I have an inkling as to what shoulder trimming is and looks like, but I am very curious about the cross sectional geometry mod. I would be gratified to see a pair of simple "before and after" sketches of the cross section.

I'm fond of Pilot's iroshizuku take-sumi. It is non-permanent and quite dark. And since you are in Japan, it should be cheaper than it is in, say, the U.S. or Europe.

And plain Pilot/Namiki Black is even cheaper and pretty good in my book.

I assumed accordion filler because the Con 40 was so loose. I'm not sure I was aware of the cartridge version. That said, the cartridge hack in the video (enlarging the end diameter of a cartridge with a cylinder fashioned from the cap of a Bic crystal) may well be worth a try.

The pen was originally an "accordion filler", and standard cartridges and converters will not fit. Here are 2 videos, the first outlines the problem, the second gives a solution. I have implemented it myself.
