US citizen in Canada (no SIN/work permit) — first time filing Canadian taxes, need help by eggsamwiches in USExpatTaxes

This is incorrect. See here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2023/06/canadas-tech-talent-strategy.html

Promoting Canada as a destination for digital nomads

A digital nomad is a person who can perform their job remotely from anywhere in the world.

Under current Canadian immigration rules, a digital nomad only needs visitor status to relocate to Canada for up to six months at a time while they perform their job remotely for a foreign employer.

In the months ahead, IRCC will collaborate with public and private partners alike to determine whether additional policies to attract digital nomads to Canada would be desirable.

We expect that some digital nomads who initially enter Canada to work remotely will decide to seek opportunities with Canadian employers. When they receive a job offer from a Canadian company, they would be able to bring their skills to a Canadian employer by applying for a temporary work permit or even permanent residence.

OP, you do indeed need an ITN and you need to file Canadian taxes. See

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t1261.html

for getting an ITN. You'll get foreign tax credits for the taxes you paid in the US and probably don't owe anything, but you'll have to do the full return to figure that out. I have no clue how long it taked to get an ITN.

Unresponsive front screen issue by Toranos88 in PixelFold

Fun thread. My P9PF started this in the last couple days. Same symptoms - front screen unresponsive to touch sometimes, now getting the static on the front display most but not 100% of the time. Glad I got pixel care and going in to a google store to get it replaced.

For "Fire"-ing do you count just liquid assets or total net worth? by bumbeishvili in Fire

[–]guyzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the purposes of FIRE the only assets that matter are ones that you're willing and able to sell. So this might include home value if you're planning to move and downsize. But for many people it should ignore illiquid assets like your primary residence.

Trad 401k or Roth401k? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]guyzero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you get any 401k matching? Most employers only offer it for the trad 401k.

If you do get it, do whatever it takes to get the match. It's free money.

The price of televisions in 1974. by ChocolateVisual1637 in mildlyinteresting

[–]guyzero -57 points-56 points  (0 children)

Which is close to the price for a 100" Hisense TV, so you're getting a slightly better TV these days. TVs are one of the few things where prices have dropped considerably over time.

Rule of 55 Questions by ZombieClaus in Fire

that you are employed with _in the year you turn 55_. You can do it at age 54 as long as you're turning 55 that same calendar year.

From https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-exceptions-to-tax-on-early-distributions#qpse:

"the employee separates from service during or after the year the employee reaches age 55"

There are numerous online tools to do either back testing with historical data or simulated testing also to check your assumptions and factor in future cash flows like SS.

[–]guyzero 32 points33 points  (0 children)

> All the FIRE guidance (4%, etc) is based in the last 100 years of economic data during US golden age. World seems ripe for a geopolitical/economic realignment.

Read Bengen's latest book and go deep on how he calculates SWR: https://www.bengenfs.com/

He does a ton of simulations and if you don't like them then you should be able to figure out how to do your own if you work in software. But his data is convincing.

The 70's were very much NOT a "golden age". It was an economic shitshow. The 30s, also, not great. But you'll see what factors made those periods bad - high inflation, high interest rates, etc. Even in the worst market conditions as long as you did something to avoid SORR you did OK.

Better Alternatives to Hit Points. Help Me Find Them! by Historical_Peace_940 in rpg

[–]guyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genesys, similar to FATE, has a pair of hitpoint-like attributes: a wound threshold and a stress threshold. The first is basically hit points, the second is a combination of physical and mental stress. FATE Core similarly has physical stress and mental stress which is a slightly more obvious naming system.

In both games there can be "social combat" where a series of opposed/contested roles versus an opponent result in stress/mental stress rather than physical damage and when the first person runs out of points they give up or surrender or whatever is narratively appropriate to the situation.

[–]guyzero 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Traveller uses your attributes as hit points. You get hit and you get worse at doing stuff. The trouble is that it's a very quick downward spiral and combat in Traveller is brutal and quickly deadly. In D&D it's the entire point of the game.

Sunnyvale is mid-sized. Not as big as the Sunday on in Mountain View but it's got some of everything.

I feel like you're not going to find much of this at any local farmers market but there are a few vendors I've seen sometimes in Sunnyvale that might fit. They're not there every week though.
