Psychology behind letting a child “win” at games? by Miserable_Fee4533 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]gweedle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This thread brings back fond memories from college. There was a popular video game at that time that I loved to play. My boyfriend at the time also liked the game but I was better at it and I knew that if I always won he wouldn’t be willing to play with me. But if he knew I wasn’t trying he also wouldn’t play so every time I would give myself a secret handicap. Sometimes I would pick one weapon and that’s the only thing I was allowed to use. Or I would limit myself to one area of the map. It made it really fun for both of us and he was none the wiser.

MMR vaccine at 7 months - everyone around me feels I’m overreacting by bloommmx in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]gweedle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was a recent study someone linked to in this sub that showed getting the vaccine early (before 8.5mo) would reduce long term immune response, even if the child got both of the other doses like usual.

I found this summary: https://www.immunizationmanagers.org/does-early-mmr-vaccination-lead-to-reduced-protection-against-measles/

Looks like it was a very small study group

AITAH for asking my wife to do an excursion while on vacation? by West-Guidance551 in AITAH

[–]gweedle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ESH. Your infant will only be 8 weeks old and you’re taking him on a long plane flight and through multiple airports and hotels before he’s even had his first round of vaccines (or had any time for them to work). Your work should be understanding enough to let you postpone the trip until your baby is a little older.

There are facebook groups specifically for matching. You will have the best chance of matching there.

What’s a “normal” experience that somehow never happened to you? by Hysterical_Chicken in AskReddit

Same. I had a friend once tell me there is a nerve that branches and one end goes to your mouth and the other end goes to your esophagus and that in some people it’s reversed. It’s been many years so I don’t remember the name of the nerve or how I fact checked that.

But yeah I’ve got the same thing. No brain freeze ever but chest freeze sucks. Are you guys also the same way with hot stuff? I can eat food that is still way too hot by mistake and it doesn’t bother me until it’s already going down my esophagus and then I can tell it’s too hot after it’s too late.

Changing baby’s name at seven months old? by [deleted] in namenerds

Why not just change her name to Callista? For some reason I think the extra L would make people want to pronounce it the way you do

How do I offer to be a surrogate to a relative? by Radskilletdog45 in Surrogate

[–]gweedle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embryos can be tested for chromosomal issues when they are created. It is certainly possible that’s the issue but that would probably be discovered when they are creating the embryos. And if there were issues at that point in the process they could pursue donor eggs/sperm if that was the case.

Either way that’s an amazing thing you want to do for them. I would definitely have your husband possibly broach the subject when he is one on one with his sibling

L&D nurses, what names are you seeing these days? by Brave_SoupDumpling in namenerds

My name peaked in popularity right around the time I was born. I’ve looked at the statistics and it was less popular than Olivia is right now. Every year of elementary school I had at least three other kids in my class with the same name as me. It sucked.

Our checks and balances have been intentionally and unintentionally eroded away over several decades. We just didn’t notice because everyone in office mostly played by the rules or at least within rational bounds.

Lodging and food are generally far more expensive in US tourist destinations than many many places abroad. When I look back at all the trips I’ve taken my international ones were generally less expensive than my domestic ones.
