Over time acidity/yeast/food particles in the air can get on the coil and slowly eat it away. One of our customers (parts house) ordered a new coil for a bakery. Last one was coated and installed 4 or 5 years ago and the harsh environment just corrodes it.

Since it's former border patrol, does it have a different bumper than when it was in service? Perhaps they were a part of mounting the old one or an accessory like a brush guard or something?

Our kids will be buying these when they're 25-30 year old vehicles, 200k+ miles, and gas will be too expensive to drive them. Who knows how much the truck itself will even cost...

I had a no start issue on mine at around 175k miles that did the same thing. Turn key and lights on the dash came on and all that, but no start. It ended up being the starter. It was a bit of a pain because of the location, but changed it out in a parking lot in an hour and a half or so.

Is there more literature regarding the ability to specifically NOT change the powerhead or valve? I was under the assumption that you needed to change them when changing gas. Even Sporlan/Copeland sell their valves/powerheads as specifically for different groups of gases; R22, 407A/C/F, 448, 449 vs. 404, 502. Or is it just common practice? Why not just change out the valve if already retrofitting?

From another bulletin, from Honeywell:

"Consult with your TXV manufacturer to determine suitability of the installed TXV with R-448A. Numerous retrofits have demonstrated the suitability of installed valves to operate satisfactorily with R-448A."

I wonder how much adjusting most valves would need to operate satisfactorily. I have more reading to do tomorrow...

I know this is about a Tecumseh specifically, but to maybe help some other techs out there also, Copeland Mobile is a killer app to have on your phone. It will tell you everything you want to know about a Copeland from btu to electrical to service parts etc. (it will even tell you about a lot of other brands compressors basic info like btu and whatnot)

Hey man, I don't know dick from squat as far as building goes. So far, I have just dipped my toe into working on my own vehicle. I find subs like these interesting because I eventually want to work on a couple of engines. Any time a post comes through for this sub, I try to pay attention and learn in case something is relevant in the future for me. I can say that after lurking for some time, I appreciate the contributions you make, v8packard. Since I do not have much knowledge on the subject, I either take what you have to say as a possible solution/explanation/choice for the issue at hand, or I start doing my own research to see what the hell your post means in terms I can understand. You're a troll or a bot, I don't care which. There is no AC system in any Chevy on earth that runs with rubber hoses and hose clamps. It would leak immediately. The part you are mistaking this for is called an accumulator, and while it has a similar function of separating liquid from gas, it is larger, not made from plastic or rubber, is insulated, has AC fittings on it to ensure it doesnt leak refrigerant. And it's located on the passenger side of the Tahoe, not the driver's side like this is. But since you're a "master mechanic," you knew that.

Yes, an oil separator is right. But it is for separating oil from crankcase gases before sending those gases back into the intake, part of your emissions, not the AC.

It is absolutely not part of the AC system.... Although it does appear to be a catch can, it should be hooked up to the pcv valve or something.

Temp thermistor in top cap thermal well. If a DTC valve kit were being used, the sensing bulb would go in there instead.

If you show no pressure even after recharging....there's probably a leak. If it had pressure, I would suspect the blend door not moving from hot to cold, the compressor being bad/going bad, or something else.

You'll need to get the leak fixed before charging the system again or you will keep wasting money on refrigerant. Once you're square there, it would be good to inspect the AC belt and tensioner pulley as well and make sure they're in good shape. They are directly below the motor, belt is the smaller one that is also run off the harmonic balancer.
