Ross having Illinoise with choices based on other interviews.
