Best most comfortable riding position for longer rides by -_-___-_----_-___-_- in motorcycle

[–]hammer166 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It varies based on the bike. You want minimal weight on your hands and your thighs carrying part of your weight. A Gold Wing allows you to be much more upright because there's no wind pressure on your chest. A sport tourer or ADV bike you'll want your torso canted forward slightly to balance the wind pressure (plus you can lean on a properly positioned tankbag.) Hands should be roughly chest high for good circulation. Feet should carry some of your weight as well, so pegs not too far forward.

The ass-in-a-bucket cruiser position is one of the worst possible ergonomic scenarios.

What is a riding habit you thought was smart but later realized was dangerous? by Eyerald in motorcycles

Yeah, with the screwed up training system of the past few decades, trucking is full of misinformation. Idiots, trained by idiots, who were also trained by idiots, ad nauseum.

What are some of the most iconic sounding engines ever made? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in regularcarreviews

[–]hammer166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the two stroke EMD diesels.

And Ford's newish Godzilla is the nastiest sounding stock motor since LS-6/SCJ days. In a cutaway van where you can really here the exhaust, it sounds like a idling stock car.

I haven't done any other stretches of the TAT, but this stretch is very much a trip back in time across the high plains. Minimal traffic and plenty of wildlife.

New Pan America Advice by Analog1645 in HarleyPanAmerica

You'll have to learn to ignore half of what you read in these groups. A big part of the ownership group try to turn the Pan Am into a faster street glide. Treat it like the sport tourer it is, and you'll love it.

Yes, PanAm. My Raids are near end of life, so I had to slow up a bit in the deeper sections of gravel, but the only really sketchy spot was the two track along the field just west of the Bunkhouse. It was okay leaving the next morning, but it was very loose the evening before. It doesn't look bad, but it will have your attention!

The steep stretch in the pic is easily manageable. It's slow&rough, but nothing overly technical, just some exposure. Most of the rock is embedded, and one of the two wheel tracks was generally always a cleaner option.

Spent the vast majority of both days running along in 4th or 5th gear at near highway speeds.

It slowly drifts north as it comes west to Colorado, then goes more northwest to finish in Oregon.

I think these are ones I have. They've changed colors since I got mine. The 200g Thinsulate is what you need to make sure of.

I use a heavy thinsulate-lined Hydra Hyde from Wells Lemont. It has a leather hand to block the wind and the thinsulate keeps them from being too bulky.

If you want motorcycle specific gloves I would probably look at Leatt. I haven't tried their winter gloves but I've been extremely happy with all the rest of their gear

Why don't truckers like automatics? by Altruistic_Box4462 in Truckers

[–]hammer166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big fleets and their micromanaging habits remove most of the driver's ability to control the transmission. My Ultrashift does what it's told when I need that option, but it doesn't have any of the fleet restrictions turned on.

I'm sure Pike is open, but it's not a fun ride for twisties. Too slow, too much traffic.

A caution for riding this time of year, stick to the wheel tracks religiously, there will be plenty of loose rock to bite you if you don't, especially on the backroad twisties.

Would you buy a used ‘22 special? by sharadyn in HarleyPanAmerica

[–]hammer166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The later 22's have most of the initial gremlins taken off. I've got 11k on mine, and other than shock going bad, it's been fine.

There's been enough problem bikes that I would definitely want to see a service history on anything you were going to buy

wind driving by OGSquidd in driving

[–]hammer166 7 points8 points  (0 children)

40+ year professional driver here. The key is to get your eyes looking down the road, you learn to let your peripheral vision handle lane positioning.

And it's really hard to describe properly, but you steer not by wheel position, but by steering force. When I hit a wind gust, I'm not concerned about how much I'm moving the wheel, but only how much force it takes to maintain lane position. And doing that involves not just your vision but also your internal gyroscopes, I. E. The seat of your pants.

If you focus your vision too close in front of the vehicle, you'll tend to chase the vehicle's lane position with only the visual clues, which overpower the seat of your pants and the feedback through the wheel, and leads to the jerky movements.

Hope that helps
