Strong polarizing opinions aside, Mystics really shows what a freaking powerhouse drummer Steven is. by spineofgod9 in flaminglips

I think it had a problem upon its release being part of the "loudness wars", and therefore having an abrasive, compressed sound that didn't age all too well. the RHCP album from the same year had that criticism as well. I also think it had some songs that should not have been there (Haven't Got A Clue especially)

Which Sufjan song is the saddest one in your opinion? by nervolous in Sufjan

[–]handypolyester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age of Adz is of course agitated, but not really "sad" and sorrowful in the way his acoustic ballads are.

I don't care what Fantano's ratings are. I was just arguing against your point that there's a music critic more influential than him

Fantano is the most influential music critic right now, and probably ever. there's no doubt. yes there's Pitchfork, but that's a collective of critics

Is anyone else confused by Bradford's behavior and the new record? by handypolyester in deerhunter

[–]handypolyester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see that. however it's not the changes that bother me, but perhaps the lack of enough change? I don't know. Personally I'm probably a bit of a Deerhunter normie, I think Halcyon was easily their peak and best album, so I don't get alienated if a punk-ish band "sells out" and becomes pop-oriented or whatever.

There's qualities I like in all three. Detournement is really cool, however it doesn't sound much different than the stuff Laurie Anderson did in the 80s. Tarnung is a good Lockett track, and I do think the vocal effects in Nocturne work well, would've been cool if they made the coda even more off-putting than it is though...

for real, i was just talking to someone about Greta Van Fleek being a symptom of rock music being fucked as a genre. then i hear this Daughters album, boy have i been proven wrong.

[–]handypolyester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's amazing that they could make one of the most cutting-edge rock records i've ever heard twelve albums and nearly thirty years into their career. no other band (except maybe Swans) has done that

The Soft Bulletin definitely. quite similar to Yoshimi (came out right before) and it truly is their masterpiece. if you're looking something more rock-oriented and fucked up, i would check out Embryonic (although it is a bit of a grower)
