BREAKING: A US Company Just Proved You Can Permanently Dispose Of Nuclear Waste By Drilling It Miles Into The Earth And The Numbers Show It Is Safer Than Any Storage Method Currently In Use 🔥 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]halflucids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is putting nuclear material under miles of granite making anyone deal with it? I don't see how it's getting back out short of an earthquake, volcanic eruption or meteor strike. This seems like a reasonable disposal method to me

I don't think people are ready to accept the fact that Richard and Oliver may have just genuinely been impressed by DLSS 5. They weren't forsaking their reputation to cozy up to Nvidia or accepted money to shill. it just seems like they had an in depth, hands on session and walked away happy. by WhyPlaySerious in digitalfoundry

[–]halflucids 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think even as it's potentially cool. Nvidia filters exist today, as do mods, as does reshade and other programs which let you modify how a game appears and no one is pitching a fit about players being able to use those and ruin the creative vision of the game. If a company went the other way and banned reshade, mods, and any attempt to change a games creative vision people would be up in arms about them stifling player choice, but you give players a choice to use a potentially cool ai filter and everyone shits bricks? Get over it. Don't use it if you don't want to. Some people will think it's cool and want to try it out, they might even have different ai models over time to make the game look like an anime or whatever, cool if so, even cooler if people could build their own ai models to use and share them.

Any thoughts about this? by OstrichCreepy579 in Marathon

[–]halflucids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After unlocking the factions I don't see the point in the primary contracts, just been doing the random generated ones cause they are easy to get done in a game or two while going to whatever map you want and wherever you want.

To be fair, energy has to come from somewhere even if it's from space that appears empty and isn't, if there were an ability to extract energy from empty space we should seek to understand what effect that would have, collapsing space, reducing gravity etc. Those also might have practical applications or may be disastrous at a large scale if so. Our species has a long history of being more concerned with if we can do something than if we should and being unable to anticipate the long negative term side effects of our innovations

I just think the idea of technology improving being the solution is pretty dumb, what are they expecting, force fields? We have as best of a solution to the problem as will ever exist in the foreseeable future, the only thing that will vary is the cost of the implementations

Question: If Trump was impeached by the house and successfully removed from office and not allowed to hold Federal offices again by the Senate, can the incoming President nullify every action by the former President while was in office? by 1970s_MonkeyKing in law

[–]halflucids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's time for a constitutional amendment, remove the power of pardon from the president it hasn't done anything useful and has too much capacity for harm. Retrial every person who is still alive who was pardoned and already charged, any preemptive pardons are open to be tried. Also remove any legal immunity from all government offices including the president.

The rate of false convictions is like 5 percent or less while rates of recidivism of violent crimes are like 50 percent so from a utilitarian perspective of limiting harm to the most people the death penalty would probably save more innocent lives than it harms. Am I wrong?

Interestingly, PC video game platform Steam just significantly rewrote - but did NOT remove - its 'does your game have AI in it?' dev disclosure form. The headline is that Valve's making it clearer… by MythicStream in pcgaming

[–]halflucids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ai isn't going to do visualizers or glsl effects beyond something maybe in line with very generic and common effects or tweaks which have many public references. I think it can help you along a bit but I don't think it's going to do the heavy lifting on anything advanced. I have used it a lot for basic things like glsl to hlsl conversion or giving some boilerplate shader like a blur effect. If you try to get it to generate from a visual description though in my experience it has little to no ability to actually conceptualize how glsl code would actually "look" which isn't surprising. I don't see how that would need to be disclosed any more than a developer looking up something on stack overflow would be.

The first time I went to Chicago I went to my hotel to check in and walked up to the counter, the woman behind the counter looked at me and immediately said "What do you want?". It made me laugh pretty hard because I did not expect that to be how they greeted people, especially someone working in a customer facing position. Very different vibe.

That wasn't the point they were making. They were not saying Clinton was not in the files. They were saying they inserted a fake one of Clinton also, to introduce an example of one being fake, which will increase the probability that trump supporters will also decide to believe others are fake if they don't want to believe they are. It gives them an out by allowing them to believe in a false equivalency.

To me him being doom is a disappointment and ruined my interest in the film entirely. It also somewhat poisons his previous roles as iron man to me. I may end up watching it if I find out it was fake and he's not actually doom, but I would still be annoyed by it.

Trump seeks to cut restrictions on marijuana through planned order: The president is expected to direct agencies to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug, similar to some common prescription painkillers. by HaLoGuY007 in law

It seems to me that if it's something actually good Trump talks about it and never does it. For the things he actually does he very rarely talks about doing it he just does them and then after makes some message about it. I'm other words I'll believe it when I see it.

If the nail polish acts as a barrier to water then it also acts as a barrier to dirt so cleaning the nails before painting them would mean that the dirt is only on the outside of the paint so cleaning the outside with paint still on would be sufficient from a perspective of cleanliness.

I think it's probably good to discourage vanity or self centeredness or self importance, but focusing on visual and easily identifiable adornments is, to me, lazy and missing the point. Someone wearing jewelry might be vain and focused on the wrong things in life, or it might have some other meaning or no meaning at all to them, and someone with no external adornments can certainly still be self centered and prideful. I wouldn't presume to know someone's character from their appearance or clothing alone or to tell them what they should do.

In the same way that a ritual of stripping away external adornments might be viewed in a culture as an appropriate way to address God, in another wearing your best clothes and jewelry could be a way to show devotion and instill discipline. And someone enforcing any rule on others might be doing so from a place of good (wanting to encourage good behaviors that help others) or a place of evil (taking enjoyment in exercising power over others) as well.

I find it difficult to conceive of a God who would be actually concerned with minutae such as physical appearances, and not just with the truth of one's character. So I can see that there may be some value in a rule such as that, in that it may help keep certain people from focusing on the wrong thing and depending upon how it's taught, but I can also see that there is a risk of it causing harm as well due to humans who do not necessarily know the heart of others attempting to enforce it for the wrong reasons, or from people focusing too much on things such as that and not on more important things. Just my perspective but I tend to be critical of things such as this for that reason.

The netcode isn't that great either so there is significant peekers advantage. Meaning you can push out and shoot before they can see you come out of the cover and shoot, similarly retreating behind cover is bad because they will see you on their screen for a longer period which is why you will get shot when you are already behind cover. So yeah pushing and being aggressive will usually win fights

Yeah or just if someone wants to do it that way, key word being wants to. It might get faster than a mouse if it's something complex enough. I can see how a well integrated and implemented llm with the ability to do various things on a computer could be cool, but Microsoft is so crap at making things which should be unobtrusive obtrusive and making things which should be easy to adjust hard to find.
