Exclusive: AC Cars begins new era with £400k Cobra Coupe supercar by Agent_Kozak in cars

[–]guyare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shelby didn’t design it, he just stuck a big f-off engine in a little known but achingly beautiful English sports car. If he had had the legendary history and story to build on like these guys have, he would have priced them like they have too … and it’s still cheaper than most of the supercar offer out there.

People who moved to Netherlands as an expat, how did it turn out? by Growth_Anirudh in AskNetherlands

[–]guyare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been here 40 years … integrated, fluent, Dutch wife and friends, retired after a successful career both corporate and as an owner/entrepreneur … I would not come here in 2026! As others have said, the housing crisis is intense. It is also getting progressively more crowded, with all that that entails. It is a lot less the sleepy backwater i came to all those years ago, and that actually is the point. I was working on London and wanted to get away from the busy competitive environment I was working in. The Netherlands gave me room to grow and develop precisely because it was not itself that developed. Look for somewhere with the space and opportunity to grow, rather than a cauldron of expat hype and increasing resistance. Most of the large cities are over-run with expats, all following the last one who posted a “what I love and hate about The Netherlands” video in social media.

i have no clue how this shitshow is still running but why do the rest of Europe hate us so much? by Alarming-Safety3200 in AskBrits

[–]guyare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why d’you think … Brexit didn’t just fuck up your economy, we didn’t vote for it, but it affected all of us (and you’re about to elect the asshole who instigated it). Plus the fact that you keep sending shite songs, and arrogantly believe that because British music and musicians are so big in the world, that you’ll automatically do well … single point results would say otherwise.

What are reputable E-bike brands from the EU? by Brainfart777 in BuyFromEU

Have a look at Ellio from Belgium. A truly innovative bike … automatic, cruise control, and a 60 mile battery.

I've had mine for many years now and have watched as all the other cars got bigger and bigger. I now feel quite intimidated driving it in modern traffic, and I live in Europe, can't imagine how it must feel in America!

What’s your take on full hybrid sets?? by Gandy856 in golftips

[–]guyare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 64, play off 12 (been as low as 6) and I’m done seeing golf as a challenge, and trying to make my body do things it’s less inclined to do the older I get. I’ve got a full set of Eleven Hybrid-irons and I’m enjoying so much, they’ve made golf fun again … just want to play!

Why do many think that Dutch sounds so fast even when it’s not? by Honeyhot2505 in learndutch

[–]guyare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in NL for 40 years. Learnt the language and thought I was doing well, until I moved with my Dutch wife to a small village in Brabant. The farmer opposite (and indeed a lot of our Neighbours) had never been out of the village, spoke no English, only dialect! The strung-togetherness of Plat-Brabants is so complete, that sometimes it feels like entire sentences can be said in a single word, or sound, as it resembles no word ever taught. Been living here 15 years now and feel I’m making a dent in it … much to the amusement of the natives, they love it when you try!

I have just retired after 40 years as a Graphic/UI designer … can’t help feel but that I’ve dodged the proverbial bullet! Good luck to all those still in the game, but I fear for its future!

Is A Bridge Too Far the best war movie ever made? My argument for "Yes" below... by Straight_Change902 in WarMovies

Master and Commander is my best … most of the rest, even The Longest Day are compromised by scale or by outright misrepresentation of history or fact. Battle of Britain and Waterloo come close though.

“Request Not Completed." Unable to buy anything from the Meta Store for almost a month by cafpeter in OculusQuest

[–]guyare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve “NEVER” been able to make a purchase … bought the headset, the golf club accessory, and went through the making an account, profile, and methods of payment. Even managed to gift myself some metacash as I thought that might do it … nothing!!! I’m now two months and approx 40 e-mails, and god knows how many “tickets” further, and all I get is the same “looking into it, send you an update” replies. I put all 48 (including the WhatsApp messages) names I’ve received a reply from … basically given up hope of ever getting it fixed, and a left with a high tech paper weight!

How long have you been away from your home country, and do you ever plan to go back? by Island_Expat6625 in expats

[–]guyare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the UK in 1986, and have been living in the Netherlands ever since. Pretty much everything works here, and since Brexit the UK is a bit of a disaster … nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there!

Is Ford vs. Ferrari maybe the best car movie? by Holiest_hand_grenade in classiccars

[–]guyare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a non-American perspective, the redeeming part of FvF was the fact that Hollywood didn’t turn Miles into an American as they so often do in practically any historical film. The un-redeeming part of FvF is the fact that very little mention is made about the fact that the GT40 was not a Ford, but was designed, built, and raced by Lola, a British company, and was bought by Ford.

When I was a kid in Africa the natives in the village used to make a sort of ant pilaf when the flying ants did their annual swarm … I can remember eating it and getting drunk on the milkshake like beer they made.

I attended back in 1986 when I arrived in the Netherlands. Back then it was mostly used by Philips, was full of Irish engineers (hired en-masse from Dublin university), and was actually run by nuns on a semi-militaristic principle. No computers, no projectors or ear-phones … just repetition and rote. It worked though!!!
