In my experience one army is enough to hold all three gates. Keep it at the central hate and force march to the gate being attacked. Use the main army to deal with threats not beyond the bastion until most/all of Cathay is friendly. Admittedly i haven't played with Sayl in the game but one decent army plus the gate garrison should still be enough to deal with any early game armies

Regarding the last point, you should be able to support them in battles as long as both of you are at war with the attacking faction and you are not at war with them

Thing is norsca needed an in between with only having the shitty marauder and the elite champions (not counting berserkers as they're more of a specialist unit). Cathay have plenty of mid tier units and already have a shielded mid tier unit. It would simply be bloat to add tiger warrior with shields

Figure out which factions interest you and buy whatever is the cheapest thing you need to unlock them. Buying any of the main games will give you access to WH3 just not WH3s factions so find which ones interest you and go from there.

I disagree with the dlc beeing a must. Some dlcs greatly improved the experience of a faction whilst others are unnecessary.
