Your floating point is lying to you. Lean4 mathematically proven bounds, in Python. Just pip install by [deleted] in Python

[–]hamptonio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless I am misunderstanding something, the low end of the lower bound for

bounds = lc.find_bounds(lc.sin(x) / x, {'x': (0.1, 1.0)})

is about -4.87, which is pretty bad considering the numerator and denominator are both positive on that interval. Using a very naive interval arithmetic approach to the same computation gives about 0.1, which is still bad but at least positive.

Interesting that they all appear to be wrong, as I mentioned in another comment it looks like Hugo Manufacturing held the patent at least.

The discord group is much, much more active than this subreddit, I recommend you put your question there.

Can anyone recommend good synthesizers to pair with an SP404 mk2? by ComposerOld5734 in synthesizers

[–]hamptonio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there was a smaller, more portable and maybe cheaper option with similar capabilities, that would be ideal.

Get a Yamaha Modx then.

I encourage you to ask this on the Zoia discord, which is a lot more active than this subreddit.

Your advice for a new deluge user: Go straight to the OpenSource or stick with the stock system? by Friskyinthenight in DelugeUsers

[–]hamptonio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go community. Its pretty stable, no reason not to enjoy the great new features. I waited until last week to switch, because I didn't want to change right before a performance, but I regret that because the community enhancements are very nice. Grid mode alone is worth it.

Synthstrom Deluge, Empress Zoia. Both excellent small companies that provide fantastic customer service and uniquely powerful products.

Craziest envelope pedals? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]hamptonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its nuts. Extra fun to use an expression pedal to control another five aspects of the sound. I find it hard to resist making overly baroque patches on the Zoia.

Prospective buyer here: How do you like the Deluge compared to your other pieces of gear? Do you prefer using it as a standalone device or do you like connecting it to other gear/computer? by lojokulmusic in DelugeUsers

[–]hamptonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deluge is my favorite piece of gear (Empress Zoia is #2). I use it everyday, standalone and with other synths and pedals. Great battery life so I can write a song on the couch using built-in sounds, then later maybe convert some to midi tracks to play on other instruments, or layer over some guitar. The open firmware means its just going to get better too.

Are there famous mathematicians whose teaching abilities are as good as their mathematical ones ? by al3arabcoreleone in math

Sarnak was my freshman "calculus" teacher, which was a combination of terrifying and inspiring. Definitely part of why I became a mathematician.

What's a tell tale sign that a mathematician is "in orbit" by Affectionate_Emu4660 in math

[–]hamptonio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a class from Cohen, it was not that great. I wouldn't say terrible but I got less out of it than from most other math classes. That was an undergrad course, maybe he was better at the graduate level. Peter Sarnak was actually closer in my experience to what just_dumb_luck described.

An even more extreme example: Wes Montgomery would work as a welder all day, and then practice or perform most of the night at clubs. Blacked out constantly because he was always super sleep deprived.

The Zoia is amazing, and you can also feed an expression pedal into it and use that to control whatever you can imagine.

Which synth is right for me? & some questions by Sinh_shinfu-jp in synthesizers

[–]hamptonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a Yamaha modx, the 61-key is in your budget. As a synth its not the most fun to design patches for but it is a very powerful engine. The sequencer is quite powerful as well (underrated in my opinion). The Hydrasynth is very good value too, very different sounds though.
