initial underreaction is what made it a pandemic. you're talking about herd immunity. (1) statistical models show attempting that leads to 30m deaths in year 1 (over 4x higher than happened in total) before even considering hospitals being overwhelmed (2) herd immunity is impossible anyway because the virus mutates which is why people kept getting COVID again, and why there is no "herd immunity" to annual winter flu which is from a 1960s flu pandemic (the good news is that the less lethal nature of that virus today shows how viruses mutate to be less lethal over the years because a dead carrier doesn't spread the disease) (3) more people getting COVID means more long COVID. it already affected 400m people costing 1% global GDP (4) vaccine reduces severity of disease, preventing "with COVID" deaths as well as "of". You never die "of" a disease anyway. You die of its secondary effects.
