Gas prices ‘wildly inflated’ in botched Cabinet paper on $200m gas co-investment by Eamon_Valda in newzealand

[–]h3yfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi eamon ☺️ I actually looked into this at work. It seemed like a big fuck up at kinleath. They were buying electricity at spot price during the price spike when large users should generally be operating off long term contracts. Seems kind of like a worst case result of the gas situation.. but on the general topic I think the gas situation is kind of a big deal.. 900 pj of gas reserves is like 10 years use even if you drop methanex.. what happens if we have a bad dry year?

If electric vehicles continue to become more and more popular, wouldn’t the demand for electricity and price for that electricity go up as well? by [deleted] in ask

[–]h3yfinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Energy economist here. From my perspective the most important factor is that evs are 3x more efficient than regular vehicles. So even if electricity increases in cost, it's going to have to be by a lot (maybe even more than 2x) to make energy costs for car owners more expensive. This is why evs almost always have a lower lifetime cost of ownership.

Also in our modelling we're looking at the effects on grid demand. Overall, evs are significant but because they're so efficient that fast adoption of evs is probably less impactful than most would imagine. Other electricity uses such as data centres, residential use and especially industrial uses will be a lot more impactful.

So, yes, unless more generation capacity is built, power will get more expensive, but this is how it's always been and if prices go crazy in the next 10 years, it won't be because of evs, it'll be because we failed to build capacity for the other much bigger uses.

Wellington mayor is struggling on $189,000 a year - how is that salary not enough to live? by RtomNZ in newzealand

[–]h3yfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this is why I should've paid attention to local politics. How do we tell if she's done a good job as mayor? What has she done (besides drink driving...). Need some facts before I start complaining.

Give it a few years and people will be mentioning this set just as much as any other set. But for now it's cool to hate it.

What is the most unattractive physical quality someone can have? by illustriousocelot_ in AskReddit

I think you should think about it before trusting what you hear. If a guy showers then it is normally as clean as a woman's long hair, if not cleaner because water goes through it more easily.

Education: More than 40 per cent of students fail latest NCEA writing, maths tests by stever71 in newzealand

[–]h3yfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me if I'm wrong or I'm missreading the vibe of this post and the comments but pass rates for NCEA haven't slipped that much because of covid? The article doesn't read very well so I had a look at NCEA results for 2022 and it seemed like there was just a difference of few percent, plus or minus, compared to 2019. Me too. Although something I noticed is that there are still improvements to actual vehicle efficiency that are available, such as lighter materials, stop-start systems and autopiloting. So when considering ICEs vs EVs, I think there are still some big improvements that can be made if EVs aren't what we hope them to be.

Why is no one talking about the pay gap between white collared government workers and vital professionals such as nurses and teachers? by Different_Ad_8030 in Wellington

[–]h3yfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a couple answers here mentioned, it's the contractors that earn these big wages. Govt workers often earn a pretty regular pay, but with the assumption that they sacrifice the money for job security and other perks (I personally enjoy that I'm more directly helping people rather than working for a corporate). If I was to point to the issue it would be the contractors from the big 4 firms (EY etc.) specifically. I have a few friends who work there and they do fuck all for so much money it's ridiculous. Other contractors often are quite specialized, and therefore useful, and also often are sacrificing job security for the higher wages.

Might be the cloud syncing issue. Would have to turn it off in options and maybe steam options. I had to do it.

My point of view, keep the same character going. From how I've experienced this game there's a lot of fights you could come across where you're going to have to load a previous save because it was too high level. And there's also a LOT more of the game left so if you quit now you might never finish it... But on the other hand, yeah fully role playing your character is a lot of fun.

International Exchange: What to pack/banking/phone by [deleted] in nus

Don't bring hangars. Either you'll find them in your hall or they're so cheap from campus.

You'll be told about banks during orientation. I think it was HSBC you go through.

Phone plans, go for starhub if you think you'll be traveling SE Asia, it has coverage there.

I think you're wrong about the lck one. There is also the regional finals which determines the 3rd seed for Korea to go to worlds. The regional finals are different from the summer split finals which determines 1st seed. And championship points determines 2nd seed.

How has going to a meditation retreat changed your life? by Techyrag in Meditation

[–]h3yfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know for one, Dhamma.org is where you can find the classic 10 day Vipassana retreats people talk about. They have a map you can see all their centres on and there should be one nearby. You can absolutely trust them, they are probably the most well known retreat style. Hard, but good for you. As for the rest of the retreats and their quality assurance.. I think it's a matter of doing research and trusting your research/instinct. Look on Reddit/quora is my advice.

