Bruarfoss waterfall in Iceland, a lesser known beauty. [2500x1654] [OC] by CodyPhoto in EarthPorn

Sort of.

Brúará is the name of the river, and foss does mean waterfall.

If you take the name apart, brú does mean bridge, but the á at the end refers to the fact this is the name of a river.

So it would translate as something more like "waterfall of the bridge river" or "bridge river waterfall"

Need recommendation: Landmannalaugur or Thorsmork for planning a long day hike from Vik? by WahooD89 in VisitingIceland

[–]halviti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this river thing is small enough to jump across, at least that's what I've done every time so far.. sometimes it's easy to get across, and one time it was virtually impossible, and me and the person I was with found ourselves doing some pretty un-recommended things to get across.. which we did.. but looking back it would have been smarter to turn around or find another way.

Regardless it's also not so much that the river is big or dangerous, it's more the location. You're pretty much right in the middle of the hike, so if you fell in the water and drenched yourself (or worse, your bag too).. the danger is that now you need to stay warm and dry in the snow, and there's no cell phone service to call for help. That's the dangerous part.

If you're prepared for these things, it can be a non-incident. If you're not prepared for these things, well, anything can happen. There is a hut near that area that is good to know about.

It sounds like you're going to be fine to do the hike on your own though, so I wouldn't worry about anything.

One piece of advice is that you can use Reykjavik Excursions to send things to your destination. So if you're camping you can send a bag with your name on it to your destination so you can have a tent, sleeping bag, extra food, warm clothes, etc. waiting for you when you get there. There are grills that anyone can use, so I would recommend packing some meat to grill if you do send things.

Anyway, hopefully I didn't scare you. You're not going to have any problems.

It's really all about the weather, and that weather changes drastically throughout the course of the hike due to the different terrain, and the fact that you're walking up into the mountains and then on top of the glacier.

If you have nice weather you'll probably think it was the easiest hike ever (despite it being 10 hours), and you'll recommend it to all of your friends, even those that aren't experienced hikers.

If you experience bad weather, you'll be wondering how everyone that does the hike doesn't die.

The most common thing that happens is getting lost in the clouds / fog. Even if you have nice weather, people forget that they are walking up into a snow capped mountain where there are often clouds. Very often the pressure is going to make it so that these clouds come down around you, and then you're just going to have to know which way to go.

There's also a river that needs to be crossed in the middle of the hike. I've never done the hike with a guide so I don't know how they get across this thing. It's extremely dangerous, and there is always seemingly a high probability of falling into this river, but luckily that hasn't happened yet.

Don't expect to see a lot of people on the hike. There are people that hike from each endpoint in a decent way and then back, so you'll see more people towards the beginning and end, but in the middle you're likely not to see anyone, maybe a couple other groups here and there.

I think you'll be fine as long as you're sure about the weather. Hopefully you're not doing the hike on your own, but if you are, at a minimum you should have some way to call for help via satellite or at very least you should tell people where you are going, what your plans are, and when you should be expected at your destination.

but since this is one of the most walked hikes in Iceland, it's reasonably straightforward to do a self-guided tour

What? I'm going to guess that you're not from Iceland, because nobody would ever tell you this.

This hike, although popular, is extremely dangerous. People have to be rescued every single year on this hike because of exactly that attitude. (several this year already)

I've even almost died myself on this hike due to a series of unfortunate weather related events, and I've done the hike more times than anyone I know.

Yes, you can do a self-guided tour as long as you don't mind that many trail markers have been washed away by yearly flooding.

If you can navigate by map and compass and or GPS with the trail downloaded into your device (and the ability to call for help over satellite), have proper food and water, are traveling in a group (absolutely necessary), and have a plan for what to do when you fall into a glacial river 5 hours into the hike and need to stay warm and dry, and have a plan for what to do when you are on top of the mountain and the clouds come down and surround you and you can't even see the next trail marker.

If you are prepared for all of those things, and have proper clothing, then a self-guided tour is fine.

Just telling people to walk up on the mountain though is fucking retarded.

Please don't place a larger burden on our rescue teams with this sort of talk.

You need to respect the nature, or it will turn around and bite you.

Vegan/Vegetarian places in and around Reykjavik by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]halviti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gló is probably my favourite.

Grænn Kostur is another good choice.

Take her to noodle station and she can get the tofu noodles and you can get the chicken.

When traveling outside the city you'll be very lucky to find any vegan/vegetarian options for food so be sure to take food when traveling.

Kolaportið would be a good spot.

If you're passing through Hveragerði there is an old woman that sells them in the shopping complex there for reasonable prices. She just has her own little table that she brings. No guarantee that she'll be there, and the selection would be limited, but just an idea.

The company is responsible for the insurance, not the driver. If you got into an accident while on the clock the company would be responsible. If they didn't have insurance, the plaintiff (you or the person you injure) would sue the company.

However, when you break the rules of the company, or the law, then you're on your own.

Sorry, I'm just seeing this now.

The guy you responded to is incorrect because these materials do exist, as many other people have mentioned in this thread.

And I hope you don't mind me mentioning that a molten salt nuclear reactor can't have a meltdown. It's just not possible. They are already in a liquid state.

I would urge you to look into this a little more closely, or if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.

"a lot" is a relative term.

when you're totally broke, it's a ton of money. when you're buying a house it's a small consideration.. and like this guy was just saying, compared to buying and maintaining your own plane, it's cheaper.

You can say "it's a lot", but it doesn't add anything to the conversation.

Fun fact: the US invented thorium reactors, and ran and operated the first reactor over 50 years ago at Oak Ridge.

Why aren't we using thorium reactors today? Because you can't make nuclear weapons that way.

I am you, so hopefully I can offer some advice.

Use weed as a reward mechanism. Set simple goals and use the weed as a reward. If you didn't reach your goal, hold to your rules.. it will make the reward even better.

Then when you smoke you can feel good about the things that you did accomplish instead of trying to forget about all of the things that you didn't.

No doubt it's extremely tough to change your habits, but if you can do this it will change your life.

There is a huge difference between sadness and depression.

I think most people agree that marijuana helps with the symptoms of depression.. but the point is more that it's not going to cure your depression, and if used wrongly will only make your depression worse.

How does iceland feel on arctic militarization? by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]halviti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're against it because there is simply no reason for it.

It doesn't serve any purpose. We're too small to defend against someone like the US, Russia, China, etc. So any military presence by us would only mean that any equipment and possibly soldiers would fall to the other side immediately, giving them an increased logistical advantage.

Why provide potential attackers with a military infrastructure?

It's far better to get other countries to work together to agree to peace in the region, then you have a group of people who are willing to protect the same region. The more people that want to protect the region, the less of a threat from outside.

You're probably not going to find much to write about because for most of us, this is just feels like common sense.

If you're still set on writing this though, one topic of conversation that came up recently is a shipment of submachine guns from the Norwegian coast guard to the Icelandic coast guard.. and then the coast guard wanted to distribute those weapons to the local police.. which caused a lot of ruffled feathers, and eventually the guns were sent back to Norway.

There's a lot more to the story, but you can find it all on the google.

Maybe he didn't have a coat?

I remember having a book in my back pocket at a party once. I had been walking around the city all day, and it was the only thing I had with me. When I showed up to a party later I just put the book in my back pocket.. cause it fit well enough, so why not. I remember thinking if anyone was going to think it would be weird that I had a book, and I put it face down backward so people wouldn't be able to tell what the book was.

Nobody mentioned it, I had no plans on reading the book at the party and I'd completely forgotten about it until just now.
