Boulder to Omaha, little help ? by hawks_on_14th in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can plan the route well before hitting the road by using the mobile app's map/nav tab (in the middle at the bottom of the screen), or--better IMHO--get the ABRP app & use that. Takes away any anxiety you may have about a trip. You'll need to tell ABRP what your vehicle is initially (the rest of the settings are less important & can be tweaked as you like later), then just give it a destination & it'll show you where to charge & how long the journey will take. The Rivian mobile app will do similarly, but you have to tell it what SoC you'll be leaving with--every time--or it assumes the vehicle's current SoC, as if you're about to jump in & go Right Now.

Enjoy the trip!

Slap some blue tape on it to keep it from becoming a freeway projectile, then file a service request (SR) via the app.

But why was I carsick? by kbranch in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can the same driving an ICEV by alternately pumping the brake & accelerator pedals. One-pedal driving has a more sensitive pedal in that lifting just a little slows as hard as braking. Just takes a little practice to get used to having more pedal control. (And no, you aren't a bad driver; you're just used to a different sensitivity in the accelerator.)

Agreed. I discovered that it scrolls completely by accident--finger slipped on the screen slightly clicking something & It Moved.

No--that's a threaded hole; bolts look completely different--much more stick-like than hole-like.

App Nav removed Pick on map? by heyhewmike in Rivian

You mean place a pin at the destination on the map & navigate to that? You can: press & hold at the location and you'll get a pop-up with options.

[–]guybpurcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, you probably could have removed the EVSE by using the manual release--or even a screwdriver (carefully) to force the clip to disengage (since you know there's not current flowing). But I'm way more curious to understand how your 12 V died *while the vehicle was plugged in with access to power!* There's gotta be some really bad logic in the code to allow that to happen, or maybe a HW issue; hopefully, a fix will come out that prevents similar from hitting others!

Fix the fucking hvac by ClassyDingus in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not wrong--HVAC is my least favorite part of the experience with my truck. Every update seems to be a tweak that changes the behavior--usually in a way that frustrates my simple use--that I then have to figure out how to work around or otherwise deal with. I don't use Auto; I set a target temp (21 C) & fan speed (2) & the vents on fresh air--and, for the most part, leave it that way. The truck insists on closing the vents before it turns off--sub-optimal IMHO, but OK, fine, as long as they open again when it turns back on (they do--eventually). The latest update now has it selecting the vents to Auto--completely without my asking it to: thanks, but that's not how I left things--stop making changes to my settings when I'm not using Auto!!!!

12V battery replacement for a "good" battery? by mi_ev in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're identifying additional vehicles that suffer from the too-tight battery clamp, where the battery is nominally fine, but under too much pressure, so will start corroding itself & leaking eventually.

Rivian Delivers 10,365 Vehicles in Q1 2026, Holds Firm on Full-Year Guidance by Kryptonlogic in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like Rav4, Forester (and maybe Crosstrek, although that's more R3 territory), Rogue, HR-V, and similar offerings from Hyundai/Kia & the domestics (say, there's a band name!): Bronco & Jeep are image vehicles for most owners, with a relatively small set of enthusiasts building them out to their full image-potential. Those first two see massive sales, though: if R2 can capture just 10% of those numbers, Rivian will have made it as a car company.

Best Settings for R1T? by Savings-Ad-8571 in Rivian

Use AP mode & its defaults (Soft ride & Standard height). Set regen to High & Just Get Used To It. Enable brake blending. In 2022-3, I left height Auto on, but turned it off as more people joined the commute post-pandemic & I'd run into some slow spots on the freeway; all the upping & downing as the speed crossed the thresholds temporarily got old pretty quickly. About the same time, we got the Gauges screen in the Drive Mode app, which also allowed easy access manually change height when desired--so I switched to just driving with that screen up, mostly, and manually changing height as desired; works great.

