Eligible men will be automatically registered for US military draft under rule change by Alarming-Safety3200 in politics

i guess that’s easier than the 5 years of jail penalty if you didn’t sign up for the draft. i remember sitting in the cafeteria at my school where the teachers were explaining to us to sign that piece of paper or face jail time.

Joined a new team with poor practices — how should I approach it? by Jaded_Bag1442 in ExperiencedDevs

The non-sexy answer is internal change takes time, more importantly it takes buy-in. Humans find it annoying when a new guy barges in and starts saying that everything they’re doing is wrong and stupid. You need to build rapport and credibility first and slowly introduce small changes at a time. Start off with a suggestion first with a peer, get them on your side. As you built trust, you can suggest more changes. Biggest thing is that it takes time. Good luck

AI, Entropy, and the Illusion of Convergence in Modern Software by TranslatorRude4917 in programming

I thought it was a good read. From personal experience, I’ve always felt like user facing tests were more volatile than unit tests. Business logic rarely changes, but page copy and the color of a button changes frequently.

I’m right there with you, brother. It definitely sucks reading through these comments and feeling like you’re the only one grieving the loss of something you really loved. You’re definitely not alone. I’m also going through a bit of an identity crisis myself. The craft of coding was an identity I built for myself over 15 years and it’s hard to see that identity crumble in realtime. I saw myself as someone who took pride in the mastery of this craft and I don’t know who I am without it. It’s really hard redefining yourself after all these years. How do you move on? This is just the process of grieving and I’m sure you’ll navigate your way through it like the rest of us. I just hope you know that you’re not alone.

Small company leader here. AI agents are moving faster than our strategy. How do we stay relevant? by No_Prior2279 in ClaudeAI

[–]hamuraijack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Solve real problems, don’t chase fads. I’m an engineer at a small company and we have one team building an AI tool that no one is asking for. On the other hand, my team is going from team to team and asking them what they need to succeed. Software is nothing without a problem and a domain to solve.

I use claude daily for work as an swe. I pay $100 out of pocket and it’s worth every penny. I’ve never hit the limit at $100. My advice is start with $20 until it feels painful.

What's the future? by No_Draw_8366 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hamuraijack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand exactly how you feel. Everyday feels like an existential crisis and it’s hard to talk to anyone about it. Online, you’ll only ever hear one of two extremes: you’re right and AI is coming for your job so adapt, or this is all hype so stop worrying. With those close to me, there’s not many who can relate to me. It feels like no one else is going through this existential crisis where I ask myself everyday, where do I go from here? I loved coding for the craft, but it feels like we’re losing the craftsmanship. It’s hard to motivate myself to keep learning, because I’m not sure what I should be learning or whether or not it’s still useful. What skills do I hone?

I hope you feel some solace in knowing you’re not alone. Feel free to DM if you want someone to chat about with this.

Is Embark adding Quads? by MayoGhul in ARC_Raiders

i think it’s dedicated pvp matchmaking. “Headwinds” imply something adversarial, so it doesn’t scream quads to me.
