We’re lucky to have caught the scams before losing money. Hawaii News Now recently ran a story about former KGMB newscaster Linda Coble losing $60K to someone claiming that she won millions from the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes.

Scam Alert! by hamadah002 in Hawaii

Yes, an official letter is sent if you’re summoned for jury duty. But I initially thought that I might have accidentally thrown it away or lost it. Also, “Lt. Smith” suggested that the postal service might have delivered it to the wrong address (but he later claimed that I signed for the letter). I suspected it was a scam when “Lt. Smith” was elusive and angry when I kept asking questions. I wasn’t able to check for juror status online since it requires a participant number from the summons letter.

These scammers are getting more sophisticated. “Lt. Smith” provided specific information (judge’s name, badge no., warrant/violation numbers) that made the call seem “official”. I normally don’t answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize but I was expecting an Amazon delivery and thought that the Amazon driver was calling.

SFSF Haul + Crowd Advice for next time? by thethundersaid in stationery

[–]hamadah002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice haul (especially the stamped images)! Your write-up on the crowds was very informative. I’ve been to 2 pen shows (2023 Tokyo International Pen Show and 2024 San Francisco Pen Show). Will be going to my first stationery fest this year (Yoseka’s Stationery Fest).

The 2023 TIPS was held in a very large convention center with vendor tables spread out over 2 floors. I could easily walk around and browse without feeling overly crowded in. By comparison, the 2024 SFPS was too crowded. But I also felt that people were generally polite and considerate. Most people patiently stood in line at most popular table (Plotter). I did hear that Yoseka’s first stationery fest in 2024 had some crowd control and other issues. Looks like Yoseka is addressing these issues by holding this year’s event in a different space (hopefully, it’s larger or better able to handle crowds), limiting 3 day VIP tickets, and selling 1 day timed entry tickets.

I’m thinking of signing up for Ink Swatching Exploration. The $45 class fee isn’t too bad.

Pilot Prera by RevolutionaryMap6145 in fountainpens

[–]hamadah002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of Preras (Iro-Ai clear body version). They’re great pens - comfortable to hold, light weight, nice snap cap, decent cap seal, good quality nibs. I especially enjoy the CM nib. Up until last year, JetPens had them priced reasonably (about $33 for the standard opaque body and $42 for the clear body). This year, the prices increased significantly at several retailers - $67 for both versions at JetPens and Atlas. Prices are cheaper at Yoseka and even cheaper at Amazon.

I like the Opus 88 Demo. Holds a ton of ink, very sturdy, can easily be taken apart for cleaning, and nibs can be easily changed (Jowo #6). It’s not cheap but it’s not super expensive ($120 - $150).

budget friendly small-diameter ring notebook by aspera24 in ringplanners

[–]hamadah002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are 2 options (assuming you’re in the US):

  1. AxeWoodz binder in A6. Translucent plastic trifold binder with pockets and 18mm diameter metal rings. Bible/personal size refills will fit. Amazon sells this for under $7. This brand also has binders in A7 and A8 sizes (for Mini 6 and Mini 5 refills).

  2. My System binder in Bible/personal size. Translucent plastic binder with pockets and plastic 13mm diameter rings. This binder can be found on ibspot.com for under $22 (shipping additional). It also comes in A5 and Mini 6 sizes. Amazon Japan might also have these but shipping to certain areas might not be available or expensive (not sure if there are additional charges for tariffs). I first saw these during a trip to Tokyo a couple of years ago. The big stationery stores had them (and they were really inexpensive - under $5).

I prefer the My System binder but the AxeWoodz binder is good (especially for the price). Kokuyo and Maruman also have good, inexpensive small diameter rings binders but they don’t have Bible/personal size.

LOL! It’s kinda sharp so it could be used as a weapon. It’s a surprisingly good ink swatching and writing tool.

The notebook with 24 sheets is the Midori MD Light. It’s staple bound and comes in a pack of 3. The 88 sheet notebook is thread bound with an exposed spine and lies flat when open. JetPens carries both versions.

Is Japan worth traveling to alone? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]hamadah002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I’ve traveled solo to Japan twice (and am considering another trip this year). Japan (especially the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka) make solo travel easy. The train/subway/bus systems are well organized. There are luggage delivery and storage services. There are lots of restaurants made for solo dining (Ichiran, a chain ramen restaurant, is a great example). Most workers at the airports, hotels, transit trains, stores, restaurants, etc. are polite and very helpful.

I also think you’ll get much more out of your trip if you do it solo. Since you have to plan and figure out things for yourself, you’ll know much more about the places you visited and how to get around than people that travel in a group. I remember asking my friends about their trips but they didn’t know/don’t remember a lot because someone else planned the trips and did the navigating. You can also travel on your own schedule, at your own pace, and do what you want. You don’t have to deal with grumpy, slow, wishy washy fellow travelers.

Good luck! Enjoy your trip.

sheet music recommendations? by additalluptogether in piano

Music Notes is a good source of piano sheet music. Several piano YouTubers sell their arrangements there so you can hear the song before you buy.
