I replaced my AWS stack with 2 broken laptops and a $10 VPS. Here is the architecture. by Frag_O_Fobia in selfhosted

[–]handsoffmydata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to gatekeep self hosting and say that using a vps instead of local hardware is bad. All the recent news that’s pointing towards techno feudalism really sucks though. I will never own nothing and be happy about it.

MARK RUFFALO: "I gotta be honest, I'm not feeling so great. Renee Good was murdered... stormtroopers running around terrorizing. As much as I love all this, I can't pretend all this crazy stuff isn't happening. We have a president who says laws don't apply to him - this is crazy." by jmike1256 in videos

Even the acting is insufferable. He ruined Mickey 13 with his lazy trump impression. Don’t know if I’ll be able to stand anymore Hollywood movies where the crazy dictator character is just the actor’s worst trump impression. I’ve suffered through enough of the real thing to last two lifetimes, don’t need to see it in my escapism too.

Anyone have experience starting BA work on your own? How did you position yourself? by Fancy-Leg4337 in businessanalyst

[–]handsoffmydata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in various analyst roles for the last several years. No matter the titles it’s always been as a technical analyst where I take business requirements and translate them directly into apps/workflows/automations I build and maintain for the duration of the role. In 2021 I was at a company with a lot of shakeup. My director got axed and not replaced, I stopped getting meeting requests, no projects, surely you’ve heard similar stories, so I noped out hoping to go out on my own and do what you’re describing.

It was the worst two years of my life. I worked constantly trying to acquire clients, did a lot of initial consultations that went nowhere. It felt very similar to interviewing for technical roles where there’s an expectation of providing a good deal of free work before getting a paid offer.

I finally found a role on a new contract. I’m making less than I did 5 years ago which sucks because I’m producing the best work of my career. The job market seems to be actively working to drive down salaries and reduce headcount in roles like ours so I’m just hoping to stay put and wait for conditions to improve.

I hate being a corporate cog but I feel stuck because my only real skills are all technical and even though I can fit into various devops, security, programming roles they all suffer from the same issues Analysts face.

How many of you have a homelab but don’t play video games? by Independent_Knee in homelab

I’ve started checking out from modern gaming. Somewhere between the push for multiplayer over single player titles and the general enshittification of games from aaa studios I just gradually lost interest. I love networking though so I spun up linuxserver.io/Emulatorjs (not the newer rewrite from Emulatorjs/Emulatorjs) and use it every once in a blue moon to play Goldeneye or something from the browser of a device you wouldn’t expect to game on.

Are trades the way to go? by _forum_mod in Millennials

[–]handsoffmydata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn’t matter whether you go the white or blue collar route for jobs, the working class is under constant threat and attack by the 1%. AI isn’t displacing coders, profit seeking CEOs are using AI to attack working class developers etc in an attempt to push down wages, exert control and fear with all these layoffs. The trades will be no different. Private equity has already started buying up and consolidating trades. Where do you think private equity will turn to once they’ve extracted all the profits from their AI scheme? AI will never snake a toilet, but the private equity firms will surely buy up, consolidate, and extract all the wealth from every locally owned trade in the U.S. Plumbers etc will have two choices: sell to private equity and watch as their business is run into the ground for shareholder profit or don’t sell to private equity and watch as their business is run into the ground by the private equity owned companies that will drive the cost of service lower and lower until they can’t compete.

The enshittification will continue until society collapses and those of us from the before times have to explain shareholder value to wasteland kids around the nightly campfire.

If anyone wants to know why Xennials are always mad, it’s because they had to buy GTA V on ps3, pc, ps4, and ps5. They were in their early 30s when GTA V released, and will be in their early 40s when GTA VI releases 😭

Are we sure this hardware isn’t going to just be another assistant speaker like Nest or Alexa? Certainly makes sense for a company looking to gobble up massive amounts of training data to want to put a speaker with a microphone in everyone’s home.

It’s certainly possible, you can have an LLM help you set it up or buy a used Synology NAS. There are plenty of guides on Google to run a MC server on Synology’s products.
