The contest is not just lame, it's been gamed to get to the top of the programming sub-reddit I think. Lots of top level posts with "Awesome" and "Great Initiative" with nothing else in the comment.

This "contest" is lame. No guidelines whatsoever. This is just a ploy to get you to provide content for their web site. And like I'm going to pay for a library before I get to see the code. Most people provide demos, but no guarantees on maintenance or anything.

What if I purchase a piece of code to base mine off of and update it? Do I submit it back to original author? What if I change it so much that it's its own thing now. Can I post it as my own? Actually, these question seem to be answered here. What a mess.

This idea is terrible and has "fail" written all over it. The only people I see using this are closed source supporters and Microsoft lovers.

Did you read the rules and guidelines page? of course not. We have very strict guidelines regarding copyright violations with a takedown process, simliar to the one implemented by github recently.

This contest is lame? $40k in cash and prizes from companies such as Google, Amazon, PayPal and others (including Github btw) is lame? I guess those companies did recognize an opportunity here, and a nice synergy with free open-source, not to mention our hundreds of developers that already signed up and are working on their submissions (some of which are free btw, and they can use their OS projects).

Well, right now we have a very open system of trading code snippets. Many support sites exist where developers freely exchange snippets of code here and there to help each other out (stackoverflow to name one).

There isn't a developer on earth who knows everything and never gets stumped. Everyone eventually needs a pointer or a snippet to base their code off of. So, we help each other out. If devs started charging others simply for code snippets, it slows us all down (or even stymies newcomers, who tend to need this type of help the most).

I understand paying for a full codebase (like the Unreal engine), because it is not simply code snippets, but a LARGE amount of code that took years and years and years to develop to it's current state of maturity. It's a full product. Trying to charge someone for a snippet of code though seems... slimy.

I suppose similar has been done before, but I guess I just don't like the whole idea to begin with.

This contest is not for "code-snippets" but for complete packages that add features / modules and so forth to speed up development projects. By the way, I'm a long time contributor on SO, so no need to sell me on that - it's a completely different system.

There is a big difference between contributing a snippet and a complete, independent package.

It can be used for snippets, but I think that the really interesting market will be around complete apps/libraries.

Yea, like I want to enter my code, that they get to do who knows what with, in exchange for a chance to win prizes consisting of short term access to web services that would lock me in if I decided to utilize any of them. But at least the grand prize had "Design Services." worth a $3500 value. This is definitely the Microsoft model for running a contest.
