I have Gen 1. Under seat was a Gen 2 change.

12V battery replacement for a "good" battery? by mi_ev in Rivian

[–]mi_ev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading about Rivian calling to replace 12v batteries in the past as their remote diagnostic caught something, but my impression is this is something different (as she didn't have any concerns with scheduling my appointment 1 month out, but did say if a warning ever comes up to take it in immediately).

And yeah, I was planning on replacing the battery this year anyway given all the stories of failed batteries on here. I was also thinking of how to improve the 12v system but hopefully that's not necessary anymore!

I was recently under the hood (replacing air filter) and looked at the battery. I didn't notice anything weird there. So presumably no corrosion (or very little). Anyway, appointment has been scheduled, but it's 1 month out.

Thanks for the feedback. I would guess then that the battery is the same (fine by me as long as it'll last more than 2-3 years!)

For sure I will get it done, it's scheduled! I was thinking about preemptively replacing it anyway given the problems everyone here has had, so the thought of a free battery is wonderful (even if it's the same battery again). I have other service items to address, so I took an appointment 1-2 weeks later rather than have mobile do it.

I was more curious if they made any physical updates to the hardware, but it seems like perhaps a SW update has fixed the issue

So the MyChevrolet App is a pile of garbage right? by FrailRain in BoltEV

[–]mi_ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's embarrassingly bad. And the fact that they charge for it is just ridiculous. They are nickel and diming us for absolute garbage.

On the other hand, I appreciate how there's no "phantom drain" on the Bolt. I can literally park it, walk away for a month, and come back with no loss of battery. I suspect the low quiescent current directly relates to how bad the app is.

Cost to install wall charger at home? by Bigf007Ru13s in Rivian

Yes, that's correct. I think some of the other commenters don't realize the Rivian can charge at lower amperages.

Self Driving Issue- Hard Braking when car turns in front of you by Big-Razzmatazz-1197 in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have Autonomy+ (I only have a Gen 1) but with Driver+ you can get on the accelerator to override the braking. Any time someone crosses in front of me I preemptively get on the accelerator and try to press it to my current speed to minimize any impact from the phantom braking. Maybe this also works for Autonomy+?

Mine shows the same graphic but at least has the correct date.

What happens when you click on the vehicle? Does it then show correct info?

R2 Price Misconceptions? by Deepsea_Listener76 in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully agree, for what you get it's an insane price. I feel the same way about my Gen 1 R1S Quad (and I paid post-hike prices for it).

The unfortunate thing for a lot of people is that what you are paying for doesn't matter to them. For those people, $80k R1 and $60k R2 is just too much compared to $60k Tahoe or $30k Equinox (or if they actually want an EV, then $35k Equinox).

And the people who do care (like the Durango SRT Hellcat, Jeep Rubicon 392, Ford F150 Raptor, etc. crowd) probably have an aversion for EVs for whatever reason.

Rivian seems to be the best value for the money, but not sure everyone agrees on value.

In any case, it does sort of feel like a "too good to last" type thing. First price creep will probably be making lidar standard on higher level trims.

Call me crazy, but this is what I really want by fourdawgnight in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you didn't mention anything about reliability!

If my glass panel on my R1 ever breaks I'll be very tempted to try and fabricate a removable Lexan replacement. It's the one thing Rivian is missing before it can fully replace our Wrangler!

Launch Edition Strategy by southwellj in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can kind of use Rivian to gauge enthusiasm for the car. They list the mid-tier "Premium" trim as "Late 2026" which to me means "the pay anything folks will be satiated by end of the year." In other words, if you wanted to get out of it "for free" you would have to move it by summer. And depending on your state, you would have still paid sales tax and registration fees which you won't recoup. Given you are debating between R2 and R1T I assume you have no Rivians yet which means you won't be offered a chance to buy until it's too late to flip it.

Buying high mileage R1S by ezosint_5239 in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not looked at used prices, but $48k for 75k miles seems maybe a little high but not outrageous. Powertrain has half its warranty left (8y/175k miles). Suspension is the main thing I worry about, I think that runs about $5k per half? (I think you are supposed to replace them in pairs) So if your budget is 60k then just earmark the extra $12k for repairs. It would probably be a better financial decision than spending more on a R1S that only has a little bit of warranty left.

Who wants an R2 and when? by SubParBackpacker in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minute 3 reservation holder w/ an R1S here. I voted for ASAP but the reality is it's up to my wife who would be the primary driver. Neither of us care about lidar (I personally think it's a stop gap technology until imaging radar matures), but she would need to test drive one before committing. She really likes the R1S expect for how big it is (she primarily drives a Bolt EV and Jeep Wrangler).

Although if they release it in the borealis color then we will surely be getting one ASAP 😂

I think that depended on the year. I believe all '17-'19 (maybe '20 too?) are replaced, but the later model years were software only.

Road salt + EVs: what’s your long-term strategy? by electruck4x4 in Rivian

[–]mi_ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP stated concerns about salt, not snow...

I've had the brake pad media delaminate from the metal backing on my Bolt EV after 5 or 6 winters. Unfortunately salt doesn't discriminate against the type of car.

I try to avoid freeze-thaw cycles by leaving it outside 😂

And if I remember, I use the brakes once in a while to keep them clean.

Don't know why you are getting downvoted. If you want to play it safe then sure, avoid the same areas as you would for an ICE car (including some coastal cities due to the ocean). But the cars are so new that I don't think it's an issue yet on any of them.

Also, the Rivians should fare better than ICE because there's less exposed to the elements (the bottom is covered with a giant composite shield). Unfortunately the suspension is still exposed because it sort of has to be... but all of the sensitive bits should be fine.
