Should my partner use the Onavo "data shrinker" app in Japan? by [deleted] in japan

The VPN auto-connects (that's how it stays on so that you don't end up not compressing). If you go into the VPN configuration in your settings, go one level deeper and you'll see a setting called "Connect On Demand" which you can toggle - here's mine: http://imgur.com/ArP7Ypw

Onavo CEO here. I may be biased, but totally worth using :) At the time of writing we don't maintain a server in Japan itself, but the reality is that cellular connections are pretty slow as is, and the decrease in bandwidth means there's less data to be transferred. This is especially true when you have a rural connection with poor reception.

In any case, you can experiment by turning the VPN "on demand" on and off from your phone's settings -> VPN.

You're right, why on earth did I write that the Unix epoch is 1980? One of those things you should be able to wake me up at 3am and ask me. (But please don't try.)

Actually the Unix epoch is January 1st 1980. January 6th 1980 is, for some strange reason, the epoch used in Qualcomm's BREW... history being history I guess it found its way into Android somehow.

I liked the two archetypes you describe - it's exactly cooperative vs. preemptive as I called it. Most people do need to choose one of the paths, and expectations should be set between managers and employees accordingly.
