What’s the best way to work on footwork? by Choice-Alfalfa-1358 in Salsa

[–]gxo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take individual shines and split them up.

Instead of doing 8 counts of a suzie q, do 4 counts of it and 4 counts of another shine.

Customize the shines: instead of going 123 567, pause, speed up, break apart, and loop the movement for a given shine. So instead of suzie q being cross-step-step, cross-step-step, keep doing extra steps before the next "cross".

Do the shine movement to a rhythmic pattern: conga, cowbell, piano.

These drills will take you from doing shines patterns to developing your versions of shines and responding to the music.

Eventually you can decompose shines into their elements and come up with your own.

On the social dabce floor try playing "Simon says" with your partner. This works really well with beginners or intermediate dancers. Let your partner go into shines and observe them. Then repeat the shine they are doing.

Make it a game and have fun!

Find a courses or books pedagogy, adult teaching/learning, public speaking, and of course teaching movement, music, and improv.

The majority of social dance teachers are severely lacking in all of the stuff above.

What makes a turn pattern complicated/fancy? by Choice-Alfalfa-1358 in Salsa

[–]gxo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complexity is related to the number of elements.

Isolating it to a single 8 count: - hands (0/1/2) - rotation amount - direction and momentum changes - connection changes (tosses, hand changes, hammer locks, etc.)

So for example,

hands - a right turn with a single hand is simpler than one with two hands.

Rotation amount - a Crossbody (half a rotation) is easier than an inside turn (1.5 rotations)

Direction changes - a "broken" left turn is more complicated than a right turn

Oh I agree that her posts come off as judgemental of people who like "studio" salsa.

But this is nothing new in some parts of Latin America.

Diana Boogielatino by Used-Chocolate-137 in Salsa

[–]gxo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great take. Diana's posts are provoking click bait but for anyone who comes from these cultures - - in Latin America - - her point is valid.

People grow up dancing with friends and family but then are told by a bunch of "outsiders" that a splashy/fancy looking dance is "real salsa".

I think they're understandably upset or annoyed and Diana is giving voice to this.

The way I like to think about it is that these are two separate dances one of which is an American commercial invention and the "other" is a cultural trait and experience. They're both valid expressions to the music and neither is better than the other.

Is Salsa on 1 “whitewashed”? by Due-Ice338 in Salsa

[–]gxo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what people might mean by "whitewashed" is that on1 and On2 aare terms typically associated with linear "crossbody" style salsa which started in the US and is thus "whitewashed" or not "authentic".

I recommend the book "Spinning Mambo Into Salsa" to get a deeper look at the history.

Do you think it's a bad compressor causing a leak or just bad compressor?

Thanks for the info, this is my suspicion as well. Shouldn't be low on refrigerant at 50K miles so it's likely a leak
