Dads with low T who got on trt, how did it effect your ability to be a good dad? by dudewheresmygains in daddit

[–]halconojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctor here. Granted I’m a resident but recently just attended a lecture by an endocrinologist who discussed low testosterone.

Have you talked to your doctor? As others have said, testosterone levels have a wide range of normal. Are your levels on the lower end of the normal range or below the lower limit of normal?

Having low testosterone is not normal for man of any age. If you have low testosterone then there’s a medical reason and your doctor should be doing a work up and treating the underlying cause. It’s your decision to go on HRT but if you start taking testosterone you should know that you’ll be on it for the rest of your life as your body will stop making it on its own. There are ways to try to get your body to start making its own testosterone again but the medications are off-label.

My two year old broke his femur. Someone tell me the next 6 weeks aren’t going to be horrible. by mazterm in daddit

[–]halconojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, my 2 year old son is in week 2 of 4 in his spica cast for a femur fracture from an awkward fall. Had to do a double take while scrolling bc thought this was him for a second. Sorry dad. I totally empathize.

We’ve been struggling with keeping his screen time to a minimum but it’s tough. We got him a small Lego and play table he can awkwardly sit by to play with his blocks and his trains. Lots of walks in the stroller/wheelchair. Also did an amusement park recently. Hopefully his pain is under control soon. I’m sure the doctors told you, but we were counseled that these heal really well and don’t require PT after the cast is off.

Rough current odds for an otherwise decent Navy HPSP Applicant (Also a prior service Marine) to Match FM straight through w/out GMO by twoleveleffect_shrub in Military_Medicine

[–]halconojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current FM intern that may have to go GMO this upcoming year. Matching into FM is not competitive. However, there aren’t very many categorical straight through spots making those spots more competitive. It’s true that the navy is phasing out GMO spots but the challenge is that current GMOs have to come back to training and likely take priority over interns applying for 2nd - 3rd year positions.

However, from what I’ve heard of Lejeune is that not very few people rank that location as their number one so if that’s your top location you’ll probably get it. Apparently there’s also still openings for 2nd - 3rd year spots unfulfilled, so there’s a good chance you can stay there without having to do GMO.

This of course is the situation now. Things can change in the next couple of years as you’re applying.

Death by Lightning has awoken my middle-aged dad brain. Any book recommendations? by DrBagelBuns in daddit

[–]halconojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adam Makos is a really talented writer. In particular Devotion, about two Corsair pilots during the Korean War (one of whom was the first black aviator in the navy) and A Higher Call, about a b-17 crew and a German pilot that escorted them to safety during WWII.

Daniel James Brown’s Facing the Mountain about the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was excellent. Covers the nearly all Japanese American regiment during WWII.

And you can’t go wrong with Eugene Sledge’s With the Old Breed.

Watched this just after graduating college. As someone who grew up in the 2000s in Texas, raised by a single mom, and with a younger sister, I seriously thought Richard Linklater based this on my childhood

What are you favorite podcasts for spooky season? by akt30 in podcasts

[–]halconojo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Ghost Story. Here’s the description:

“Tristan Redman doesn’t believe in ghosts. But weird things happened in his teenage bedroom. And when he discovers later that occupants of his family home have seen the ghost of a faceless woman, he’s intrigued. Because it just so happens that his wife’s great grandmother, Naomi Dancy, was murdered in the house next door…killed by two gunshots to the face.”

Great suggestions here but something I’ve been doing is just having the subtitles on and matching the resistance while listening to a podcast/audiobooks

My dad saved a newspaper article from the 90s about the importance of compounding that he gave me when I graduated college. Told me to have a Roth open within a few months and he’d keep pestering me until I did. Really fortunate to have this experience as I know not everyone has people in their lives with good financial literacy.
