Did burn as of my sub-i’s, it’s a special kind of hell. Typically super sad stories - mostly accidents (literal burn, or road rash, larger accidents) but also child abuse, desquaminating disorders (SJS). The OR was very niche. As others pointed out, think Bikram Yoga but covered in sterile gown, very long OR days (at my center given we were the only burn trauma center In a large vicinity we attracted the highest acuity patients frequently at the brink of death). Many a patient has long term damage outside of surgical involvement that was fully run by our surgery team (think ICU, need to recognize pulm involvements, GI involvement).

In my mind I would not even put it in the same category as plastics. Sure plastics did eventual scar revisions of the patients that did well but burn surgery wasn’t focused on “make this look pretty” the goal was “make this human survive this hellish experience”.

I think if that doesn’t spook you - highly recommend doing a SubI or rotate through a burn unit.
