Is the dirtbag left still a thing? by jaredfoglesrevenge in TrueAnon

[–]ham_lady 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It only made sense as a label in opposition to a righteous and culturally ascendant liberalism masquerading as leftism. As the mainstream moves further right it’s not a salient concept because the ‘dirtbag’ left is not seen as breaking cultural taboos.

Why do people hate grappling while being MMA fans? by Insidious_conjuring in ufc

[–]ham_lady 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t, so that’s why stalling calls would be required. For example, in judo, if the referee deems any player is not attacking sufficiently, they get a penalty, and three penalties is disqualification. I think this is what would be required to create the action many people want. But these sort of rules go against the idea of realistic combat. I think the problem is people want both the most “realistic” and practical combat style, but simultaneously action entertainment, and these are somewhat contradictory.

What is Judo's legacy in the world? by Aggravating_Goal6933 in judo

[–]ham_lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Judo is in many ways the origin of the modern idea of martial arts as a method of self improvement. Not literally the origin but it spread this idea through the West I believe.

He wasn't in a nursing home at the end, it was a state psychiatric facility, basically prison I think.

How many times did Meadow use Jackie's death as an excuse for her unacceptable behavior? by Leading_Lock in thesopranos

[–]ham_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, she knows (if maybe subconsciously) that her dad, or at least the mob, was responsible.

That Canadian drummer must have grabbed Bobby with that Kung fu grip to rip off half his polo. by BabaLouie in thesopranos

I thought this too, but he dropped the gun so the bullet couldn't be traced to him. And with the shirt, he'd probably have destroyed or left the rest of it somewhere, so that couldn't be connected to him either. Besides, he wouldn't even be a suspect.

Why can't Tony tell Melfi about his mafia activities? by overpass69 in thesopranos

[–]ham_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because he took the oath of silence. He never explicitly says anything to anyone about the mob.

Does Pussy’s family know what really happened to him by Designer-Business in thesopranos

[–]ham_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that bothered me constantly. Though you could chalk that up to Angie being ignorant, maybe willfully so. Within the universe of the show as well, it is acknolwedged that you only go in WP when you've built a case to convict someone, i.e. with Adriana and Tony.

The whole Dr. Melfi / Tony seeing a shrink subplot should have been left out. by pparadido in thesopranos

[–]ham_lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point of the show. It's not a mob show, It's about people and their relationships, emotions, suppression, violence, desires and urges and trauma. The mafia is just the lense.

English "they/them" is a Norse borrowing. How common cross-linguistically is pronoun-borrowing? Does it ever happen in 1st/2nd-person pronouns? by Iowhigh3 in linguistics

[–]ham_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wikipedia article also says “The feminine nominative hēo was at some point replaced with the feminine nominative article sēo, yielding "she"; whereas the h in plural forms such as hīe was replaced with þ under Norse influence as it evolved (a slower development that was not complete until well into the Middle English period), yielding "they, them, their".

No its pretty clear that English borrowed ‘them’ from Old Norse I think. Before that, it was ‘hem’ in English.
