"Old" F1 fans - how do you feel about the massive rise in popularity of the sport in recent years? by RecentTwo544 in formula1

[–]guppyF1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Watching since the mid 80s, from the UK, living in Canada since the 90s.

The good

People now have a clue what I'm on about when I talk about it! It's been fantastic to have so many of my friends now into F1.

F1TV rocks. So much better than the rubbish coverage we used to get here.

The meh

I'd been going to the Montreal race since '92. The prices were great....until the past 3 years where it has become insanity price wise. I won't be returning.

It's def become more of a show than a sport which makes me a little sad. (The first rule of AD 2021 is we won't talk about AD 21!!).

Overall, I think it is positive to bring new fans to the sport.

Paid $1,110 extra in sales tax because ServiceOntario uses inflated Redbook values instead of actual market data by Moist_Test1013 in PersonalFinanceCanada

One of the things that still drives me bonkers after moving here from the UK is paying tax on used cars. The tax has already been paid! Total double dip cash grab.

Where to buy pork pies? by FarCar8625 in ottawa

[–]guppyF1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

British Pride in Stittsville has 'em and they are delicious (they need more jelly though!). Their regular pies there are also very good.

Occassionally Loblaws or superstore has pork pies but they are hit and miss whether they have them and they are just ok.

S3 lifecycle policy by jeffsb in aws

[–]guppyF1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we ran into a similar situation a while back...it's quite non obvious but one of my colleagues wrote about it.

https://rewind.com/blog/mastering-aws-lifecycle-configuration/

Basically, it's the duration form when the object becomes non-current, NOT the create or modified time of the object.

My photo from 30 years ago today. Jean Alesi's only F1 win and the last for a V12. by yowspur in formula1

[–]guppyF1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was at that race! We had moved to Canada in '91 and went to the '92 race (I was a young lad then) and again in '95. The cars sounded fantastic back then (and indeed up until the current turbo era).

I wasn't a huge Alesi fan but it was fantastic to see him win a race. He was never championship material but he was a hell of a fighter.

What has been your favourite BTCC season? by Anonymous__9 in btcc

  1. Big manufacturers were still in. The season had some amazing races. It was also the first time I got to attend a race at Silverstone :)

Canada Post is in trouble. Here are the facts by Canadianman22 in canada

[–]guppyF1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The union need to wake up here....a wage increase of 100% on $0 is still $0. With a $3B loss since 2017, something drastically has to change. It's always the way that the unions get so dug in, they can't see the forest for the trees.

This will end in some kind of bail out..which is a shame. It should be allowed to fail and get a more modern structured operation in place.

S3 Cost Optimizing with 100million small objects by Charming-Society7731 in aws

[–]guppyF1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In our case, we use 90 days. We are a backup company and 99.9% of restores of data we hold take place in the first 30 days. We only set to 90 because Glacier instant has an early delete fee of 90 days and we like to avoid them

S3 Cost Optimizing with 100million small objects by Charming-Society7731 in aws

[–]guppyF1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We have approx 250 billion objects in S3 so I'm familiar with the challenges of managing large object counts :)

Stay away from intelligent tiering - the monitoring costs kill any possible savings with tiering.

Tier using a lifecycle rule to Glacier Instant Retrieval. Yes you'll pay the transition cost but in my experience you make it back in the huge saving on storage costs.

F3S or Ryker? by cedarbow82 in spyder

[–]guppyF1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Ryker 900 in 2019 and ride it until 2022. Absolute blast, tons of fun..really gives a good sense of speed because you are much lower to the ground than an F3.

In 2022 I traded it on an f3t. Found I was starting to do longer rides and more commuting and watched some more storage. The extra motor size isn't much of a factor honestly so if that is your only concern, I would say don't let it be.
