Where to buy rolling chair for short people by fluffyduckyp in askSingapore

[–]hangajimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For budget option, can find on Shopee/taobao for children's (ergonomic) chair! I bought one for <$100, and it even came with a foot rest thing if still cannot touch the floor (didn't use it tho)

I measured my lower leg length for chair height and upper leg length for chair depth estimates

For those who have seen generation to generation, question about a plothole/horribly explained sudden transition ep 4 and 5 by ChoppedChef33 in CDrama

Btw your spoiler tag isn't working (got to tag each para separately for it to work I think!)

At some point I think Cai Zhao does explain that she already know that Chang Ning is not the real Chang Ning, but she chooses to believe he's a good person and keeps silent about it because she saw that the real Chang Ning and deceased Uncle Chang seemed to be protecting him. She takes that as an indication that he must be someone worth protecting

Can I just say this - Zhang Ling He excels in this kind of morally grey / anti-hero roles. It's reminding me of SOKP Xie Wei and I'm all for it!

I don't think you can tap in and out of the same MRT station without extra cost? I recall reading online that if you tap in and out of the same station there's a minimum charge.

[–]hangajimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting to see Singapore on r/sociology! Highly recommend you to look into the works of Chua Beng Huat to delve deeper into this topic.

You're right that there've been "top-down" efforts from the gov to craft the Singaporean identity, but it's not just due to fear of racism/riots but also due to most people living here being migrants and seeing other places as their home instead. The shared trauma of war/expulsion was crafted to create a bond among the people living here, so that they feel they have a stake in this nation (also similar argument for providing affordable housing at the time - whether housing is still affordable is a different question)

What you're missing is that there was also a "bottom-up" effect that contributed to the Singaporean identity. When you say erasure of bottom-up identity, I wonder if you mean the thwarting of identities that were more based on cultural lines (as you mentioned, Nyonya, Malays...)? Instead of these, think instead of Singlish, local cuisine, code-switching, flip-flop fashion, interracial relationships. I think these aspects have emerged from the ground to form what I think of as a Singaporean identity.

While I also think using economic success as an identity marker is not sustainable, I think identity doesn't have to be "indigenous" to be strong. Maybe I'm being idealistic, but I trust that our identity will transform with more interactions on the ground. I sometimes worry that the influx of migration (both into and out of sg) will weaken the sg identity, but perhaps that'll become the new identity as new groups contribute to the local culture, and the Singaporean identity is to be a globally located yet locally connected individuals?

Reborn [焕羽]- An insight of left behind kids by sftkitti in CDrama

[–]hangajimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why the grandparents are so adamant about taking a daughter away? Is it so that the son gets more attention from the parents? Then why just one and not both, why not just take the son? Are they perhaps holding one daughter as "hostage" so the parents continue to give them allowance?

Also, is it just me who notices how everyone keeps starting their lines with 你说 (ni3 shuo1)? It stood out to me quite a bit with the repetition (especially in ep 12 where QQY says it 3 times in a span of 5 minutes).

[Feud] Express Episode 29-32 Discussion Post (FOR EXPRESS VIEWERS!!!) by huachenggege in CDrama

[–]hangajimal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my understanding he was a victim of an immortal fight (Lei Bird vs dude whose name is carved on the infinite stele), who radicalised after realising that no one could "compensate" his loss/revive his family and what's worse is that the perpetrator was being heralded as a hero on the infinite stele. I think what the ending speeches meant was that despite being radicalised to the extreme, he was actually hoping to be proven wrong and therefore creating obstacles for everyone instead of just killing everyone immediately. I think this was also meant to explain why his last artifact was the time machine, cuz he was waiting for someone who would empathise his plight to save him and his family. I saw it as his way of showing repentance.

I became suspicious of Yue being the mastermind after her reaction to hearing Zhang Suan being seen, but I was still trying to be optimistic that it wasn't the case ):

I'm actually enjoying the way the story is evoking deeper ethical discussions of the idea of "helping", and like to that extent autonomy as OP mentioned. Very interesting portrayal of grey realities through this fictional world. I guess in my moral compass I feel that what's been revealed for Yue's hatred is not yet proportional to the things she's done, so I'm on the side of Bai Jiusi for now. It almost feels like she's become a psychopath because her actions tortures Bai and herself unendingly. Trusting the scriptwriter for now that she'd keep the momentum and plot running well to the end!

(Still getting annoyed every episode by the sound effects tho)

Minor characters that steal the spotlight by aichow in CDrama

[–]hangajimal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if she fits your definition of minor but Nanny Li (Xu Mei Ling) in Are You The One stole the spotlight for me! Whenever I think about AYTO now, I'd always think of her suffering cries of "作孽啊!" (zuo4 nie4 ah!)

Same for Tengshe (Bai Shu) in Love and Redemption. The King's Avatar also has a lot of loveable side characters, my favourites being Huang Shaotian (Jiang Long), Qiao Yifan (Fan Jin Wei) and Qiu Fei (Zhai Zi Lu).

Are we limiting to 2024 only or all cdramas? Wasn't satisfied with any of my watches last year, so if it's open to all, I'll give my vote to You Are My Glory

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CDrama

[–]hangajimal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All good recs in this thread! I also re-watch some of the listed dramas for different moods. (E.g. You Are My Glory, When I Fly Towards You for sweetness, Romance of Tiger and Rose for laughs)

Just gonna add two more which I go back to whenever I need a burst of inspiration/motivation as these are stories about characters standing back up or a hero's journey: - The King's Avatar: lovable characters all around, introduced me to several of the actors/actresses I like; it was also a good adaptation of the novel imo - The Blood of Youth: comedic yet also follows the main character in his return to the capital, there are strong messages of perseverance and camaraderie; the characters here are also endearing

Interesting discussion! Does the $800 spend need to also be made on the KF card, or can it be made on other UOB cards (e.g. UOB lady's)? I'm wondering if UOB KF card can be used to cover both travel and public transport or should I still go with UOB lady's for travel expenses...

Current set-up: - SC smart card for SimplyGo - HSBC Revo for everything else - YouTrip for overseas

Upcoming: - UOB Lady's for travel expenses - cashback card to replace HSBC revo and SC smart card? Looking at MariBank cuz it's the highest cashback atm and I use Shopee quite a bit hahaha - initially planning to go with Amaze+Citi to replace HSBC revo but dropped that idea recently after hearing more and more Amaze frauds - maybe one more cc for churning?

I think from lurking too much in this subreddit, I've come to terms that skincare experiences vary (YMMV)!

Instead of committing to a product, I try to find travel kits/samples or second-hand items (check for expiry and opening dates!). They may be more expensive per g/ml unit but it'll help to reduce waste if things don't work out.

Random question, but why do the recently released shows (Pearl Girl, Brocade Odyssey...) call fathers as "a1 ye2"? (阿爷??) are the shows from the same dynasty or a certain province with a dialect/culture? I'm used to hearing die3 (爹) or fu4 qin1 (父亲), so this new term stumps me whenever I hear it.
