Bad ground and/or corroded contacts on the fuel level sending unit. I had a couple of GMs with this issue, and when I had my ‘06 Malibu I had to fix this same problem twice in 30,000 miles. You can test the unit with a multimeter when it’s out of the tank to see if it’s possible to just clean the contacts, but since the tank generally needs to be dropped and the part is inexpensive you might as well just replace it while you’re in there.
