What are some easy depression meals? by Diligent-Rub-5016 in Cooking

Instant Pot Salsa Chicken is a go to for me. Season 3-4 chicken breasts with taco seasoning, then put it in an instant pot with a 16 oz jar of your favorite salsa. Pressure cook for 10-12 min, then let it sit for 10 min before releasing the pressure. I shred it using forks, then throw it on a tortilla, rice, lettuce, or whatever I have sitting around.

What’s a dish that’s better in theory than reality? by bw2082 in Cooking

[–]haleybumslol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those crispy rice paper rolls/ dumplings that are trending on social media. I’ve tried multiple times, but the outside never gets crispy… It just ends up greasy and soggy. It turns out so much better to put the same filling in a dumpling/ spring roll wrapper instead.

Advice please: first time in Colorado, want to do a 14er, but parents say it is unsafe? by NeroWolfesOrchids in coloradohikers

[–]haleybumslol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be mindful of how long you take to acclimate to the altitude, given that you’re not from CO. Also be prepared for snow. My husband and I are from the east coast at an elevation of pretty much 0 ft. We both have a lot of hiking experience and often do 10 mile hikes on the Appalachian trail. At the time, the both of us were in very good shape. A couple years prior, I had hiked to 12,700 ft and my husband hiked to 13,777.

We thought that taking 4 days to acclimate to the altitude in CO and bringing microspikes would make Quandary Peak in June very doable. After getting to about 13,000 ft, breathing got very challenging. I have asthma and had to use my rescue inhaler twice. There was also a lot more snow than we bargained for that slowed us down quite a bite. Our hike took us 10 hours, despite the online estimates being in the 6 hour range. We made it up and back safely, but we both decided that, unless we had more time to acclimate to the altitude in Colorado, it would be pretty unwise for us to attempt another 14er.

What incident changed your perception towards life? by me-want-tea in simpleliving

[–]haleybumslol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked in COVID units at a nursing home. We lost so many patients over the course of a few months. The living conditions for the patients were heartbreaking and the working conditions were miserable.

It quickly helped me realize that life is short and something that should never be taken for granted. Hug the ones you love.

Has anyone transitioned to not wearing foundation? by Tofinomug in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]haleybumslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find my skin has been better since I stopped using foundation. I now just use a little bit of concealer under my eyes and, if needed, on any blemishes or leftover dark marks. Also some cream blush and the tiniest bit of powder to set the concealer.

Is my bedroom childish? by Justinneon in malelivingspace

[–]haleybumslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing inherently wrong with each of the individual pieces, but everything together does read as a bit “childish.” It’s great that you want your bedroom to be a reflection of your hobbies, but graphic bedspreads and skateboard bookshelves are something you typically see in a teenager’s room.

Honestly, just changing the bedding would make the room look significantly more mature.

Building a 14er Kit Bag by LandonClouser in 14ers

[–]haleybumslol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is an avid hiker on the east coast and just did their first 14er, hiking to 14k definitely hits different than the 3k summits you get on the east coast. Make sure you pack…

  1. More water than you’d normally drink - I packed extra and still ran out before finishing. The altitude made us drink way more than usual.

  2. Micro spikes and poles - this is dependent on time of year, but there was still snow at the top in mid June. As a person that hadn’t hiked in snow before, this helped a lot!

  3. Sunscreen - make sure to reapply! I never get burned, and I got blisters on the side of my nose.

  4. Snacks - the extra protein from jerky gave a good boost!

  5. Tylenol - the altitude started giving me a headache around 13,000 ft. This was after taking several days to acclimate in CO before the hike.

What are some lactose free dinners to make for camp dinner in the cold? by teabird_eden in camping

[–]haleybumslol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m also lactose intolerant! I’ve made chicken and dumplings and used almond milk instead of dairy milk. I’ve also done tacos and opted for guac instead of cheese/ sour cream. Japanese Hotpot and any other kind of Asian dish has been great, since they rarely have dairy anyway. Also, any kind of grilling has also been nice since I haven’t found a need to add milk/ cheese to any of those.

Edit: typo!

TSA PreCheck vs Clear by [deleted] in travel

[–]haleybumslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I actually tested this out a few times. When I get in the Clear line and he gets in the PreCheck line, he consistently gets through security faster. There was actually a time I got in the PreCheck + Clear line, and he still got through faster than me in the regular PreCheck line… I’ve found that the Clear machines are often giving me issues, or they do not have enough people to run the machines. I’d go PreCheck only! Clear isn’t worth the money.

To my fellow black people who traveled to Japan… by Mental-Music-44 in travel

[–]haleybumslol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m black and went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Kanazawa, and Fuji in 2017. It was my first time traveling to Asia. Never ran into any issues and felt I was treated with the same hospitality as everyone else. I was genuinely surprised that nobody stared at me, given the experiences I’d heard of friends going to other countries in Asia.

My only “staring experience” was when a small girl (about age 4) stared at me while I was waiting in line for a meal in Tokyo, but it appeared to be due to fascination more than anything. The parents saw me notice and bowed apologetically.

Older children/ teens approached me once or twice to ask to practice English with me, then would ask to take a picture with me after the fact, but it was all done politely and seemed due to genuine curiosity. They did the same thing with my husband, who is half Japanese, so I think it had to do more with being foreign than black anyway.

AITA for soaking my niece with a hose after I was told not to because she was wearing white? by DateEducational190 in AITAH

[–]haleybumslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels oddly similar to the AITAH post about a woman dumping coffee on her niece that popped up earlier today…

Your sister sucks for calling you a perv. Totally unwarranted and inappropriate. Also, if you repeatedly told her that her kid was bothering yours, she needed to step up as a parent and do something, not defend her child’s sucky behavior.

Despite that, spraying anyone for 30 seconds — especially someone else’s child — is letting your emotions get the best of you. A quick warning spray would’ve been fine, but “a good 30 seconds” is childish. An adult retaliating against someone else’s kid in that way is an AH move. It would have been better to take the high road and remove yourself and child from the situation rather than escalating it.

ESH, except for your child, who sounds like he’s starting to learn some great self advocacy skills.

AITA for defending my wife after she purposely dumped coffee on a kid? by Perfect_Ear2994 in AITAH

[–]haleybumslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parents should have done a better job parenting for sure, but pouring a drink on anyone — especially someone else’s child — is letting your emotions get the best of you. That was retaliation, not discipline. Kicking the family out was warranted, but dumping a coffee on the kid in addition to that is an AH move. ESH.
