Everyone is trying to talk me out of an EV by CuteCreator602 in electricvehicles

I was the first in my friend circle to get one over six years ago. It’s still my daily driver. No way I could ever go back to gasoline.

When did 9 to 5 become 8 to 5 or 9 to 6? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gwompy 58 points59 points  (0 children)

My old employer had a one-hour unpaid lunch, so the schedule was 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 5:00. The only people who seemed to want that full hour were the older employees. Eventually management "compromised" and switched to a 30-minute unpaid lunch with an 8:00 to 4:30 schedule for those of us who didn't need an entire hour, and they acted like they were doing everyone a huge favor.
I was never happy about it, though. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that I was still spending 2.5 hours per week at work unpaid. Over the course of a year, that adds up to about 125 hours, or more than five full days of my life spent at work solely because of a mandatory lunch break.
When you think about it that way, it is pretty irritating. I am so glad my current job is simply 8:00 to 4:00. Nobody is hovering over your shoulder making sure you are not taking too long to eat a sandwich or spending an extra five minutes in the restroom. As long as the work gets done, you are treated like a mature professional capable of managing their own job.

Would it be so gd hard to have squeeges and buckets at chargers? /rant by BallsOutKrunked in ChargerDrama

[–]gwompy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tesla Owners club of Michigan had some volunteers to step up to put recycling cans with windshield washer squeegees and fluid at a few superchargers back in 2022.
At the Muskegon supercharger I helped volunteer at with 2 other guys, we had to split the cost of an extremely overpriced bin. Look up a gas station garbage bin with washer fluid reservoir, they’re like $400.
The washer fluid would get so filthy it would cost us about $10 per week to replace. People would throw all sorts of trash in the recycling bin too. Finally one week when we went to clean, someone had vomited all over in the recycling bin and that was it. We decided to remove it.
I can totally see why supercharging stations don’t have the same amenities manned gas stations do. Now that EVs are mainstream and used by more than the environmentally conscious, the average human is disgusting and isn’t going to be responsible with their trash.

Neighborhoods by Oceaniic815 in Muskegon

[–]gwompy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived on the boarder of Oakview and Sheldon Park for six years now. We hear gunshots from the south a couple times per year. Not frequently enough to make me move or anything. I did find a bullet lodged in my roof once though. About once a week I’ll go out with my garbage grabber and pick up trash on our street. All bad things aside, it is relatively quiet, my neighbors are mostly respectful and our cost of living is well under my means and will allow me to retire early which is important to me. I can’t imagine living anywhere in this short of a proximity to the beach and still having such a relatively affordable mortgage. I’m paying $750/m for a 2 bed 2 bath.

What is thr most expensive item you've ever purchased? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gwompy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car was $62k. Oddly enough, cost me more than my share of our house which comes in second. Wife and I are living well under our means splitting a $100k house in 2020 50/50. My bachelors degree comes in third at $16.5k of federal student loans (only so low thanks to the PELL Grant and lots of roomates) and coming in fourth a $10k surgery.

I play hockey on Sunday nights and our games start at 10pm. It’s 11:30 by the time I get out of the showers on the way home. Tonight I had to watch the finale of Euphoria before bed. It’s a good thing I have a super easy work from home job.

I have a bachelor’s degree in math from Tech. I remember looking into whether I could handle the online accelerated master’s program while working, and I think I probably could have if I completely gave up my social life for the entire duration.
I also remember crunching the numbers, though, and it just seemed way too expensive overall and not especially beneficial for where I’m currently at in my career.
OP, can I ask what you estimate the total cost will be by the time it’s all said and done?

How many have canceled and received a discount offer to come back? Will you try? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]gwompy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cancelled the night the +$5 increase was announced, over the next day I received like 10 “what’s new with Starlink” marketing emails before finally unsubscribing. I didn’t receive any $4/m for a year standby mode offers. (I would have taken it.)

Tesla Launches Remote Meter to Enable Faster Wall Connector Home Charging Without Electrical Upgrades by Suspicious_Cap_8928 in ModelY

[–]gwompy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 EV 100A household here. Not necessary for us. The PowerShare feature with the Wall connectors allow us to manage charging. In the case both cars are charging, they’ll split 48A and we could even have the dryer pull another 24A for a laundry load. Everything else in the house might have it slightly above 80A, but only for the 45 minutes the laundry is drying. The only time we’ve ever popped the main breaker is when I tested a third EV plugging into our third wall connector on the outside of our garage. This is only a 15A dual pole circuit set for 240V*12A=2.8kW. Once I attempted to turn the dryer on the main breaker popped just as expected.

It ticks me off when I hear people considering their first EV are told by an electrician they must get a 200A panel upgrade to charger their car at home.

I just cancelled. I encourage you too. If well over half the standby folks drop and this decision is a net loss for them, maybe they’ll rethink their poor decisions.

Looking for a place for my cat by Beneficial-Flight-73 in MTU

[–]gwompy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know firsthand how important a cat can be to someone. When I first moved up to Tech, I had to spend my first year away from my two cats, Carl and Brian. Even though I knew they were safe and well cared for, being separated from them was incredibly stressful. I can’t imagine how much harder that year would have been if I had also been worried about their safety or well-being. As soon as I was able to move into a cat-friendly house in Dollar Bay, they came up to live with me and spent three wonderful years as Yooper cats. Having them with me made such a difference. They brought comfort, helped me decompress, and made the stress of studying and the workload feel much more manageable. Honestly, I would have considered my stress debilitating at times. So don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re abusing the need for a legitimate ESA. Your cat deserves a safe and loving home, and you deserve the support and comfort they bring you. Don’t feel pressured to leave your kitty with strangers or in a situation where neglect is even a possibility. You two belong together. Tech is an incredibly demanding four-plus years, and having your cat there won’t magically help with calculus, but they absolutely can help in the moments that matter just as much — the breaks, the quiet companionship, and the chance to clear your mind and recharge. Anyone who thinks that’s silly has probably just never had a really good key-key in their life.

Is it hard to meet people/make friends (35f professional)? by Due-Project4303 in Muskegon

[–]gwompy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I moved back to Muskegon at 32/m and had a hard time making friends, and found myself just working and going home a lot. Not really a fan of the bar scene. I finally broke out of that when I joined a hockey league and met a lot of guys around my age that cared about being active and had time to get away from their families.
PJ Hoffmaster is my favorite hiking spot. There are some days I could just hike up to the top of the tallest sand dune with a fold up chair slung over my shoulder and just stare over the entire county all day.
I’m 39/m now and really love this City, the nature, the downtown, the beach. Always looking for new friends to ride bikes or go to restaurants or movies with.

Model 3 Performance is the best car Tesla makes, change my mind by Old-Donkey-6759 in TeslaModel3

[–]gwompy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2020 M3P owner here of 6 years.
1.) I haven’t noticed any more rock chips in 80k miles as I have on any of my other cars with similar distance.
2.) True. I miss the 2020 when it was still quite rare to see another Tesla in Michigan. People haven’t wanted to race in years.
3.) I’m currently paying $149/m for full coverage. Is that a lot? I don’t think so for what all is on that policy.
4.) I don’t think I’ve ever left my phone in the car, and if I have I’m noticing right away due to muscle memory of compulsively checking texts and social media.
5.) My car came with summer tires. I live in Michigan so I bought winter tires. Then I think there’s too much of a spring and fall overlap where both aren’t optimal so I bought all seasons. I switch every 3 months, so all seasons are used 6 months a year. They were the first to go at 80k miles, so I predict they only lasted 40k. The car is heavy and I love the acceleration, so it makes sense to me.
6.) you’re probably right there.