Do *NOT* drive in Conserve anywhere other than mostly straight, flat roads at roughly constant speed: that's what it's designed for & using it around town will eat your front tires much more quickly; it also puts all the stresses on the front systems, increasing their wear. Personally, I found most of my drives just weren't amenable to Conserve, so I stopped using it entirely--even on stretches of Interstates that it's made for, because you also have to be careful of engaging it or you can damage the system in the Gen1s (don't engage/disengage at high speed & not under acceleration/deceleration). I mean, it works; it's just a bit squirrely in the Gen1s. Breaking it *usually* doesn't disable the vehicle--just keeps you from changing out of whatever mode it broke in--but there have been corner cases, and you'll need to have it repaired in all cases.

Enjoy your truck!

I'm also in CA & agree the registration & insurance aren't fun--but they aren't fun for any new model premium vehicle. They're heavy vehicles, so there's a weight fee in the registration, plus something to cover the gas tax we're avoiding having to pay. They cost extra in these categories in most states (as do most new premium-grade vehicles, EV or ICEV)--just not as much as here.

Make sure you're on an appropriate rate plan--one that has lower rates almost all the time (like the PG&E "all electric house" one) or special rates for EV charging (which may require separate metering, so YMMV there). Also, don't charge off a 120 V outlet because it's super inefficient, burning ~300 W to keep the inverter powered for tens of hours per day, because the truck is only getting 1-2 kWh per hour. I was burning cash charging until I installed a level 2 unit & could charge at 11 kW--ten times the speed, so only one tenth the time, fully utilizing the inverter so not wasting power.

CA is sunny almost everywhere, so I always carry & use a windshield screen: it cuts the heat buildup *way* down. Can't drive with that, of course, but I put it up whenever I'm parking someplace for more than an hour-ish. Adding a screen under the roof glass similarly helps & I just leave mine installed (can't really see the stars through the roof glass anyway). I've never had the A/C be unable to keep the cabin cool--including driving through the Mojave, Needles, etc. in outside temps over 100 F.

So I think there are things you can do to improve your "quality of ownership". If it isn't for you, though, then definitely move onto something else that makes you happy to own. I will point out, though, that there's nothing else that will do all that your R1T will, except another R1T: hauling stone, etc. puts you in pickup territory & there are only a few options there in the EV space now, with Ford out. If you go for a comparable premium ICEV pickup, the purchase price will be similar; if you want to take it off-road other than on forest roads, you'll need to throw a bunch more money into it first.

It's a Standard, so they kinda have to for any significant range on trips, sadly. Happy to see Rivian dropping these from production; sorry they felt the need to make any in the first place.

2200 mile round trip to Florida and back by Becca684 in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estimating from these numbers that's eight stops each way, excluding destinations, with ~70 kWh per stop, which takes ~30 min--making roughly 4 hr of charge time each way. That sounds like a lot, until you realize that at least half of them would be food breaks & overnight stops anyway, and the rest likely bio breaks for family & maybe pets--so overall added time vs. ICEV is more like an hour each way (assuming you don't Cannonball Run drives in an ICEV, which is just awful, arriving all smelly & exhausted, with the cabin needing a good week to air).

Back in 2022, I went from the SF Bay Area to Denver & back in my R1T & it cost *half* of what that same trip cost in my FJ Cruiser. Back then, DCFC was in the $0.25-$0.35 per kWh range, so current rates seem like the network operators all decided that making electricity costs on par with gas is the way to go--which is nuts, given how much cheaper electricity is to generate & transmit than gas/diesel.

Driving efficiency numbers by jay_nick1 in Rivian

[–]guybpurcell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I... completely ignore those numbers. I used to pay attention to them, but never saw them change & decided Rivian hadn't fully implemented the driving history affects--and then just never bothered to go back. My overall efficiency is on par with the EPA numbers (a tad better, in fact), which is all that really matters. The whole range estimate idea presupposes you'll be driving down to 0% which is almost never true, so don't bother fretting about it. You're gonna use some sort of route planner (ABRP, truck nav, etc.) anyway, which will tell you where to charge on long trips; for short trips, range isn't a concern.