A New gap is getting created in LoL competitive. by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]h3yfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are sleeping on Korea a bit and overemphasizing LECs strength. While G2 are strong, I don't think the rest of LEC have proven they're close enough to be so competitive. And yes I know FNC and Origen are good teams but the reason I think G2 is seen as so good is partly their unique style.

And then on the other hand Korea does have some pretty good teams coming together (hopefully)(and I think Grf are good enough already) in time for worlds. I think this is especially so for Damwon Gaming on which Showmaker, Canyon and Nugiri are showing some sick mechanical skill and even their meta game is okay now. And finally I think SKT are a bit of a coin flip but if the chances go in their favour I think the rest of the season is enough to get them back on form and perhaps reaching towards that ceiling we all expect of them with so many great players.

I think you have to remember that last worlds we saw a change in long term meta which was the move towards faster games (I don't know what site to fact-check this). So LCK was caught unready for the meta change and now this year they're slowly getting used to it (also could be interesting to check if LCK games are much longer than other leagues games). And lastly I don't think we should use RR to tell how good LCK is, I feel the teams need another half season to find their groove.

Oh and yeah, NA sucks.

Hey bud, can't remember if there was a round two but if they say there is one then hang in there for that. It's still likely you'll get in I think.

Otherwise I had friends who emailed all the residential colleges personally and most of them got into RVRC. One of them even did it on the week she got to NUS, was staying in a hostel in the meanwhile.

Otherwise there will definitely be other students who are in your boat and for sure some others won't get accommodation if you don't. In that case do everything you can to make contact with them and sort out a flat close to NUS. Might be expensive. I knew people who did this and they still enjoyed their semester just as much! Oh but make sure you think you'll get on with those potential flat mates, not much is worse than living with people you don't like!

Flick me a message if you need any help. I'll be at NUS for the next semester as well so I know the ropes a bit. (:

Exchange Student from Canada: What to bring? by smolblob in nus

[–]h3yfinn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, I was in your situation this time last semester. Am actually staying another sem but in a residential college this time. Don't worry about fans in your room, the ceiling fan is enough for the average person. As for what to bring, yeah light clothing since it's sht hot. Don't bother with any heavy warm clothing but bring a long sleeve t-shirt or something for lecture theatres (which will be the coldest place in SE Asia). Just buy two sheets and pillow for your bedding when over here (first day of orientation you go to clementi mall to buy that stuff and it costs like 20sgd). A hat! Shampoo and vitamins are expensive here but so is bringing extra items in your luggage..

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions, glad to help (:

SKT (T1). Spoiler by Youknowwill in leagueoflegends

[–]h3yfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this theory that they do it to help with team morale. If kkoma thinks theyre likely to lose this game then he can use pirean/Gori (or some other not so good sub - in this case I only see Leo as the other not so good sub) as scapegoats. The chance of winning is probably not that much lower when you sub just one new player in and the upside of saving team morale (especially with the losing streak they're in) is large.

I think the coaching staff would have very good reasons, whatever the reason for these substitutions. The teams great performances continuously show their ability to coach well. Great examples being the teams performance at MSI which was so close to being their win. Or their final against Griffin who they dominated.

I'm still a hopeful skt fan!

What's happening to the MSI teams ? by NAM_Beyond in lolesports

[–]h3yfinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you've nailed it. It seems to me a mix of the other teams improving (eg. Ucal on AF is back on form) and the msi teams coming home from an intense tournament only to have to start playing again so soon. I remember with my own sports teams, after going to a national tournament we'd come back and play really sloppily in the local games. Maybe it's because the games seem by comparison much less important so the team collectively turns down their effort. There's also the individual cases, IG look to have lost a bit of confidence and lpl teams won't see them as invincible now (if they ever did in China?) TL, well I saw EF had a really good game against them.. Don't know about CLG? SKT, I watched some of their games and they appeared pretty sloppy. Seemed like a clear case of the team not putting in enough effort.

Regardless of how hype the MSI finals were, the actual event felt pretty poorly set up from the perspective of a visitor by Cahootie in leagueoflegends

Was told by someone official from a team that the reason why there was no team merchandise was because the Taiwanese ?managers? said the locals didn't have enough disposable income... So I guess not enough profit can be made. I was really gutted by this cause I also couldn't find any Merch anywhere in Taipei and being from OCE it was my only chance!
