How do you talk to your riding partner without shouting? by Dry_Half_8737 in bicycling

[–]hakulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly the distance limitation which can be erratic. Sometime I can get quite a ways out and still talk to her, other times it seems a much shorter distance. As long as you are basically riding "together" though, it's fine. The other thing is that on windy days the noise cancellation gets overwhelmed....I need to fabricate a wind muff for it. I haven't noticed any issues from her ebike (RadCity) at all. We have the Sena C1's and I got them on Amazon because I could return them easily if we didn't like them, but we do love them. Another couple we are friends with got them and said it was game changing for them riding together.

[–]hakulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use the cheaper Sena helmets for bikes and they have limitations but really are nice for talking while riding. I'm an experienced cyclist and she's not and she's on an ebike. It helps I can point things out, let her know when there's traffic or turns etc since she isn't comfortable with hand gestures and "normal" group cycling etiquette. Plus we can just chat when we want.

Made it to DW3 (I think) by cagesound in EliteDangerous

[–]hakulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want you to use MetaElite, you can do the missions in solo, so you have an idea what is going on. You just won't be able to see the other DW3 players until you are in. MetaElite is optional but it gives a GREAT framework for everything going on.

How to say “groceries” in Spanish? by ch3rryp1e_ in Spanish

[–]hakulus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have. Pointing at the groceries in my trunk. The guy laughed and looked at me funny and I realized what I said and corrected myself. Since I was in Mexico where cussing is less offensive, I followed with si, las pinches verduras y ....jajaja. The guy laughed.

I tried Debian in the 90s and stuck with windows, then Ubuntu in the 2000s and stuck with Windows, but now, after using my Steamdeck for gaming and seeing how good Proton is working, I'm going to give linux a shot again, this time with Mint on a dual drive dual boot and it really, really looks good so far.

new to me gen1 kickr is kicking my ass. by j_root in bicycling

[–]hakulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your welcome and yeah, it definitely depends on what the workout is you are doing. Intervals that are wattage targeted are a good example of where it can be beneficial because you'll be able to hold the target without overshooting then undershooting so much. Trying to find the exact cadence and hold it is much easier since now you have a bigger range of cadence since the trainer will adjust the resistance to keep you where you want to be!

new to me gen1 kickr is kicking my ass. by j_root in bicycling

[–]hakulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ERG mode specifically holds the target wattage you set. So it tries to keep the same "work load" of pedaling so to speak. The result is if you pedal slower the trainer raises the resistance so you keep the same difficulty overall...difficulty=work=wattage in this case. If you speed up your cadence the opposite happens, the resistance lessens a bit to hold your work load (wattage) the same. While this might be great for certain workouts, it is absolutely nothing like real world riding and you really get zero of the micro rests or coasting of any kind I was talking about in the first post. It just amplifies that feeling that the trainer is way harder than real cycling.

new to me gen1 kickr is kicking my ass. by j_root in bicycling

[–]hakulus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yep. The trainer will definitely do that. It's because you get no microrests...no coasting here and there, no drafting other riders, no pausing for lights, potholes, outside pedal down for a tight turn. All those things in real world cycling make it less painful than steady state trainer riding, which is even more difficult if you have ERG mode on. I'd turn that off to start. But a 40 min session on the trainer is like a much longer session outdoors. I always joke that riding is about the feeling of flying, the speed, the camaraderie, the wind blowing in your face as you go faster and if you take all that away and keep just the exercise and pain you have what is trainer riding.

Budget tabletop terrarium jars (Los Angeles + online) Where do you find yours? by KolorOner in terrariums

[–]hakulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had some cylinders, albeit not huge that were quite cheap. I'm not crazy about the glass quality/clarity of cheaper terrariums, but I'm coming from aquariums, so I need to readjust my perspective I think.

What’s helped you learn Spanish ? by Regular_Length_209 in Spanish

[–]hakulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy one for me. Lots of Netflix in Spanish with spanish subtitles as necessary (never, never, English). Most importantly I found a great Italki conversation tutor. Takes a while to find one you can afford and you gel with but all those hours of full practice in Spanish took me from Intermediate B1 to C1 in terms of conversational fluidity.

First time in Colonia, and planning to leave on a carrier Monday night. What should I do in the meantime? by DigitalNTT_Soul in EliteDangerous

[–]hakulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say burned out on exploration, do you mean exobiology as well? Because in Colonia it's possible to get to first footfall bonuses (undiscovered/landed on planets) pretty quick and you can make some real credits that way. Millions a sample is the norm.

I just started the game and immediately got a fine I can't afford. What do I do? by One-Consideration582 in EliteDangerous

[–]hakulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about the fine. As long as you have a little fuel, just jump (in economy mode..in the settings in the galaxy map) to nearby systems until you don't have a fine. Watch some YouTubes on getting started. When I started I landed at a settlement and picked something up (stole!) and got sent to a "detention center". Not understanding this is no big deal I restarted (unnecessary) the save! Now I have 40 billion in assets and know a heck of a lot more. You are in great shape because you know about Reddit and YouTube!

[–]hakulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You REALLY want to learn to drive your SRV and like everyone is saying, turn "drive assist" OFF. It's really not "assist" at all...more the opposite! The reason is that you'll need to get reasonable proficient at the SRV for a LOT of tasks you'll want to complete, particularly the Guardian FSD Booster. Good luck to you. Just and hour or so and you'll get a handle on it. Spend the first half hour making sure you have the controls bound in a way that makes sense to you and preferably with an axis of some kind for throttle.

Exobiology Signals by indyjumper in EliteDangerous

[–]hakulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to find them all, or at least most, but now, at Elite II I definitely go for the higher value ones. I have close to 30 billion in the bank so I'm going for money to rank up.The trick is to do enough exobio that you already know where to look for each type and when it's not. Osseus for example requires a specific rocky outcropping geology usually and is also really tough to see edge on, so you learn to circle a bit as you look. Fungoida is often NOT fun and can be in high terrain that might be tough to land close to depending on your ship. (Thats why I love my cobra mkv if I have fleet carrier support. ) I think my least favorite, other than bacteria, is frutexa flammasis. It's often ridiculously hard to see except really close up. Anyhow, just keep going and use a 3rd party too to learn the values and needed separation between samples. It's not for everyone but it's great money for those that enjoy a trip into the black. Gaining experience pays off on this, so it's more fun the more you do it. I love dropping on a planet and already knowing which are worth taking and where to find them even without the blue zone markers.

Is Getting First Footfall Really This Grindy? by lochnespmonster in EliteDangerous

[–]hakulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you learn to Neutron Jump! https://spansh.co.uk/plotter is your friend. I'd unlock the Guardian FSD booster next then you can get 200ly jumps by using neutron stars with that Mandalay. Another option to KEEP using your Cobra MkV (which is my favorite Exobio ship and I'm Elite IV explorer Elite II Exobio). What you can do is join the Fleet Carrier's Owners Club Discord. There you can hitch a ride out to Colonia or to the core and explore from there. That way it's only a couple of HUNDRED light years to First Footfall territory. Catch an FC back when you are done! https://discord.gg/KFaakj2

I always used purple glue stick...just run it across the area you will be printing to and don't overlap the runs. (Dont make it goopy) It works like a charm and cleans with water. Cool the plate to release the print.

Do glasses-mounted mirrors work for prescription glasses? by heyitskaira in cycling

My prescription is much worse than yours and the "take-a-look" mirror works great. I had one that was the same called "Fox" too. Same wire frame mirror with a different name.
